RE: Grand Canyon in early November

If Trailer Village is not available for your visit, there's another FHU campground about 6 miles away in Tusayon. Grand Canyon Camper Village is on the expensive side for what they offer, but it is close to the canyon.
I will second this suggestion. I have stayed here two times when I was unable to get in Trailer Village. Its not bad and is expensive. Its in Tusayan right across the road from the IMAX theater. Its just behind one of the general stores in the area and only about one mile to the gate.
If you were to stay here and drive in and out each day, realize the gate area gets very congested at times. Go in early if you can. If you drive in for the day, you will probably have to park in one of the hugh parking lots surronding the visitor center. From here, you can acess the bus system and go all around the south rim area. Other than these parking lots, there is very little parking anywhere around the south rim area. These parking lots are also a short walk to Mather Point. If you have never been to the canyon, this is a great place to take your first view of the canyon.
Have a great time.

RE: Directv with DNS on One Account. Is it Possible?

The one thing I like about satellite tv, is no one has the same service, I don't care if it is directv or dish. It seems we all have differant plans options and that no one has the same plan options, cause when talking with people we all have differant idea on how our systems work.
CT_WANDERER, that is exactly why I started this question. I wanted to hear from some people who may have tried this or are doing it now and got it to work for them. We all are well aware that you can call either DTV or DISh 12 times and ask a question and get 12 different answers. I don't know what they pay these people or what kind of training they give them, but you sure can get told a lot of different stuff from different reps. A lot of people just keep calling and asking for things until they get a rep that will give them what they want. It can be very frustating.

RE: Directv with DNS on One Account. Is it Possible?

This conversation is beginning to drift off course. Please stick to my original question. If you want to start another thread on a different subject, feel free to do so.
I still would like to hear more from prople that have done this or are doing it now. I am happy with DTV and am fully aware of some of their problems. I am also aware of my other options such as over the air and campground cable.
Please stick to the subject.

RE: Directv with DNS on One Account. Is it Possible?

I agree with everything 2oldman says. That is exactly what we are doing. We have 3 receivers and sometimes take 2 of them with us on the road. We keep our DNS activated all the time, home or RV. Never had a problem. We have a HD DVR in the coach right now and it is watching 101 all the time as we travel down the road. No problem. When we are home, we carry it into the stick. No problem. Do not, I repeat, do not plug in your phone line. It is not necessary, nor is it required.
BTW, on our DVR, there are two satellite inputs. If you have only one input, randomly the screen will go blank, and then a floating DTV logo will appear. To eliminate this problem, use a splitter to provide two inputs to the DVR.
Larry, thanks for the answer. That answers my main question. I have a couple more questions for you if you don't mind. Are you getting both East and West coast DNS channels? What does it cost? Are you getting your local home channels when at home?
Like you, my DVR has two inputs. When at home, I have two inputs coming in from the Slimline 3 dish. On the road, the 18" dual LNB dish which also has two lines. I have added two input plugs on the side of my RV for the two lines to pass through the side. The only other difference is at home I have to have 2 B-Band Convertors just ahead of the DVR's. As I understand it, these are required for the HD signal which comes from the 99 or 103 satellite. They are not needed in the RV which only gets SD from the 101 satellite.

RE: Grand Canyon in early November

DW and I stayed a week last summer in Trailer Village. I would highly recommend it as the best place to be. The bus system comes right to the campground and you can get around from there much easier than the alternatives. When I was there last summer, we saw elk in and around the campground every day.

RE: Directv with DNS on One Account. Is it Possible?

2oldman, that is my question. Can I make this work with just an RV account and no home account. That account would have both of my DVR's. DTV would not know if they were in my RV or home.

Directv with DNS on One Account. Is it Possible?

I have had my 5th wheel and Direct TV for 6 years. We have a stick house. Back in 2007 and 2008, I was able to get DNS added for 4 months at a time. DW and I worked in Yellowstone and we had a DVR. We recorded everything we wanted to watch from the east coast and watched when the time fit our schedule. As best as I can remember, we paid about $14 extra on our bill per month for both East and West DNS. DW loved it.
Now, I am told that I have to have two accounts and that each account must be activated or deactivated a month at a time. Also, each account must be activated at least 6 months of a year. DW and I have gotten to where we are rarely gone for over a month at a time.
Here is my question. Does anyone out there have such a circumstance and go with just an RV account year round and use their DVR’s at home when not on the road? Are you able to turn DNS off and on as you need it? Are you able to keep your local stations on all the time so that anytime you are at home you can watch your local stations?
There is one other thing different since I had DNS. We now have HD at home on a Slimeline 3 dish. In my RV, I still use an 18” dual LNB round dish which will only see the 101 satellite and only get SD. That’s OK as long as the HD keeps working at home. I would like for my locals to keep on working all of the time. There have been times that DW has flown home for some reason. The home TV needs to keep on working in case she were to come home for a time.
Anybody tried a setup like this and made it work recently?

Test Test Test

I have been trying to post a new topic for two days and keep get 'Connection Problem' everytime. Weird! This is just a test to see if anything can be posted.
I see that this message got posted OK. Does anyone have any idea why I cannot post my message? It is not real long and has nothing unusual in it.

RE: Avoiding Yellowstone Crowds

Warning around animal jams, especially a grizzley close to the road. DW and I worked the summers of 2007 and 2008 in Yellowstone. During those two summers, I saw one lady run over by a toad behind a class A. She was so intent on watching the grizzley that she backed up behind the class A inbetween the motor home and the toad. She didn't notice it when the class A started pulling out. The driver of the class A, if he looked in his mirrors, probable never saw her since she was behind the motor home. This was a serious accident that could have been avoided.
On another occasion with a grizzley just off the right side of the road, I came very close to hiting a man. I was going very slow, probably less than 5 mph, when he ran across just barely in front of my bumper. I never saw him until he was directly in front of me.
Don't stop watching the people and cars around you.

RE: *~Posting suggestions from the Moderator~*

I see at the start where you suggest people do a search. That is a very good idea. Equally good, would be to do a search on RVPARKSREVIEW.com. Normally, I find my best information on this site. I can search by state, city, and nearby locations. I would recommend to everyone to look at this site before posting a message asking for information.

RE: Orange Beach Or Destin

Nathan, you didn't say when you were going. Gulf Shores state park in Gulf Shores and Top Sail in Destin would be my two top choices. Depending on when you are going, either one can be tough to get into. I have a week reserved in Top Sail for April that I made in this past September. When I made the reservation, there were just a few sites available to pick from.

RE: Greasable bolts and thicker spring shakles ???

Do a search on 'wet bolt'. There are several threads. I had one this past fall while installing a wet bolt kit from Dexter. My problem was getting grease into several of the bolts after they were installed.

RE: Lug Nuts Pop when Tightening

I did take my old dial torque wrench and compare it to the newer clicker. On 4 lug nuts, I back off each nut just enough to be sure it would turn with 100 lbs tightening applied to it. Next, I tightened all with the old dial wrench to 100 lbs. I then set the clicker to 100 lbs to see if any further tightening would occur. None did. I then reset the clicker to 110 lbs and tried the tightening again. They all tightened a bit like I think they should have when going from 100 lbs to 110. I feel satisfied that both wrenches are fairly accurate.
I have bought some anti seize that I plan to put on the threads only and back the torque down some the next time I have to remove any wheels.
Thanks everyone for your advice.

RE: Lug Nuts Pop when Tightening

Markrving,
Thanks for the suggestion. Your suggestion reminded me that I still had an older dial torque wrench that I had quit using because it only went to 100 lbs. I think I can set up a test so that I can compare the newer click wrench against this older one.

RE: Lug Nuts Pop when Tightening

My click sound torque wrench was 40% out. Set at 110 it was actually closer to 160. Might be an idea to check yours out. Also make a small vertical line on the end of the stud and see if it is still vertical after you hear the noise.
I would like to know if the torque is off. How could I check that?
Do your lug nuts have those decorative housings over them? Could be that they are popping as they seat into the depression around the holes on the rim. I've got a couple that are split where they go down into the rim and make some noise.
They do not have a decorative housing over them, just plastic cover over each nut. There is a center black plastic cover over the rim center hole. That does have a metal ring that fits on the inside of the rim.
A small amount of lube is a must & will not hurt a thing, anti seize is better imho. If you were to have a spinning stud there are studs with different spline dimensions so not absolute you need to replace the hub! The popping you are hearing is the nut protesting to being moved without some lubrication,I have heard it often & it reminds me to lube them !!JMHO jb
John, this is what it feels like and what I have thought was probably happenning, I just couldn't be sure. I think I will try some anti seize when I get a chance. Thanks.

RE: Lug Nuts Pop when Tightening

Ah, I see what you meant now. They are splined and press fit. But I assure you that is not what the OP is experienceing. I've never seen a press fit spline rotate, but if they did, you would be replacing the entire hub because it would be destroyed and never hold a stud again.
Thanks for the discussion and help. In reading the above, this brings up one question that I'm still unsure about. Are the studs turning? Or, is the nut, where it contacts the rim, slipping suddenly causing a pop or a crack sound? I have always assumed that the latter was the case. My reason is this. It never happens more than once per lug nut. If the stud was turning, I think that this might cause more than one pop on at least one or more of the nuts.

Lug Nuts Pop when Tightening

I'm not sure if this is a problem or not. My 5er has around 25,000 miles on it. It still has the original wheels and lug nuts. In the last year or so, when I am tightening the nuts, they will pop and the nut will turn some. Not all of them do this. Some will torque down real smooth. Is this a problem with the nuts or the wheels? Has anyone else had this to happen? If so, what did you do to fix?
I also tightening the nuts in 3 stages like the book says to. First time 30 lbs, next 60lbs. and last 110. The popping only occurs on the last torque of 110. I have never noticed any loosening problem. And, I do use a regular clicking torque wrench. Any suggestions? Thanks.

RE: 35mm slide converter recommendation

Take a look at en EPSON V300 on Amazon. I got one about 3 weeks ago and have scanned around 2000 photos. I love it. It will also do negatives and slides. It cost me just under $80, shipping and all.
