RE: Direct TV Connections for Motor Home?

Between myself and my wife we made it work today. Took a couple hours but suddenly there was a perfect picture. Had two problems to work out. The first dish had a bad LNB but when I replaced the LNB I still couldn't make it work until the wife asked if being to close to the carport with a metal roof might be affecting the compass. I moved over ten feet and suddenly north was 20 degrees further east. But it works now thanks to the help I received from you guys. And 2OLDMAN I'll be passing by Mose's Lake in a few days. I'll blow my horn when I do. Thanks much.

Direct TV Connections for Motor Home?

Well I finally dumped cable tv and went to sattelite. Now I need to learn how to make it work in the RV. So far I know that you must use a receiver that is made to be used on a analog TV. My old TV in the basement is analog and the receiver I will use is for it. I have been told that a single LNG dish is adaquit for analog TV's. I have the dish, tri-pod and the RG6 cable. And thats as far as I have gotten. What else do I need and if someone can give me directions on how to proceed that would help. I know that some of you think making it work is very simple , but it's only simple if you know how. You see I am simple and it's nothing like me at all.

RE: How do you clean holding tank sensors

After I have made my last dump before heading home I give the gray and black tanks a quick flush and than I add dish soap to each and all the hot water I have available. Driving home wash's the sensers and when I get home I just dump the soapy water out on the ground. Of coarse I have a few acre's to do it on, but else ways you could find a dump site close to home.

RE: Is water pump blowing my fuse?

Remove the pump head from the motor, and run the motor by it's self. If it still blows a fuse you know it is the motor if it seems to run ok than disassemble the pump head "carefully" and clean it up inside carefully than reassemble and try it. Most people today are to quick to just throw things like that away and buy a new one. If you take the time to find out why it is blowing the fuse you will learn about that pump and the next time it fails you will have a little more knowledge about an important part of your rig. Besides if you do fix it you will have more money to spend on something else. Like beer!

RE: Questions about timing chain on 454 chev.

OK. Never seen a timing chain that looked like that double row chain. Is there any way to determine which chain is on which engine? That is without removing the timing chain cover. My engine is the 1995 GMC 454 in a 1996 28' Itasca that has a dry weight of 14,300 pounds. I am assuming from the looks of the gears in the picture of the double row chain that they are steel. They certainly would not put aluminum or nylon gears in conjunction with a chain that husky. At least I hope they are hardened steel.

RE: Questions about timing chain on 454 chev.

Ok, now i've heard of extra main bearings on the heavy duty 454's, but I've have never heard of double row roller timing chains. Can you explain how that works? Can anybody explain how that works? I'm not trying to be a smart ass I just can't wrap my mind around the idea.

Questions about timing chain on 454 chev.

My Mh has the 454 chev. engine and it has 124,000 miles on it. The block was built in 1995. Right now it runs just as good as new, with no abnormal noise's. Starts most times before you hear the starter turn over and the timing is right on. But I'm hearing these stories about timing chains failing around 125,000 miles. I have taken it to several legitimate shops and they say that the timing chain on large block chevrolet engines will outlast the engine. And the engine if taken care of should last easily 200,000 miles. I have had 454 engines exceed 200,000 miles. But what has happened in the past is not necessarily what is the norm. Tell me what you think and maybe your experience with chev. 454's.

RE: Biggest 12V charger from 950 Genny?

Every gen set and every charger have individual quirks. Just because the builder says your gen set should put out 950 watts does not mean it will and the same goes for the charger. In my case I can run a Heart inverter charger at 65 amps load from my 1000 watt Honda at near sea level. At 5000 feet it can't make it.

RE: Toilet 'burping'

Remember that burp is methane gas. Very, very explosive. The best way to unplug the vent is with a garden hose stuck down from the roof end. The ice cube will only tell you if it is plugged. The garden hose will unplug it. Best to drop your tank first so you can tell if any water comes out of the sewer hose.

RE: Surge Protector and Rain

I take it you mean the campground receptacle and the trailer plug in. If you have the pig tail type like I have, I cut a length of inner tube from a bicycle tube about 18" long and put the surge protector inside it to protect it from the rain.

RE: Salvage Titles for Motorhomes

While I appreciate the info that is being offered, no one has touched on the question I have. I'm not good with words so I will spell it out and hope I don't hurt someones feelings. Are stolen Motor Homes issued salvage titles if they are not damaged beyond there prestolen condition? I know about the Banks and insurance companies. I just need to know if this guy is lying to me about why it has a salvage title. Carfacs says the only info they have on the MH is that it was sold at an insurance aucthon. I already knew that. Thats where the present owner bought it.

Salvage Titles for Motorhomes

I recently looked at a class A motorhome being sold by a private individual. It had a salvage title. He says the salvage title came from it being stolen and than reposessed. To my limited knowledge of salvage titles they are put out to protect the person buying the vehicle from getting stuck with a wrecked and than rebuilt vehicle. He swears the MH has not been wrecked and if a MH has been stolen it must be listed as a salvage vehicle. I looked it over real well and could not find any repaired damage. So to be safe I had it inspected by a body and frame mechanic and he said the only thing he could find was the clear coat was coming off of the lower outside shell. I thought maybe someone here would have knowledge of salvage titles. The MH was stolen in Oklahoma and reposessed in Illinois. Than returned to Oklahoma and sold by the insurance company under a salvage title. The insurance company had already paid off the original owner.

RE: Pro's and con's on GM 6.5 Turbo Diesel?

Since this is a RV forum I rather hoped I would find people who had this engine in a motor home instead of a pick up or hummer. Your pick ups and hummers are going to have a more high speed rear end than a motor home. There for they will have less power, but get better MPG. MH's use a 4.10 to 1 reduction while pick ups use something in the area of 3.3 to 1 reduction. In other words it's Apples and Oranges. You can't compare the two. But thanks for the comeback.

Pro's and con's on GM 6.5 Turbo Diesel?

Please understand, I am interested in the 6.5 not the 6.2 or the 6.6. Some people seem to think they are the same engine. They are definately not. This particular engine is the 6.5 Turbo and the rear end is a 4.10 with the 6 speed Allison transmission. It is pushing a 20,000 pound motorhome. It is stock. What I would like to know is, it's rated HP, and what can be done to improve it's power and also what kind of fuel mileage I can expect from it? Any info you have from personal experience will be appreciated.

RE: Non-cable television

Yes you should get the Set Top Box. It is the box that allows your analog tv to receive digital signals. I would recomend the pass through model. My own is not, though I wish it were. Also I would recomend the clip on antenna. It is called the Wingman and is sold by many different types of outlets including on line. It is made by Wine Gard. I live 40 miles South East of Seattle in the foothills of the Cascade Range and before digital I was able to receive 8 analog stations and only 6 of them were clear and viewable. With the Set Top Box alone I was able to receive 16 digital channels. Most very good. With the set Top Box and the Wingman I now receive 21 clear strong channels. If you do buy the Wingman and install it be sure to notice where it will lie when you put it down. I had to clip 1 inch off of one of the wings so it would miss my forward vent. Didn't seem to bother it.

RE: Looking For Info On 1994 Safari Sahara 34'

Well I guess I should have waited around for a couple days longer to hear from more people. Although I see that only about half put out any info. But it matters not because I will not be buying that particular coach anyway. It was a 600 mile round trip to look at it and so I asked for more pictures. When they showed up what I seen was a joke. This is the most barren coach I have ever seen. Not even a curtain on any of the windows and a short queen bed that is actually nothing more than a overwidth full size. A queen is 60W.by 80L A full size is 54W by 75L this bed was 60W by 75L. I'm longer than that. Plus the couch did not make up into any bed. Just a plain coach. No oven just a plain three burner hot plate with a plain microwave. Try baking a pie or a turkey in a microwave. No carpet on the floors just inlaid tile and wood. It had 142,671 miles and when I commented on that his response was "Diesels are good for nearly a million miles." Yeah thats true, but the rest of the coach is not a diesel. When the guy bought it he went the cheapest posible way but now that he wants to unload it he is asking $10,000 over book. I thank you all for your info but I believe I'll pass on the Safari Sahara. At least this time.

Well, thank you, gentlemen. Only two responses but both quite helpfull. There must not have been many of them sold in that year or model.

Looking For Info On 1994 Safari Sahara 34'

Looking into buying one from a private party and needing the help of other owners. This rig has a 250 hp diesel Cummins and Allison transmission, don't know what speed. If anyone has personal experience with this kind of rig, maybe you could tell me about any good points like fuel economy or bad points like rubber roofs that leak. Or maybe just what kind of roofs they have. I find it is best to ask those who know before buying and than regreting it later. So anything you may want to share no matter how small will be appreciated.

RE: Television Translators

byronlj, So far I have learned that Mohave County sublet the Translator work to a company called Wecon. They are located at Kingman and have a 800 number. It is 1-800-290-5872. I called today monday and talked to their field operator. He said I should get a perfect signal and receive over 8 channels. I told him that I had talked to 25 other people in this park and none of them receive any better signal than I do. We set up a meeting for tuesday to have him bring his equipment and find out whats going on. He says we may be in a blind spot. In which case they would have to install a reflecter which would pick up their signal and transfer it to this park. It seems they have other blind spots which they have had to correct in this manner. Hope this helps.
