RE: Yellowstone Crowds

We were there 2nd / 3rd week in Sept last year and beautiful weather. But, as said, you never know. It can snow nearly any month in the mountains. I would go the same time as we did last year anytime - crowds are down and it was gorgeous. Both there and Grand Teton.

RE: us 50

Hwy 50 is a good road; done it many times. Only Monarch Pass to contend with but not a bad one relative to many in CO.

RE: Yellowstone in September

Well, everyone is recommending Grizzly in West Yellowstone. Guess what? So do I! We spent a week with them second week in Sept last year and it was great. Y S was crowded but we got out early in the day and that really helps a lot. As a side note, the buffalo are now officially bison and the antelope are officially pronghorn. In that everything seems to be getting rewritten these days pretty soon you will sing, "Oh give me a home, where the bison roam - and the deer and the pronghorn play ..............." Sorry, could not pass that up.

RE: Yellowstone or Grand Canyon

You did not have a bad choice! There truly is so much more to do and see at Yellowstone for sure. We spent a week there and drove every road - so much diversity as it is so large. Unless you are really into hiking or photo work a couple of full days at the South Rim is sufficient to cover it one end to the other. (We do both) God bless, be safe and enjoy!

RE: Yellowstone or Grand Canyon

Tough call. We have been to the Grand Canyon several times due to our reasonable proximity. We were back to Yellowstone / Grand Teton for about 2 weeks last early / mid Sept. Both are spectacular so it depends on your timeframe and desires. You can spend a lot of time at YS / GT but about 4 full days on the South Rim - unless you are into SERIOUS hiking - gives you all the beautiful sunrise and sunsets you can imagine. Midday the colors are washed out by the sun and there are no shadows in The Big Ditch. The North Rim has no hookups and very limited view of the Grand Canyon - and all your pix are right into the sun. paulj has a very good point about so many other wonderful places to see in the area as well. Love them all.

RE: Traveling thru Colorado

Several years before we started the RVing we rented a Class C....we lived in Minneapolis and did not know how much altitude affected gas engines (a lot). No toad. We came west from Denver to the first big hill (maybe Mt. Vernon) and pulled over before we got to Chief Hosa or whatever it is. I thought I had a brake lock up as we had come to a crawl! In spite of the hills on I-70, I think west from Denver on it is as beautiful as an interstate can get out to Grand Junction. And we have been in 44 states and driven lots of interstate. You will be going slow up and just remember to also go slow (lower gear) down.

RE: Traveling thru Colorado

Just a small correction here. There are indeed two passes. One is Vail Pass and the other is up thru Eisenhower Tunnel. Those who cannot (hazmat mainly) go thru the tunnel must take Hwy 6 which is Loveland Pass ....... most people do Loveland for sightseeing / hiking or out of necessity. You might need to unhook the Jeep.

RE: Arizona Trip

What parts of the state are you going to? Lots down here - of all kinds - in the Tucson area. And Sedona. What are you interested in?

RE: Rancho Sedona RV Park pics

We stayed there back when we had a small towable. Have scouted it out a few times since and come to the same conclusion - I would not even try it with the 5th wheel. The roads and many of the spaces are very, very tight. If you get one of the premium sites at $60+ you will have some room but not in the $40 sites. We, and many others, stay at Distant Drums in Camp Verde and drive to hike and photo work in Sedona. It is, to be sure, a beautiful park though. But only one in Sedona and they can have the "only show in town attitude" at times.

RE: Colorado Mountain Passes

Once again I suggest a Search here on the Forum for MDH. You will get information overload and you can make up your own mind based on your comfort level. Most will not recommend it except in a toad / TV due to severe dropoffs, hills, little shoulder, no guard rail, switchbacks, etc. And those that take their half out of the middle, including trucks and RV's. Truth be told you will have to go over a pass no matter what route you take from CO Springs to Durango. If you take the suggested route around MDH (Red Mtn 11018' and Molas Divide 10,910') you go over Lizard Head 10,222'. If you go either 25, 50, 285, 160 or 25, 160 you will have Wolf Creek Pass 10,850' and it is a long grind up and down. Additionally, if you do 25, 160 you have La Veta Pass at 9413'. In any case, the toad will most likely have to come off. You won't be the first nor the last that has had to do that. Part of negotiating CO with a gasser. I have heard you lose 4% power for every 1000' elevation gain - having had a gasser truck with a 5th wheel I can believe it. Be safe.

RE: Moab, UT

Correct. The OLD owners had an attitude problem; not the new ones. I have talked to the new ones and would go there for sure if we could not get into Moab Valley. In my mind, only downside is the south of town location. In the past on this Forum others have also reflected the attitude problem with the previous owners. Mine went beyond that to a quite serious ethics issue. But they are gone so we move forward.

RE: Jackson Hole, WY Stuff to Do

ONE night at Grand Teton? Lots of commercial stuff at Jackson Hole - huge tourist trap - but nothing like the beauty of the N P. IMHO.

RE: Moab, UT

We stayed at Spanish Trail twice (before the new ownership), stayed at Portal a year or so ago (in the expensive section that had knee high weeds and smelled of the animals from the neighboring fields and the older section - which you had to drive thru to get to the big bucks section - was very run down), and Moab Valley three times (they were full for even a well in advance reservation request our last visit). For FHU's would recommend Moab Valley for sure or Spanish Trail.

RE: Newbies headed to Yellowstone

We were at Yellowstone and Grand Teton this last 2nd - 3rd weeks in Sept last year. Great time to be there! Crowds are down - although still busy. Cannot even comprehend what it must be like in the summer! Absolutely spectacular!

RE: Moab, UT

Spanish Trail got new ownership a year or two ago and I have heard that have really improved the place. We stayed there in the past but could not take the owners' attitude - and were not alone. It has wonderful views. Only downside is that it is south of town a ways and Arches and Canyonlands Island In The Sky is north of town - so you have the drive thru town each time each way. We stay at Moab Valley.

RE: Newbies headed to Yellowstone

Summer in Yellowstone. I would definitely make a reservation! We were at YS for a week last fall; stayed at Grizzly in West Yellowstone and would recommend it. We drove EVERY road. Other than one small section - which they tell you about - you should not have any trouble driving it with your rig. Finding parking in some of the lots may be a challenge. Head out early in the morning.

RE: Yellowstone Park Visit

And we went to Colter Bay (which is Grand Teton NP) and should definitely be a separate spot.

RE: Yellowstone Park Visit

Yellowstone is huge - bigger than the state of Rhode Island. We stayed in West Yellowstone for a week and based out of there - drove every road. Start out early in the morning and plan that you will spend pretty much a full day, each day.
