RE: Tis the season! Rattlesnake bites and Dogs...

We have done both the snake avoidance training and the vaccine as Dr. Doug states. I was hesitant to vaccinate my dogs too because of everything I read about the side effects, but after killing 4 Diamondbacks around our home last summer, we decided the extra time that the vaccine bought for us should one of them get bit was worth the risk of the side effects. Like ljr, the only thing we noticed was a small bump at the injection site that went away after a while. My boys and girl have all gone back for the vaccine again this year as I would rather be safe than sorry.
The snake avoidence training was interesting and I'm not sure if it will make a difference should my pack come up on a rattler. I think you have to take them back for the refreshers if that is the route you choose to go and it was actually quite expensive as we paid $80 per dog. The good thing was that the refreshers were included in that price, but we had to drive over an hour to get back to the training location, so it didn't happen even though we had good intentions.
