RE: MFGR Battery charging specs

Best I could do. You'll have to scroll down to about the 2nd page or so...

RE: Using battery charger with shore power/ converter on

Are you sure they cost 5 bucks, seems I got mine for a tad less with a co0upon.
Or free. April/May coupon from "Highways" gets you one free if you spend 10 bucks.
Coupon code: 80655068
Otherwise the "retail" price is $9.99.
Got one of the backlit ones too. Not really worth the extra few bucks, IMO.
Had one a' those Vector lighter-plug meters myself. Worked OK, but I also found it to be less than perfectly accurate. With no load, that reading should be very similar as right at the battery.

RE: MFGR Battery charging specs

Just because I don't care, doesn't mean I don't understand. :)
I have a new found respect for you... Mr. Simpson.
;)
One of my all time favorite lines.
FYI: Lifeline recommends a "Conditioning" voltage of 15.48 at 77F.

RE: Single cup coffee maker amp draw

Our coffee maker. I fill 2 mugs to the rim with water... pour them into a pan... heat the water to about 200F... grind the right amount of beans... pour them into the press... pour the hot water over... stir and put the lid on... wait 3 minutes and then plunge and pour... slowly and carefully... and don't pour the last ounce or so.
Tiny amount of propane and zero battery. The French Press is widely considered as unsurpassed in brewing good coffee.
I have the Coleman unit also. It was a gift. It is a very fine drip coffeemaker, but it's a bit bulky for our little rig with no basement.
All I ask is that you please don't destroy decent coffee with a percolator.

RE: New battery with old converter?

I'm pretty sure you're mistaken about that charge rate. Don't expect fast charging miracles with it, but yes... definitely add the 2 extra batteries.
I have 3 12ers and a lesser converter. No problem. Has been floating them properly at 13.5V for years.
If you need a quick recharge... then we'll need to talk further.

RE: Using battery charger with shore power/ converter on

Every RVer should have a digital multi-meter in the rig's toolbox. The 5 buckers from Harbor Freight are perfectly acceptable for this application. Get several... in case you accidentally try and check more current than you should.

RE: Emergency Road Service

I think you need to go back and do some searches on the forum. You will find this has been covered and most stated CoachNet is the best.
Agreed. I researched this extensively and changed to CoachNet. I honestly don't recall all the reasons why, but that's what I did.
I know I needed a company that would cover the toad... which... for me is a boat. Perhaps GS does that too, I don't remember.
Covers all vehicles in my family and anything else we drive.
This last Christmas, I locked the keys in my FIL's P/U down in Santa Cruz. No big. He has plenty of vehicles.
We waited until the 26th to call. The gal on the phone was very friendly and helpful. The serviceman was there in a half hour. Done.
Not sure if you get hotel discounts with CoachNet, though. And I don't recall them offering free maps.

RE: Sam's Club GC2

...I would probably keep the same company battery in the same 6V series connection sets... i.e two Energizer 6V in series in one group to make 12VDC and then two Duracells 6V in series for the second group to make 12VDC.... Then parallel the two 12VDC groups..
Good point, Roy. Yes, definitely do this.

RE: Battery Capacity Data Link

My fingers are finished again for a few days. Ouch!
That sucks, old man. I'm sorry.
Mas tequila! Every Mexican I've ever known says it cures all. And I've gone through great lengths to test their theories on my own. Results are, as of yet... inconclusive. I'm afraid more testing is in order.
Yeah, I've read that page before. Your seal of approval is much appreciated.

RE: Sam's Club GC2

They very well may not be the same battery, but if your current set are only 6 months old or so with only a few cycles, then I think you will suffer only minor loss of life, if any.
I would do it and never look back.

RE: Charging battery with generator/stand-alone charger

It absolutely might not be the case.
And yes. It is not expected to go into boost (bulk/14.4V) mode if the batteries are full. No converter or smart charger should unless manually forced to.

.
Thank you for giving me another opportunity to post one of BFL's shots of his bevy of portable chargers. This system works very well. Nary a converter can match the charging algorithm of the Vector/Black & Decker chargers...

Not taking into account all the future labor and memory required to garner this benefit from your manual solar tracker, of course.

So Mex if I may offer a brief summation... I believe the gist of what you were getting at was along the lines of...
CAPACITY IS KING!!!
Yep. It's been awhile. Felt good.

RE: Two 6 volt GC Batteries, OR, two type 24 batteries?

If you want to maximize capacity... and because of space limitations it would take an odd number of batteries to do that... or if you don't have the height... go 12s.
If you plan to do successive 50-90% charges, GCs are much easier to restore back to 100%... though most converters will only get their batteries to more like 97%... but that's for another thread.
I never do successive 50-90% chargers or the like. I only use the genny for A/C. With LED lighting, a few hours of TV a day and lots of boombox time, my bank can get us through a week with no generator. And this working stiff NEVER gets more time off than that. We're mostly weekend warriors.
I prefer GCs, but don't have the height... AND I can fit 3, but not 4. I have 3-G27s and I wouldn't change a thing.
*EDIT*
OK. Knowing what I know now... I WOULD change ONE thing...
Since I purchase my Costco Group 27s, Walmart restored their warranties and their Group 29 is virtually the same size as their and Costco's Group 27s. If I have my rig long enough to burn up my 27s, I would replace them with three Wally 29s.
Now carry on...

RE: Portable Panel Tilting and Tracking on the Roof-Solved

KendallP
Ha!

:)
Thanks for pickin' up the slack for me, mene-dog. Guess I had a little too much Cinco de Mayo last night to open the laptop.
Since my rig is a small MH... and we usually pull a boat as our toad, the MH becomes our run-around-town rig. This would not be practical for me. And yes... since solar has recently become so affordable, aiming for RV systems is no longer as attractive an idea as it once was. And since I'm a small business owner who's already buried, I could make a lot more money than the cost of an extra panel in the time it would take me to build one of these. And an extra panel gets me 100% more power vs. 30.
BUT...
B is retired. And a bad day tinkering in the garage is better than a good day at work. It's cool that he does this kind of stuff in the same of SCIENCE!!!
Good work, B! We look forward to your reports.

RE: My LEDs

Received the $5 one from 2011_LED today ( not bad, 8 days shipped from China ). At 1st, they all worked, then after about 10 mins, 3 of the LED's stopped working. Then 3 more LED's started blinking, then stopped working:
Before the 6 stopped working, they look pretty good ( left one is LED, right is reg bulb )
Well that stinks.
Sorry they didn't work out for ya'. Is it safe to ASSume that the voltage was below 15?
