RE: Cougar vs Laredo?

We see a lot of Laredos around us that are starting to delam in the rear side walls. One of them is only 3 years old. When we were looking at buying, we looked at alot of Cougars that were 5 to 7 years old and holding up nicely. Of course owner maintence has alot to do with that.
How does maintenance affect delam?

RE: National Forrest Roads & a Minivan

*****I love having a four wheel drive on difficult forest roads, but a very wise ranger once told me "the term 'four wheel drive' just means 'you will get stuck a hundred yards further in than you would've been.'"
...
I often creep along rocky dirt roads that I think are difficult, only to see someone in an ordinary passenger vehicle pass me easily. They seem to do just fine.*****
LOL. We were out at Canyonlands NP last year on one of the roads marked "high clearance vehicles only" debating if it was wise to proceed with our Jeep Grand Cherokee. We passed a roll back tow truck bringing out a Chrysler that didn't make it ;-)
*****My suggestion is to pick one of the developed but 'rustic' USFS campgrounds for starters and use that as a base to check out the FS roads and dispersed camping options in that area.
*****
VERY good advice.
We have made some exploratory trips leaving the trailer at home and making notes for good campsites.

RE: National Forrest Roads & a Minivan

Most NF roads will be okay. OTOH, I've seen a few that need a 4wd truck.
You can check with the local FS office, they can tell you about the roads. Also in some NFs, the road designations indicate the quality (e.g. two digit numbers are high quality, 4 digit numbers are high clearance only) although that varies from one forest to another.

I like your stabilizers to the tow hooks. Good idea.

RE: Bad Day at Longmont,Colorado

The opposite of being charged book rate by a mechanic is to pay by the actual time he spends on the job. You know, including coffee breaks, restroom breaks, talking with his friends.... Doing a job slowly makes more money for him and the dealership...

RE: Superbumper

But in some states there are laws against leaving hitches, cargo carriers, etc. in the receivers, while not towing. It seems that people walk into them in parking lots, and such.
Good point. My long bed, crew cab is big enough and hard enough to find a parking spot in the first place!

RE: Superbumper

If you are rear ended and it takes a significant impact, I would worry about hidden damage to the hitch. Maybe weakening the bolts or or the welds.
If someone is going to rear end me, perhaps it would be better for the regular bumper to take the hit, that's what it's supposed to do.

RE: Superbumper

Everyone likes stats :)
You have a 1 in 4 chance of being in an accident in your lifetime.
30% of accidents are rear enders = you have a 1 in 12 chance of being in a rear ender in your lifetime
20% of rear end crashes results in reported whiplash = 1 in 60 chance of reporting whiplash injury in your lifetime
Multiple that out by the percentage you drive your truck vs your car and the percentage you drive your truck without the trailer and you have the total average chance the Superbumper MIGHT help.
Stats from NTSHA
Gosh, when I was young, I was rear ended several times. I learned not to put up with tailgaters. I must be taking care of a big bunch of the population, statistically speaking ;-)
Only 1 in 4 people EVER have an accident in their lifetimes? That's hard to believe.

RE: awsome time laspe of Arizona & Utah

Unfortunately I couldn’t watch it with my wonderful verzion wireless service even with the HD turned off…
But I believe it is WOW…
I got it with my Pantek uml290. Out in the woods of west central Wisconsin. Took a while to load but only was 300Mb of data.
300 MB, ouch! I'm glad I did it on my iPad with the unlimited download instead of my desktop with the 200mb daily limit.

RE: Cinder Blocks..

We carry an assortment of solid marble blocks for leveling...
http://www.unimexna.com.vn/Images/Upload/Products/Marble%20Blocks(3).jpg height=250Those are nice and they add a touch of class to the campsite. :)
But polished granite or marble would look so much more classy.....
Just sayin' ;)

RE: 5th wheel vs tow trailer

This is a common 'urban legend' that was true for many years. That is, until some of the high end hitches came along for TTs, that make them tow essentially the same or better than a 5th wheel. ...
The poster that mentioned his observations that 5ers were less affected by wind: I will bet 20 cases of beer, that NONE of the TTs he observed were using one of the high end hitches I mentioned.
You can't call it "an urban legend" and then go on to say that you bet what people are seeing are not premium hitches.:(
It's possible that there are better hitch designs although I still think that anything on the bumper is going to affect stability more than something sitting above the rear axle.

RE: 5th wheel vs tow trailer

We had an entry level TT. (Over the years we have had a couple of TTs.) Went to a very nice 40' motorhome. Recently traded for a 5'er. VERY happy with the 5'er. More room than the MH. Easier towing than the TT and, of course, lots more room and storage and tank capacity.
Hookup is a snap. Towing is easy.
Of course, you do need more of a truck with a 5'er, they are heavier.

RE: Good Sam (poor business practices)

knuts1,
Your posts show you are a Good Sam member That is another GS scam, showing folks as members, when they're not. As long as your email of record here on the forum and the email GS has on file for you, it will put the GS logo on your post. I asked that it be removed from my post and you would have thought I asked for the unpardonable, but it did get removed, after awhile.
Ouch! I definitely will not consider GS in the future! Bad, bad, bad!

RE: It finally happened at the dump station...

You should have called 911 and reported an illegal toxic waste dump and supplied plate number and a description of the vehicle.
Oh geesh! I'm glad that everyone on the board here is perfect and has never made a mistake or done something stupid.
Talk about "making a Federal case" out if it :(

RE: Accident ends trip to Disney World

Sounds to me like the other guy's insurance owes you a rental motorhome!
I agree! Or compensation for your MH not being available.
Having waited two months for our leveling jacks to be repaired (mostly waiting on parts), I can see where this would take 4 months.
Make sure the fridge is empty and opened and that the unit is winterized while it's down there.

As a seasonal camper I keep my slides in when not in use. I have yet to see a good reason not to bring em in.
It pretty much signals that no one is there.

RE: Need advice planning Utah NP trip

TonyOCKy: Angel's Landing hike in Zion is ranked one of the top hikes in U.S. probably about 6 miles but strenuous.
Just be forwarned: the park says the trail has "guardrails and cables" along the narrow sections. Yeah, right! They are 6" off the ground and on the UPhill side!
The hike is kind of humorous. The first part is paved blacktop and is very easy (other than steep uphill). The second part is rock scrambling!
Even if you only do the first part, it is worthwhile and the view is spectacular!
