RE: Hillsboro River State Park

I go there several times a year and I enjoy the park. Rangers have always treated me wih respect. Yes there are campfires, but that is camping.
I think to many people need to chill out. You are going to a State Park not a amusement park like Disney. Their job is to protect the park and I have seen too many people just blatantly breaking rules.
The comment about campfires floored me - what the heck are you doing going to a campground???

RE: RV Park in Yuma

Plenty of RV parks, here. All are open so getting a spot will be super easy. Some of the amenities may not be available within the RV park. I am at Rivers Edge which is in Winterhaven CA ( just on the CA / AZ border. I work at the Marine base, commute is about 10 minutes. No WIFI.
Hope this helps.

RE: Sleep number mattress issue(s)

We have a select comfort at home and have had it for about 10 years. Absolutely love it. My MH came with a select comfort mattress and after less the a year I tossed it. Never could get it to hold air, constantly running the pump to re-inflate it. Wife still usually woke up with her side deflated.

RE: Class A motor home vs. car for trip out west

West Texas speed limit on I-10 between El Paso and San Antionio is 85 mph, add the "fudge factor" of 5 mph over sapped limit and you have 90!

RE: Class A motor home vs. car for trip out west

What is the reason you bought the RV? To drive a Honda on a long trip? The cost of gas may be high, but if you figure the difference of the current gas price to say a year ago the difference may be .50 / gal. If your motorhome gets 8 MPG and your trip is 4800 miles R/T then that is 600 gal of gas. With a .50 differential in price that amounts to an additional $300.
Me I will take the RV as I will be in much nicer places and eat (and drink) better!

RE: Pets in National parks

You can take your dog in Shenandoah National Park and they are allowed on trails provided they are on a leash of no more the 6 feet. My dog Rocco has also been on trails in Organ Pipes National Park. In the Grand Canyon they are allowed on trails above the rim and cannot be on any trails below the rim.

RE: Looking for Advise, please help!

I owned a 2000 Damon for 10 years. It was a work horse frame and I had no problems with it, of course I had a gas engine. Not sure wha the benefits of a front engine diesel could be. Diesel fuel is ow more expensive then gas (for some unknown but surely wackko reason).
The reason I bought a rear engine diesel, as many people do, is the ride. The noise is in the back of the vehicle making for a quiet pleasant ride up front. I do remember taking my gasser over the mountains and it gets rough listening to a gas engine Rever up right next to you.
I believe the front mounted diesels are less expensive and that is why they marketed, but I am not an expert on them.

RE: Fort DeSoto Park - how strict are they about no swimming?

Ft Desoto is a great campground. While it is on the water, you wouldn't want to go swimming there as the water is mostly ankle deep until you get 100 yards out, and then it gets up to your knees. There are holes in the area that you cannot see and you will have to swim.
As others have said - it is muddy - very muddy. If you have a kayak, launch and recover at your campsite. Enjoy the silence, birds and porposie that may come by a few feet from your campsite and you wonder how they get thru the shallow water.
The beach is down the road and it is a great beach. Sort of a long walk from the camp area, so you will need bikes or a car.
I have been in the water there - you just won't swim there because of depth. No alligators as it is salt water. Never seen a water snake but the birds are plentiful.
Enjoy your stay.

RE: Organ Pipe National Monument - verizon coverage

I had good coverage with Verizon. Don't worry about border jumpers. There are more Border Patrol agents there than any where else. Nice place to visit. Easy access across the border just make sure you have passport (good prices on liquor).

RE: Organ Pipe NM

You picked a good time of year to go. No water at sites, but 50 amp electric is available as is a very convientt dump site on the way out.
I felt safe for the entire visit.
My dog goes everywhere with me. There are some trails that go around the campground which we walked. He also went to the nightly ranger talks. Keep him on leash for his safety. My concern was cactus but rattlesnakes are also a danger to them in this park. The hiking trails have a wide enough swath that the dog will not get pricked. Rocco does have boots but did not wear them, as I didn't think there was that much concern.
There is a road that goes into back desert that we did take. We got several at several places. Have plenty of water for dog.
As another poster said, take your passport. Great Mexician seaport about 50 miles south. All very good roads. Dog needs paperwork to cross border.

RE: I-20 South Texas and I-10 Diesel

Can't talk to I -20 but I drive I -10 4 times a year. Diesel is readily available in towns, a bit expensive in the western part of Texas. I fill up at about a half tank. I drive a 38 ft with tow and generally have no problems but like everywhere, plan your escape route. I wouldn't worry about this.

Bounder Electric Stairs

A little help if possible. I am currently on the road and when I stopped this evening the front door electric stairs would not extend. Makes for a long step in and out of RV.
Anyone know where the fuse is located and if you have any other ideas. Worked perfectly when I got gas this afternoon, but no extend when pulled into camp site.
Thanx in advance

RE: First time from Florida to New Mexico

I make the trip from Tampa FL to Yuma AZ about 4 times a year. Many times solo. I travel I-10 an use my GPS feature to tell me where the nearest campground to my location is. There are plenty of campgrounds on the way and most are set up for large pull thru's.

RE: Winterhaven (or Bard) CA - Thanksgiving

I fulltime at Rivers Edge (well almost, I work in Yuma but live in Tampa FL and commute several times a year). Winterhaven is about 1 mile from Yuma. Rivers Edge is on Colorado River on the opposite side of Yuma, AZ. Good facilities, pool, laundry, Billiards, library, rest rooms always clean, usually quiet. Newspapers and ice available in RV resort. Many spots have trees (a big deal in Yuma area). Very easy access to I-8, and stores are nearby including Walmart, Home Depot, movies etc.
Should have room at Thanksgiving but you can call Gina at front desk and she will give you info. Be advised all deposits are non-refundable so make sure it is what yo want to do before booking.
