RE: Brake Voltage problem

Just went through a new brake job, and talked to the folks at Dexter. 10.5 volts at the wheels is the minimum. One bad magnet or connection can affect all wheels. If you've got 13 volts at the junction box on the gooseneck you should have about 12 at the wheels.
Also, if the brakes are at about 40,000 miles you'll need to replace everything. The magnets will have worn into the hubs and eaten them up.
First check the other end of the power cord (junction box somewhere near the king pin box). Then from the junction box to each wheel.

RE: Brakes and Bearings --- How Often to Service?

I have just had hubs, brakes, backing plates, brake assemblies and bearings replaced as a result of not having brakes at all. Checked out all the electrical and then called Dexter (frame/axle manufacturer). Brakes should be replaced at about 30,000 to 35,000 miles. I went over that to my detriment. :)
What goes out are the hubs and the magnets. With the magnets rubbing against the hubs each time the brakes are applied, the two reach the point where there is little or no contact. There were sizable ruts in all four hubs. I didn't know what I was looking at. I do now. :)

RE: laminate flooring

I'm voting for the lack of expansion room around the perimeter. :)
I don't think moisture would be the problem.

RE: 5th Wheel vs. TT

Hi Capvin, :)
You say you're used to pulling 4500#, and you're moving up to double that, so I would say the fiver will pull harder. But it'll pull better than the TT. :)

RE: Alaska travel

Hi Alberta Boy. :)
I've done it twice, in 2007 and last summer, 2011. AS has been said, road conditions are your major concern, and unfortunately, there's little predicting them. Just plan on delays and stretches of unpaved roadway that are either muddy or terribly dusty. In 2007 they were watering the unpaved sections which threw mud all over the rig. Last summer is was as though they ran out of water and the dust was just awful.
But it's worth it, and much of the beauty is in Canada. Both times I took the Cassiar route going up, and I strongly suggest that. It's beautiful and desolate. I love it. Western Canada is part of God's Country. Alaska and the Pacific Northwest are right in there, too. :)

RE: Matching a truck with a fifth-wheel

I used to pull a trailer lighter than that with a 3/4 ton 5.6 liter Hemi. I would not want to go back to that. Get a one-ton with more engine. :)

Why?
Why don't they go north like people with good sense? :)

RE: Battery indicator says LOW

Get new batteries first, since they are five years old. If that doesn't fix it, check the converter.
And take care of your batteries. :)

RE: Replacing King mattress with Queen mattress

I am in the process now. Bought a new queen mattress over the weekend. I will cut the board down to suit and also re-do the padded headboard. Not only will we have a lot more floor space, I'll also have room to make two small "night stands." Been wanting to do it for years. :)

RE: making the bed in a forest river wildcat

Lots of folks seem to want king beds nowadays. I'm in the process of converting to a queen bed. The king is too much of a hassle and consumes too much floor space. Plus I'll lose a little weight in the process.
I'm thinking about the added weight of floor tiles on the bed board (mentioned above). I wouldn't do that. It might not be much, but it's weight. Of course, I'm pulling an eight ton unit. Gotta be careful, or I'll be pulling a nine ton unit. :)

RE: Goodyear Tires AGAIN Gone Bad

I'm halfway through my second set of G-614s -- 16000 lb. trailer. Lots of miles, 18000 last summer. No issues. :)

RE: Hitting the 5th wheel hard hooking up.

Lifting the trailer off the ground with the hitch plate can also place a severe horizontal strain on the landing gear. The hitch plate should be at roughly the same height as the pin plate. A quarter inch high isn't going to cause you to high hitch. :)

RE: Lights Dim every so often

No matter how good the AC current coming in, the converter puts out 12V DC current for the lights. I also suspect the converter. :)

Two inches is about what happens to my 1-ton, and I've got a pin weight of nearly 2 tons. I think you're fine. :)

RE: Replacing the Springs

Try "trailer springs" or "RV springs." And type in your town or city.

RE: Two spare tires

I made a 17,000 mile journey (including the Alaska Highway) last summer with one spare for the trailer, and I didn't use that one. I think you're over-thinking your 2,000 mile trip. :)

RE: 38+ foot 5th wheel in state parks?

Any of the state parks that offer full hook-ups will accommodate that length and longer. Mine is nearly 40 ft. overall. If you travel in far West Texas, try Balmorea State Park. They even have cable TV. :)
And don't forget about the many Corps of Engineer parks in Texas and other states. The Corps always does it up right. :)

RE: Replacing the Springs

I recommend increasing the number of leaves by 1. Most of the trailers I've had, seen, pulled have inadequate springs. :)
