RE: Panic - dry camping and fridge use !

You said you have a generator. Run your generator every morning for an hour. Run it again every night at supper for an hour. That way you will have 120 volts for appliances while preparing food. During that same time your built in converter/charger in your trailer will put a charge on your battery/s and you will be fine for your week...or indefinitely. I also recommend a second battery installed in parallel on your trailer. Enjoy your week.

Bigfoot Levelers in a 2000 Cruise Master. Need manual

Has anyone had any luck finding manuals for a Bigfoot leveler system online. I need to figure this out for someone and am getting strange things happening. But I am thinking it is more of a finger fault on my part than anything else. Thanks in advance. John

RE: Tell me about for camper and SRW truck

It says that you CANNOT exceed ANY of the three ratings ( GAWR & GVWR ). So if the truck is rated for 9900# you can go to that but if you exceed the rear axle rating then you are dead in the water. You CAN do that if you get a TC like mine that has almost all the weight on the rear axle. Of the 3200# mine weighed, 2800# was on the rear. I was 400# over the GVWR but under all the GAWRs. For a 3/4T truck with a 8800# GVWR, that TC would have you parked pretty fast. Frank This makes sense and concurs with what we are taught by the MVSA and the mounties.

RE: Tell me about for camper and SRW truck

I found this which seems to state that it is the GVWR as stated on the door and not the front and back GAWR of the axles. This approach is what MVSA teaches and enforces. http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/cvse/vehicle_inspections/PDF/080530_Rec_Vehicle_GVWR_brake_DL.pdf

RE: Tell me about for camper and SRW truck

(quote=John & Angela)Good morning. In BC the weight sheet a dealer fills out when loading a trailer or camper on a vehicle clearly states the vehicle can not be loaded beyond its GVW. (/quote) GVW realm in BC can be the sum of the vehicle manufactures axle ratings or it can be a lessor amount the owner chooses according to BC folks that have posted their trucks registered GVW. Paragraph 4 at the bottom of the 19.05 reg eliminates the GVWR as the controling factor in loads a truck can carry. BC Motor Vehicle Act Regulations Weight scales: 19.05 (1) The driver of a vehicle on a highway, when so required by a peace officer, shall (a) stop the vehicle at the time and place specified by such peace officer for the purpose of weighing the whole or part thereof by means of stationary or portable scales, measuring the dimensions of the vehicle and load, measuring and inspecting the tires thereon, inspecting the load carried, or for any other purpose under this Act or regulations, (b) drive the vehicle to the nearest public stationary or portable scales for the purpose of weighing the vehicle and load,..... (snipped for length) (4) The gross weight of any vehicle or combination of vehicles shall be the sum of the individual gross axle weights of all the axles of the vehicle or combination of vehicles. (en. B.C. Reg. 68/71, s. 5; am. B.C. Regs. 413/97, App. 1, s. 11; 135/2003, s. 6.) <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< No1Hunter Dodge started using the 11.5" AAM axle in '03 on the 2500/3500 SRW and DRW trucks. The 2500 is rated at 6000-6010 RAWR due to the small spring packs and 3042 lb LT tires/wheels. For some reason Dodge has always rated the 3500 SRW at 6200 RAWR vs GM 3500 SRW at 7050 RAWR with the same exact axle. Again the limiting factor is that small 6200 lb spring pack/3195 rated tires and wheels. Try Dodge Body Builders Guide for lots of '12 Ram truck tech specs and '04 to '10 Dodge trucks. The 11.5" AAM axle is a big tough unit. Upgrading springs/wheels and tires is popular with experienced truck owners for carrying heavier loads with the 3500 SRW Dodge truck and also many F250/2500 truck owners. Thanks for passing on this info. I'll pass it in front of the folks at MVSA and see how they respond. I wonder though if they are actually referring to the gross weight of the vehicle and not the gross vehicle weight rating. In other words is that statement simply stating how they will add up your weights to determine the total gross weight of your vehicle?

RE: Tell me about for camper and SRW truck

There are no states or provinces that uses the vehicle manufactures GVWR to figure loads on the truck axles/tires. There are some states/provinces that may require a truck to be registered at a certain GVW or gross or a GVWR as determined by the state/province. My last TC was a 9.5' that weighed 3100 lbs fully loaded. Most of the time we ran at 2800-2900 lbs. The truck had a 6084 RAWR and came in at 5700 lbs. I added heavier shocks and the factory rear stabilizer bar. Good morning. In BC the weight sheet a dealer fills out when loading a trailer or camper on a vehicle clearly states the vehicle can not be loaded beyond its GVW. From what I understand it is based on provincial regulations (and I am not an expert on provincial regulations) It is also taught and stressed on the MVSA (motor vehicle sales authority) course all salesman must take and pass. It may be different for other places.

RE: Tell me about for camper and SRW truck

Common practice with an SRW truck is to ignore GVWR and concentrate on GRAWR. You can carry a lot bigger camper that way. Take for example a typical GM 2500HD truck. GVWR is 9200lbs. GRAWR is 6084lbs. Empty, nearly every 2500HD I have come across weighs 2800-2900lbs on the rear axle. Simple math tells you that you've got ~3200lbs before you hit the axle/wheel/tire limits on the rear. Step up to the 3500HD SRW, and you've got another 700lbs of payload capacity. This is just with STOCK trucks and the same holds true for the Fords and Dodges. Some will tell you that all you need on a 3/4 ton truck is to change the tires to the next larger size to turn it into a 1 ton SRW, and gain the extra 700lbs of payload capacity. As you can see, by using the ratings to your advantage, you have PLENTY of payload capacity for a really nice camper in an SRW truck. I think its true that many reference GAWR instead of GVWR but I believe in some States and provinces that is illegal. I can't speak for other locations but the only legal way to do it in BC for example is using the GVWR. It definitely dampens the sales of campers the size of the 1140 and 1150 as they can not go legally on most trucks and it jeopardizes the sales licence of the salesman. Nice campers though. They feel like a big motorhome inside.

RE: Tell me about for camper and SRW truck

I have an Arctic Fox 1150 at around 3600 lbs. and had to add air bags and a Hellwig sway bar for stability. Couldn't even imagine that on a SRW as the Dually was squirrely before the add on's Whoops, might have been a finger fault or typo there. A 990 comes in around 4150 with water and propane and no cargo so I suspect the 1150 should come in around 4500 unless it has a genny and air conditioner and then around 4700 give or take. With cargo probably just a little over 5000 lb. Probably just a typo. Brochure and specs.

RE: I5 OMG

We try to avoid I5 when we can. The snowbird route through Arizona, Nevada and Utah is easier on the dental work. Most of the interstates in Mexico are nicer than I5 (and a few others) now. I10 was pretty good through to Texas last year.

RE: Diesel MPG?

This is an interesting video. It is a bit of a rant and some of the conversions and numbers are a little whacky but it is kinda interesting. I know new diesel smart cars (no longer available in North America) are getting solid mid 80's for mileage but the 450 generation (up to 2007 like ours) still averages around around mid 70's US mpg. As far as I know though the North American Jetta TDI's are still getting around mid 50's to 60 mpg US and they are a practical 4 seat vehicle (albeit boring with no convertible option :) Anyway, heres the link. http://video.staged.com/localshops/vw_passat_785_mpg_in_the_uk

RE: How do all the tanks work?

Once water hits your grey tank and sits there it begins to become anerobic (using up the oxygen)and then becomes REALLY STINKY. Doing your dishes outside in a tub and throwing the water out is fine and an enviromentally friendly alternative. We don't use and are not bottled water fans for obvious reasons but we have noticed by the piles of them in trash cans and along trails that they have become a popular alternative in recent years to the old method of filling up a 3 gallon jug with home tap water. Kinda sad.

RE: Homemade wine...cheap, easy and not too darn bad!

We used to make our own in Canada as wine is pricey up here. Then we tried some Walmart Oakleaf varieties. Its pretty good. (It fits in a glass, how bad can it be) Anyway this year we brought 6 cases back to Canada for the summer. WE ARE SET. :)

Any one having difficulty posting pictures lately.

Just the last week or so. Consider this my test thread. Nope. No worky. I tried another forum and it worked so my host is working. Text is fine but when I try a pic it doesn't work. I don't think I am doing anything different. Any suggestions?

RE: What do full timers do to NOT become bored with life style

Do a little part time work. Learn a language and exercise the noggin. STAY IN SHAPE. Learn to maintain your own rig. Volunteer in the local community. Have fun and be good to everyone around you. You'll stay busy. I get the impression you are going to be a young retiree. Don't be surprised if you are turning down jobs left right and centre. When you have a life of experience, a good resume and a good work ethic you will spend lots of time dodging job offers. Nothing wrong with accepting them but make sure they are very clear that it is for the short term. Try to do something different every time regardless of the pay. Since you are already retired the money won't be a big issue. Good luck.
