RE: Phoenix area RV Park

Thanks for that suggestion about Desert Sands. When we have dates, I'll call ahead and hope they have room for us for a few days. Also thanks for the other suggestions. We plan to visit friends and relatives in the area. Do you know when the restrooms will be ready to use? I won't be able to check tomorrow but I will try in a couple days.

RE: Is Quartsite the place to be?

Carry on to Palm Springs area. About an hour and a half further. Lots of upscale RV parks to choose from including three Outdoor Resorts. Two in Indio and one in Cathedral city.

RE: Phoenix area RV Park

We are currently here. Desert Sands RV Park. The park is nothing fancy. We chose it because it is very close to where my brother is renting a vacation home for a week. It has all the basics including good free wifi. Unheated but clean pool. Quiet tennants half mixed between long term permanents and short term guests. We took a shot and just showed up and they had a site but i would call as they are kinda full. Its not pricey and is not in a fancy neighbourhood but is close to every kind of shopping you can think of. Every site has grass and most have a tree. Ours has an orange tree with oranges ready for the pickin. Restrooms and showers are being renovated so plan on being self contained. We are 40 feet long and still had room for our car in front. There is a concrete patio for each site. Not sure what the daily rate is but the week was 195 all taxes and everything else in. It is NOT a RESORT. We would stay here again if we need to come back to this area. Hope this helps.

RE: is this Norcold a 3-way?

A handy thing about running a fridge on 12 volt is not having to shut it down at fuel stops. Thats one thing we like about having a residential now. It was never really a pain in a motorhome but a trailer or truck camper was a hassle. can you elaborate please? (I'm a first time RV buyer and user) pardon my ignorance. Thanks Good morning. If travelling with the fridge on (assuming it is on propane) there is an open flame. This is of course is a fire hazard when fueling, especially with gasoline. By running it on 12 volts there is no flame and therefore no hazard. Those of us that use residential type fridges run them from inverters which of course draw their power from batteries. Again no open flame. The other option is to simply turn off the fridge and keep the door shut until you get to your destination. They stay cold for a long time if the door is not open. However if you are travelling long days this may not be the solution. As others have said though, its no big deal if it doesn't have a 12 volt mode. Usually only available on smaller models only (6 cubic foot or smaller) I hope this helps.

RE: Mar Rosa, Mazatlan

Re that picture: it reminds me of when we stayed there...I'm not sure I'm a good enough driver to get a MH in the front row spaces. I never saw anyone moving while we were there to see how it is done. It is a nice park. Good morning Belgique. Its not as bad as it looks. Staff guides you in and there are ususally plenty of volunteers to help with spotting. Its hard to see from the pictures but the little add on patios on the front row are quite nice. Great spot. It wouldn't bother me a bit to pay those rates for those spots but we never seem to stay in any place for more than a week so we never seem to get the benfit of longer stay rates. Here is a shot of the 3rd 4th 5th and last row. The street is on the left. http://www.johnandangela.ca/images/Mexico/Mazatlan%20small/IMG_0827.jpg

RE: Pemex Employees Pay to Work

Everything else aside, it is a cool website and news source. Beats the heck out of eluniversal which I found is frustrating to navigate. Thanks for posting.

RE: Mar Rosa, Mazatlan

We stay there when in Maz. Always a good experience. Great staff. Great location. The restaurant you are referring to is either the purple onion or the fat fish (pez gordo). Our preference is the latter. Shot from the hotel next door. http://www.johnandangela.ca/images/Mexico/Mazatlan%20small/IMG_0828.jpg

RE: what is this cable for

It is pre-wired for a satelite dish...kinda. On any new system you would need two of those coax cables. Easy to add. There may be a spot on the roof marked with where the opposite end is.

RE: US Health Insurance for Canadians??

Hmm I thought Canada had Health Care for all its citizens. Are you sayin they wont pay "out of Country" claims? Canadians have health insurance anywhere in the world for up to the cost that the procedure would cost in Canada. If it exceeds that the user pays the difference or you can opt for private travel insurance that will pay the difference for you. The province may limit the time you are covered when out of the country unless pre-arranged with the province. Most are 6 months and one up to 7 months without informing them of being away longer. Most will allow up to two years out of province if arranged prior, some longer. If a Canadian is out of their province longer than what the provinces health insurance guide lines allow they can opt for full coverage private insurance commonly known as ex-patriot insurance.

RE: Ferry from Baya to Mazatlan

Bonsoir Kidoo. The majority of folks take the Ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan. To be honest I am not aware of one from Cabo San Lucas to Mazatlan but I may be wrong. A friend who takes there 45 foot class A across every year said it was around 1000 bucks. I have no idea what a truck camper would cost. Mon femme a un web site ici avec beaucoup des photos de la Baja Peninsula. J'espere que cela vous aide. Our BAJA trip. Bon chance et bon voyage.

RE: Mexicali border crossing

Thank you for the info,we will be driving our truck. Is there a specific name for the east crossing that we should be looking for,or the name of the town on the american side? The little town on the US side is Calexico. We were across there about 6 weeks ago and came back the same day. Easy cross. Mexicali is a big town, agricultural and manufacturing. Not really a touristy kinda place. From what we have seen it was a clean but simple looking city. Busy place though, at least at rush hour. They have a fairly significant chinese population and there are a gazillion chinese restaurants.

RE: Stackable vs. combo washer dryer

We have had the original 2100 Spendide and now the 2100XC. It is a significant improvement over the original and works well for us as full timers. We are not willing to give up the closet space to go stackable as the 2100XC does what it has to do and you don't have to move clothes from on machine to the other. Put it in dirty, take it out clean and dry.

RE: Electric Refrigerator with Inverter Questions

We have a 21 cubic foot residential in our motorhome. Our dry camping hasn't changed that much from before we had the residential although I make a point of letting the generator run an extra 15 minutes or so when we do use it, which is one in the morning for 45 minutes (during breakfast) and one at night (during super). We do this so most of the heavy loads like microwave, toaster, coffee maker are all run off the genny, not the inverter via battery bank. I would recommend the following. 1. Have a minimum of 4 6 volt batteries. 2. Have at least a 60 amp converter/charger and preferably a 100 amp unit (common on the inverter/charger combos) This makes it worthwhile running the generator. 3. Have a 400 watt or greater solar system on the roof. It alone will provide more than your residential fridge requires...providing you are not parked under trees or the weather is crappy. If you can afford an extra 500 bucks put 600 watts up instead. Solar is cheap now. 4. Count on the fridge running at leat 5 minutes out of 15 (ours seems to run about 7 minutes out of 22...or less. When it cycles on I see the current draw on the inverter spike and then it settles to about 1o percent or under of the 2000 watt sine wave inverter. 5. Use a sine wave inverter. We have been dry camping for about the last three weeks and I would NEVER go back to a regular fridge....EVER.

RE: golf cart trailer

Here is another option that will leave you a few options open for the future as well. Although specifically sized to a smart car it will also acomodate a large four person quad or larger golf cart. It may be a little overkill for what you are doing and is probably not the cheapest solution for what you are trying to achieve. Around 2200 dollars for this one. In this case car and trailer come in around 2000 pounds with tounge wait around 225 to 250 pounds. Made in the USA at Kendon industries in Anaheim California. http://www.johnandangela.ca/images/smartcar/Towing%20setup/IMG_0430.jpg and another shot with our other smart. http://www.johnandangela.ca/images/2011/trip%20down%20from%20swanlake/IMG_2561.jpg Are you planning on using it as a golf cart or as an in campground transporter?

RE: Do you stop over night at truck stops?

We have seen it on more than one occasion but usually it is off to the side or even on gravel. There is a truck stop about 20 miles out of Vegas that we stay in and on the way down south this year we saw a couple of pop ups pull in and set up. Technically, like us they were not in the truck stop but off on the service road that goes no where. Can't see why you couldn't do it. They specifically parked close to us and under a street light. They were gone before we were in the morning.

RE: Splendide Combo Washer/Dryer XC2100

It will actually run quite happily on 15 amp. You will just need to turn everything else off while doing so. Usually not a problem for an hour or so it takes to do a load.

RE: RV PARK CLOSEST TO VEGAS STRIP

Well I don't know about cheap but circus circus is on the srip and walking distance to everything. Its all pavement but sell laid out, decent size sites for any combo, nice pool, basic RV parts supplies, great staff, clean, quiet (as the strip can be) and secure as anywhere else. My guess is with your coach you will be paying around 40 to 45 dollars for full hookups. You are very close to the Stratosphere as you can see from this picture taken in the campground. Good location. :) http://www.johnandangela.ca/images/smartcar/IMG_2675.jpg

RE: Keep those panels clean boys and girls.

I pull into the 'truck bay at the local car wash stand on the elevated raised walk way and wash them with the rinse cycle or I just drag out the ladder and wipe them down with a wet cloth using only water you should try try to avoid high pressure on framed edges my panels are uniSolar thin film no glass no substrated weather worries Agree on the nix on the high pressure thing. I use windex and a cloth...about three times a year. (see earlier comments ref being lazy) :)

RE: Thinking About Calling It Quits

I guess it depends on what one considers a road trip is. We have been on the road for just short of a month, moved 5 times and have gone through 329 dollars worth of fuel and 321 dollars worth of camping fees including campgrounds, LTVA fees and dumping fees. . The rest is food etc that I would need anyway. Just curious what type of travelling and road trips you do. Interesting to see different expectations of the lifestyle.
