RE: Leaking Exhaust Manifolds

I bought a replacement manifold for my 1990 Winnebago 454 at AutoZone fairly cheaply. I don't remember the exact amount I paid. But, it doesn't stick out as being expensive. Also, I replaced it myself. But, others have pointed out the risk with regard to exhaust manifold bolts. If they break, it will be a problem. Last, I would not run a gasket. The manifold should be trued up and should bolt up and seal without a gasket. Make sure that you let the engine idle and cool down when you arrive and that will help mitigate the issue. I haven't had any issues with mine using that method. To be honest, if I had it to do over, I'd probably just get a good set of headers and run it. That will help performance and also they will get the heat away from the motor better than the exhaust manifolds. So, if you get one with cracked manifolds, I'd just replace both with a set of headers.

RE: 1997 454 MPG

My 1990 Winnebago (31 feet) has a 454 with a TBI (throttle body injection). I get 6.5MPG or so. You should get better than that.

RE: 2000 Bluebird Wanderlodge LXI

If the unit you are looking at has a slide, make sure the numatic seal by HWH is not leaking. Very expensive to repair. Richard Not any more. Some of the guys at the Wanderlodge Owners Group banded together and developed a better fitting seal. On top of that, its a lot cheaper as well.

RE: Atlanta

Hi from Atl. . . ahh, the monthly 'gripe about Atl traffic' thread. Straight through is fine EXCEPT rush hours (7-10 a.m,3-7 pm) The traffic on Saturday is terrible South of town (mm 264 to to mm 212), thanks to all you folks going to & from Florida (note mostly NOT Ga tags as you go thru). Thru town is OK.,regards, Craig Yep. Going through Atlanta is much ado about nothing. I have driven my motorhome all over town (75, 85, 285, 400, 675, and everything in between) and its just not a big deal. Take 75 (or 85 if you are coming from that direction) straight through. Its not a big deal. Just avoid rush hour (7-10am and 3-7pm Mon-Fri) and you will be just fine. Any time other than rush hour is fine. Will there ever be a back up or something outside those times? Yes. But, its the exception and not the rule. One tip is to stay in a middle lane when you go through downtown. There are a few places where the right hand lane exits and you'll want to miss those. Atlanta traffic's bark is worse than its bite to be honest.

RE: A little thought on Fuel Mileage

I have a 1990 P30 chassis (with 454 TBI). I get 6-6.5 MPG normally. I occasionally pull a Maxima on a tow dolly. But, I do that on fairly flat land. I could see 5.7 MPG being in the believable range if I was hitting a lot of hills with a heavy toad like you are. It might be a little low - but not too much.

RE: Topsail Hill Preserve State Park

First off, you won't want a campfire in Florida in June. It is way too hot for that. Next, if you like outdoorsy stuff, then your best bets are to hit the beaches. You will be in the area with the most beautiful beaches you'll find. Its about the most relaxing thing you could ever do (well...for me and my wife anyhow). Another thing to do is to go fishing in the Gulf. You can probably find a charter boat fairly reasonably. I've been out with a friend of mine that has a boat (plus fishing gear) and it was a lot of fun. Or, rent some gear and try fishing from the shore. I've watched some folks do that and it seems like something I may want to try someday. You could also take your bikes and ride down 30-A. There is a nice bike trail that runs along 30-A and is an easy and fun ride. There are several areas to go hiking (Point Washington for example). But, beware the yellow flies. They are horrible inland. Take lots and lots of bug repellant if you do that. Or failing all that, you can head down to Destin and do all the touristy stuff. :-)

RE: 2004 Bounder 38N and NADA Accuracy

NADA is suspect. Lots of folks like to refer to it. But, in some cases, NADA does NOT use actual sales as there may not be enough of them. They will use a depreciation algorithm and that gets dicey. The more common the coach, the closer NADA is to the real price. The rarer the coach is, the more inaccurate NADA is. I've seen some coaches where NADA was off by a factor 2 or more. Weird part is that NADA is supposed to reflect prices. I don't think it does a good job. Their only redeeming quality is that there is nothing else out there that even tries much and is available to the public.

RE: High center

First time I went out in an RV - a rental - the sewer pipes were on the bottom side of the RV and located UNDER the body (exposed). I went over a SMALL rise and it took out the sewer. I dumped 20+ gallons of******right then and there. It was a mess. When I took that rental back, they informed me I was NOT the first person that had that problem with that RV. Needless to say, when I bought an RV, I bought one with the drain pipes located in a protected area. It would also be OK if the pipes were near the axle (or behind it). That would've helped keep them from bottoming out. Other than first incident where I bottomed out the pipes, I've had NO incidents with high centering whatsoever.

RE: Learn Something New Every Day...

" Take the connector off post wash them and the top of bat. off with garden hose." I believe this is very bad advice and will shorten the life of your batteries. You should never use anything but distilled water to "top off" your batteries with. Jim I didn't get the impression he was topping off the water in the batteries with a garden hose. Instead, he was just rinsing off the top of the battery with a garden hose.

RE: Chattanooga, TN To Columbus, GA Bypassing Atlanta

Thanks for the responses so far. I was looking carefully at the GA map and noted the following may be a more rural route with more Interstate travel but still bypassing Atlanta. I value your opinions... what do you think of this? South on I-75 to exit #288 in GA West on 113 / 61 thru Cartersville, GA Follow SR 61 South to loop around Carrollton Exit Carrollton Loop to US 27-A to Newman I-85 South to Columbus 61 is going to take you through suburbs and a LOT of traffic lights. I would take the 53 to 27 route you mentioned above before taking that one. Still, I am not sure why you want to avoid Atlanta. Can you explain your reasoning for wanting to skip it? If you time it right (and this is not hard to do), there is no reason to avoid Atlanta - its bark is worse than the bite. Its really not very difficult to navigate through. If you need help on timing, I can give you some tips on that.

RE: Older Widebody RV

I think the regulations were changed to allow them in 85-86 (plus or minus). Most manufacturers needed a few years to make the switch. I know that some made the switch sooner than others. So, its really a manufacturer specific question. But, most of them were likely offering some sort of wide-body by the early 90's. That does not mean, however, that ALL coaches offered after that timeframe are widebodies. To be honest, I don't think that all of them are wide-bodies even now (but I could be wrong on that). FWIW, my 1990 Winnebago Chieftain is a narrow body and it was close to top of the line for Winnebago back then (if I am not mistaken).

RE: I 15 South through Salt Lake City and Provo

I just drove it on Thur night in a rental car (well...minivan). We flew in to the SLC airport on Thur night and drove south. There are lots of construction barrels/cement barriers and lane shifts from SLC south through Provo. Also, the roads are pretty rough. As I understand it, there will be no construction or lane closures through Jan 2 (based on local news). I'd probably drive my RV through it in the daytime. Not so sure I'd do it after dark.

RE: Choosing a RV

I use my motorhome for tailgating all fall (plus other trips as well). The area I park it requires a tough turn. I watched a fellow tailgater work that turn for 2 years before he gave up and bought a motorhome. On top of that, I'm frequently only there for tailgating for 1 night. Connecting and disconnecting a 5'er for 1 night is a major pain in the rear. Heck, its a pain for 2 nights. If I used mine in a fashion where I set it up for more nights, I'd probably consider the 5'er. But, I don't. Plus, the wife likes the ability to use the bathroom or grab a snack out of the fridge or make a sandwich all while on the go. Having the motorhome makes that easy. A 5'er or a TT would not. I have a 2006 Dodge Cummins 3500 (single rear wheel, though) and she also doesn't like the ride of it (too stiff). So, that's another minus. The motorhome has a cushier ride.

RE: older class A

NADA tends to use a straight depreciation method on RV's. The older the RV, the less accurate their figures are. At that age, its all about condition. I'd look at what is for sale out there and do some comparing/contrasting and figure that most asking prices are a bit high. Then you can get an idea of what it may really be worth. My 1990 Winnebago Chieftain listed for $2-3K last time I looked (and its been a good while). It will bring more than that on the market.

RE: RV Depreciation

Generally, its been my observation that you'll get about a 25% depreciation after 1, 20% for year 2, 15% for year 3, and about 10% per year after that. That's just a rough rule of thumb. But, it will get you in the ballpark in absence of real sales numbers.

RE: RV Park near Atlanta, GA

Don't even think about Jones RV Park. For Lawrenceville, I'd look at Ft Yargo (as mentioned before). The other alternative is to see what COE campgrounds might be open on Lake Lanier.

RE: How many RVers dont use a awning?????

I use my 1 awning all the time. I like the shade for one and will sit out under it. Its also nice to sit out when it rains and stay dry. And, when we are out at a sunnier campsite, it helps keep the sun off one of the bigger windows during the heat of the day and that helps keep the inside a little cooler. Next RV I get I will have awnings over all the windows - just to help keep the sun off them if nothing else.
