RE: Transfer switch

Seems as though that device was recalled. http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5008

RE: Monaco Executive GM ignition key upgrade :)

Oh, I know the OPs feeling, I would have changed it out too.

RE: Having trouble getting rear end fixed

Huh. That's strange. I'd say you've been more then patient. If it's possible, give them a call and suggest you're coming over with a tow truck to drag it out of there so they need to make it so it can roll. That might light a fire under them. If they tell you to come get it, they probably didn't really have the skill or equipment to work on it in the first place.

RE: Having trouble getting rear end fixed

Bummer. I don't know what your mechanic is doing...those pumpkins have tags on them listing the manufacturer and the model number of the differential. Shouldn't take nearly a year to get or find the right parts for it so they can quote the work. Have you considered moving it to a different shop? Is it in a Truck shop or at a RV repair place?

RE: Having trouble getting rear end fixed

My Dana started leaking gear oil around the hot pressed axle tube because I hit a speed bump at 60MPH. But not down the axle shaft, so the brake pads do stay dry. While researching the problem, I found salvage Dana 80's at www.heavytruckparts.net in the $1400 range. I wasn't looking for Dana 70's but I believe they have some. After seeing that price, all I did was to clean up the area real well, then ran Permatex High-Temp Red RTV Silicon around the tube to differential seal area. Two layers of silicon. Worked fine for almost a year, until last week when I went over a 4" deep rut at an angle (and too high a speed). It puked out a cup or so of gear oil, but the level was still detectable. Topped it off and got back on the road. So now I'm looking at putting another layer of silicone around it. When you say your differential went out...what does that mean?

RE: Monaco Executive GM ignition key upgrade :)

Great job! I prefer Ford keys myself, lucky for me mine already is a Ford key. Since you replaced your keylock with a Ford, did your Chevy engine stop leaking oil yet? :)

RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

Five miles east of Flagstaff on US40 is the Walnut Canyon NM. Ancient Indian cliff dwellings. VERRRRY interesting site. They say up to 1000 people lived there. Nice loop walk. Haven't stopped there but was thinking about checking out that little place that says it has 200 micro brews. Not sure if it's a bar or not. Corner of E. Butler & E. San Francisco. Might grab something unique for my brother.

RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

I drove perhaps 45 miles after my valve broke and dropped onto the top of the piston...pounding it into the top of the piston. Stopping 45 miles away from the shop would have made no difference in the repair costs. According to them. I agree with pianotuna, don't beat yourself up. Stuff happens, you do what feels right to you at the time.

RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

BTW, MrWizard, my blown engine cost me $5734. New piston, ream work, new head, new valves, some new bearings, new turbo ('cause apparently, when a valve goes, so goes the turbo). Hope yours is even less!

RE: Battery water level

Why 'just over the plates' ? The water reserve of the cell is 'just over the plates' to the bottom ring. If everyone filled to just over the plates and checked water levels at the frequency of most there would be a lot of batteries with exposed plates. A battery in good condition and a three stage charger should allow you to fill the batteries to 1/4 inch below the ring without boiling over. If a battery is doing that I would get out the hydrometer and check all cells in the bank. A bad cell will cause a good three stage charger to put out voltages that are out of whack. I have had six 6v batteries, interstates, on my Freedom 458 three stage charger for for six years and always filled each cell to 1/4 inch below the fill ring and have never had a battery cell boil over. They get filled twice a year. What Gary said...X2.

RE: Transfer switch

There is a way...if there is a heavy load on the transfer switch contacts, like an AC compressor just turning on, or the toaster and MW running, the arc caused could burn the contacts so severely as to make it behave badly. Recommendation from most experts is to NOT have the shore power plugged in when starting the genset. Sure, you may be able to get away with it for years, but it's best to minimize repetition of that sequence of events.

RE: Battery water level

I would wonder if your multistage converter is set wrong. Most of the newer units have a setup procedure. Check that first.

RE: Problem with Generac NP-G66 generatop

Go here for a manual on your Generac. Note that field excitation is required and usually comes from the circuitry that starts the engine. Called Field Boost. After the engine is running, the AC voltage regulator takes over.

RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

Happy to hear you've got a new plan. Northern AD will take care of you. Rate is $95/hr. Scott is the best! Crew is great too! Might see you there, MrWizard, I'm going in for more work this week. Delayed my trip North just so I could get it done at NAD.

RE: Transfer switch

A lot of them are installed in a housing right behind the Circuit Breaker panel. With mine, I have to remove the entire panel to access the transfer switch.

RE: Why do I feel like appoligizing....??

I think that there really isn't any (or very little) class envy going on regards Tenting vs. RV'ing. It's more to do with age. The older you get, the less you're interested in roughing it with a backpack. Years ago, I was getting ready for another backpacking trip on the Pacific Crest Trail. Bought my food, filled up my camp stove, checked the tent in the back yard, the whole nine yards. Next morning at 5AM, got dressed in my hiking clothes, swung on the backpack and stepped on the scale. 60lbs of gear. 4 day trip over country as beautiful as you can find. Stepped off the scale, walked into the living room, swung the backpack off, and sat in my easy chair. Backpack sat there for a week. I've never gone on another overnight backpacking trip. I'd just had enough. You get to a certain age, and travel and camping is still interesting, but many would just rather do it in an RV of some kind. I'll stick to my RV from now on. Day packing I still do. But no overnight tenting. Those youngsters who still tramp around the wild for days at a time are still enjoying it, and think that we're being lazy. Not so. Just disinterested in doing what I did for 15 years. In other words, no need to apologize. JMO.

RE: over heated & Broke down, update now in Flagstaff

I almost swung through Prescott today on my way to Montezuma's Castle but with all the fire problems they've been having lately, thought better of it. Wish you all the luck, Mr. Wizard!!!!

Sorry for your troubles...and that I didn't see this earlier. I too would have recommended Northern Arizona Diesel in Flagstaff.

RE: Solar Eclipse

I holed up at the Grand Canyon Caverns RV Park in expectation of a grand show...disappointed as my pinhole box never showed more then a quarter of moon shadow. Guess I was too far north. The maps they've been showing the last few days made me think it would be a 'Ring of Fire' but, no.

RE: Diesel Pusher Generator sound level

Mine is directly below the drivers seat. Only time I can here it on the road is when I'm parked at a light. When boondocking and parked, with the TV on, can barely hear it. I have heard of some mufflers going bad, and mufflers not properly connected at the factory, so if yours is very noticeable, you might check that.
