RE: Progressive RV Insurance MI vs FL Cost

I have Progressive through USAA, and will be cancelling when this policy expires. Bing/Google their Chairman, Peter Lewis for the reasons.
Lewis also has a GREAT FRIEND (Soros) so don't forget him either :(

RE: 454 still getting hot now what?

Small ports in a cylinder head typical produce low rpm torque. Larger ports make increase HP. There is a fine line of science involved to try and produce the best port for the vehicle intended.
The early 90s 454 were so choked down..it is similar to you running a foot race with 1 nostril pinched shut....you just can't perform as you could if you could get the needed air.
Prior to the TBI 454s, we typical had 3 major head port configurations..."peanut" which was used on pickups and commercial engines and non performance vehicles(ie: Caprice, Impala etc), oval port and large (or rectangular) port which were used in passenger and muscle cars.
When the TBI engines came into play...their head ports were smaller in size than what we had called "peanut" port heads of the carbed 454 era. These new heads did have a different combustion chamber than the earlier version. The combustion chamber had been changed to work with the smaller ports, help burn(which helped tail pipe emissions). The engines though producing only 190hp...were basically pigs as compared to what we all remember the 454 with carbs being
Since the names of these port configurations seem to involve a bit of overlap, is there a source for casting numbers or other positive ID of which head is which?
Bill, When the proper number shows up maybe "Mortec" will have the descriptiom.....

RE: 454 still getting hot now what?

I have the old head gaskets but it doesn't make sense to me that the cooling openings are there and not being used completely. I thought maybe a motor home engine might take a different gasket that let the coolant flow more through those passages. 1/8" hole covering a 3/4" opening seems very restrictive for an engine that works that hard. Just a thought, which way does the coolant run? Up through the block into the head or through the head down into the block? Maybe if it goes through the head first it is to keep the coolant there longer .........
txrparrothead
On the older "MARK 4" engines the water enters the block first then wanders up through the heads and out the manifold....
235 ponies stock from the factory lurks in that critter....
Now for the heads, Check the last 3 digits on the heads, Should be 236 as all stock peanut ports from the factory are (Good heads).
Two types of head gaskets are available....!!!!! SERIES & PARALLEL and just maybe someone grabbed the incorect gasket off the shelf long ago.

Anyone remember the Chevron white pump and 100 octane??
Yup. Had a high compression Norton that would run well ONLY on that gas.

RE: 454 still getting hot now what?

92 GBM 454
Factory radiator rebuilt/re-cored all new water pump belts hoses
Got it out on the freeway for the first time yesterday. 225deg and NO power will barely make it up a hill.warning alarm going off I just kept going At this point I have spent so much time and money I could really give a sh*t less if it burns completley up.
What does the "GBM" stand for? Another question: I have the heads off my 454. Where the block and heads mate there are 3/4" coolant passages on both parts but on the head gaskets the holes in that location are 1/8" dia. Is there a good reason for that or did I get the wrong 454 gaskets?
Where are the "OLD" gaskets for comparison?

Thanks Bill.
Since most of my catalogs, Tools & such are now retired also I don't frustrate myself finding everything.....
Grabbed one of my good books and behold the catalog was there, Sent the info on in another web site so everyone should be happy.

RE: More P30 454 water pump questions

Since I cannot find my "Stewart water pump" catalog you might want to contact "Summit racing 1-800-230-3030" and talk with the tech section..
Perhaps they will even give you the Stewart phone number so you can talk to the owner..

RE: Gas Mileage on 454 Gasser

There are many different versions of the Q-jet. One big thing is where the power valve starts to kick in. It is vacuum operated. As the vacuum drops, the mixture is enriched. If that enrichment is set too aggressive, you may be running in mixture enrichment at cruise. That will kill the mileage. To start with, of course do a full tuneup. Then buy a vacuum gauge. This will help you monitor where the vacuum is at cruise. Then you can compare that to how the power valve is set up and possibly change it to something more suited to your application.
Lets reverse some of this proceedure stuff Daveinet, Most of the Quads off the shelf come with 11 inches of vacuum springs which means once your vacuum reaches that 11 inch point your "Power rods" start dumping fuel for more power....
I pulled the clock out of the dash (2/18 is the size) and installed a nice vacuum gauge (2 inch increments) which is easy to see...
NOW you can find out by driving around where your vacuum range is, For me idle is 19" (depending on the weather) cruising down the flat level slab at 62 MPH (no wind) it runs 14"--17" but never close to the stock 11" spring dumping.
Now for the hill climbs....Small hills BUT long the vacuum drops to 9"-11" which on your stock carbs will be needlessly dumping fuel, You see I have the STOCK SPRING in mine which opens up at 6" and I do go below 6" at times.....
See folk's you gotta know where your at so you have the correct direction to head into.....
I have suggested that all of you carb folk's simply visit a good carb site (Cliff Ruggles) and look at some of the goodies offered...

RE: Gas Mileage on 454 Gasser

If the Q-jet carb hasn't had any work done on it for a long time I am sure it is due. On mine the power valve was stuck the floats were soaked and sunk in the bowl I also had the jetting dropped down to 72's I think. I had the distributor recurved back this spring and presto. Went from 7.5 to 8.75 mpg. but I'm only pushing a 28'er.
Topflight & Brian, Both of you are correct......
Strange how topflight finds 8* or below timing to satisfy his engine and mine loves 10* and balks at 11* during the summer heat...
On the carb side as I learn more about the "Quad" it makes me want to learn more from the fuel inlet which can be enlarged greatly with stock parts...Those fuel consuming hill climbs will suck that carb bowl dry quickly will benifit with the inlet mod (start with a 130).
Carb "Lower idle airbleed, Upper idle airbleed, Idle tubes, Idle downchannel restrictions along with idle bypass air" are just some of the carb mods that will jack up your MPG and have a much cleaner running engine.
My last trip to Arizona in April proved that the higher altitudes are now a NO PROBLEM, problem......
Still need to turn down the carb "Air/fuel" screws at least 1 turn, Remember that with the throttle blades barely open (Below 1500 RPM) your still running on the idle jets so lean them out, Generally the A/F idle jets kick out about 2600 RPM or the throttle blades position and the main jets take over......
Please get on your computers and lookup "Cliff Ruggles" web site and learn....You will find your particular problem OR signup (FREE) and ask away, I've been there for over a year and built up a stage 11 carb along with my carb GURU.....

RE: Fuel system cleaner

Thanks for the replies people...
I've got a new fuel and air filter on order... I have no idea how old the existing ones are... and I'm going to Wally World to get me some Seafoam... I think I'll get enough Seafoam to treat the entire fuel tank (32 gal?)... it won't hurt to run some through the coach engine, right? (I have a new fuel filter going to the TBI).
We're planning a road trip from Denver to Salt Lake next week... should I put the Seafoam in before we head out (we'll use the genny/AC as we run down the road)? Is this the kind of stuff that works better under stop and go conditions (give the chemicals time to 'heat soak' any deposits during cool down periods) or can I run it through 'all at once'?
I run (1) can of sea-foam in with 16-20 gallons of gas which reaches out to all of the gas consuming engines....
Once everything has been initially cleaned and running well (might take a few tanks) then about every 4th-5th tank I'll add some just to maintain the system......
Once the Seafoam gets into the system and your driving it clean it will continue to clean with the engines off....

RE: 454 carberator engine opinions???

The big disadvantage of a carb is cold engine start up and altitude compensation. As long as the carb is not leaking, and that includes leaking air around the throttle pivot, it should be OK. TBI was created for smog, no other reason. Really, until you get to port injection, the FI advantages are very small.
The choke is not really a big problem, Just install the electric choke and dial it in.
Altitude is another story, Jet settings are a big contributing factor cuz from the factory they mostly are in the rich mode, Air/fuel settings need to be DUG into very deeply....
Idle air bleeds are the culprit and only a few mess with them, Do you know that tooling down the road your still on the idle jet circuit depending on the amount of carb primary blades tilt.
Once setup through the many Quad circuits your altitude range will become superb along with decent MPG increases.....

RE: 1992 - Class A - Bounder Ford F53 460 - which oil is best?

Hi,
I have recently purchased a bounder(1992 Class A Ford F53 460) and want to replace the oil. Which oil would be best for it? It has 80K miles on it. I don't have the manual yet.
I want to use full synthetic, but not sure about which number and which brand. Anyone uses Royal Purple?
Thank you for your time,
DJ
I've used Royal purple (15-40) for years and now for a test the new oil is "Delo 400 15-40) which contains e'nuf "ZDDP" to keep our engines happy.
Still run RP in my street/strip El Camino and Mobile 1 10-30 in the "HHR".
I like the Delo 400 in the RV better than the RP cuz the oil pressure remains very steady at all RPMs and the RP jumps around depemding on the oil heat.

RE: 454 Tech Questions

I'm also exploring whether or not the old 454's have reached the range of replacement over rebuilding - headers would definitely put it in the replace zone.
Huh....Could you please clarify please.

WTH are they?
The manifold cleaned up nice all except this pitted plate. Took 2 days of PB, a 3/8 hex and a breaker bar to loosen those little bolts.
Two holes going nowhere.
Sensor ports?
"EGR" holes....Don't need them? just block it off again.

RE: transmission fluid and hard pulls

I rechecked the tranny fluid and it was about a quart low. I have topped it off. I'm pretty certain it was the tranny fluid. Everything seems to be OK as far as operation. Thanks a whole bunch for the suggestions. This board is the best!!
BTW, I do have a really nice cooler installed on this transmission. It was done by the PO and looks like a high quality unit.
Thanks again..
Do you have a picture of your "nice cooler"?
