RE: Taking the ferry to Juneau

Really depends on just what you're planning to do there. There's the Mendenhall Glacier, several gold mine sites that are great to go to, an active small boat harbor, salmon hatchery, The Red Dog Saloon, Cable Car, a number of museums.....
You get the idea. We spent 4 days there and still didn't have any spare time. The only one leg way to get there is from Haines, but the ferry from Skagway goes to Haines and then Juneau. Camping in the Mendenhall area is great, but if you're on a shoestring, you can camp free in the Douglas City Park. Boondocking, but water and a dump is available right across the street. PM me if you need particulars as you need to register in Juneau.
I'd take the rig and spend some time getting to know the place. Putting the rig on a ferry is no big deal and the guys directing you are great. Besides, you can then brag you did it. LOL
Have a ball. We've been up 3 times in the last 4 years and will go again.

RE: How othen do you test the breakaway brake system?

On the Air Force One brake system, if you disconnect the air line and electrical plug and then pull the break away plug, the system locks the brakes from the emergency tank. By then placing the bypass plug in, air is released from the system through the forward air connection and can be verified by feel and sound.
This checks the system every time you disconnect. Good system.

RE: Pleasant surprise...no bad smells!

We are gone 6 months a year and NEVER use anything in our tanks. We dump when almost full or when planning on not using it for a month or more, and rinse the black with a built in flush system. All the additives and deodorants are a fine way to separate a man from his money.

RE: internet in your motor home?

We spend a lot of time in areas where there is not even cell phone service, let alone broadband service. This includes Alaska, the northern plains, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas border areas and places coast to coast. The only thing that seems to work for us is Hughes Net. Speeds are not blazing fast, but they're faster than I can type, so we're pleased. We only have one subscription and one modem. We move it from the rig to the house as we travel or spend time at home. We have a fixed antenna at home and a seeker on the Bus.
It's the best solution for us.

RE: Sewer donut? Or is what I already have ok...

What you have is fine. In areas where the health department is being stupid, the park will be required to furnish a threaded ground piece. Where the park just wants to keep the neighbors from bit**ing, your unit will fit into the pipe and a rock or 2 will hold it. If they still grumble a rag can be wrapped around it to "seal" it. A look at the "caps" they furnish for closed pipes on unoccupied sites will tell you how serious they really are and you can proceed accordingly. I haven't needed a donut since I started using a rig with a dump tank more than 20 years ago. I stopped carrying one about 10 years ago.

The Cap, and the biggest, tallest one you can find. No matter what you get you'll find you never have enough room. Yeah, bigger is better!

RE: copilot 11 help

I've given up on CoPilot completely. THeir help line is a joke and just looking at their web site tells you they have little interest in the basic CoPilot software. Not only that, you can't use it with Win7 64 or 32 bit operating systems.

RE: Dealer responsible?

Why would you winterize it? New MH shouldn't have any water or waste until arrival at dealer and they begin prepping it for delivery.Huh??? And how do you think they check their plumbing and connections? Not only do they put water in the systems, but the manufacturers I've seen sanitize the system before it leaves the factory to rid it of anything it might have picked up in building.

RE: Need assistance with oil bath hubs

If you want to drain the hubs for a lube change, draining through the drain plug will not get all the fluid out. The outside bearing holds about 25-35% of the lube behind it. According to Freightliner, getting that out is not necessary for a lube change, but you obviously will not the full capacity back in after you drain it. Also, getting fluid into and out of the center portion of the wheel is slow due to the lube viscosity. If you do want to drain it all, the procedure for torquing the wheel after removing the outer bearing is very specific. Be sure to follow them closely and use new wheel nut locks.

RE: Toad wiring-diode issue

I don't know why so many people are so afraid of diodes. They are extremely easy to install, they have no moving parts, are sealed from moisture and work without anyone even knowing they're there. The only problems I've ever had in over 100,000 miles of towing was that a wire came off one of the diode pins, probably due to a very rough road. Less than 5 minutes to fix and no tools or parts necessary. Use doides.

RE: Why do goosenecks use safety chains but fifth wheels don't?

That could very well be the reason. My 22' double deck hog trailer easily carried 22,000 lb of live hogs. These trailers went to 30' and longer and the 22k didn't count the trailer weight, just the "live" load. (pardon the pun) LOL

RE: Using Fresh Water/Black/Gray Tanks in the winter

We had a 2005 Diesel Bounder and had a few problems with it. The rear heat goes about 40% to the wet bay where the tanks and valves are. The only problem we had was the water heater was in the rear and the water line to the heater would freeze if you weren't using hot water on a regular basis. You can help your system by leaving all under sink doors open so the warm air can get to the pipes. Also, make sure the refrig ice maker is winterized, and that your refrig is on to keep other things from freezing in that area.
The water pipes in the RV are PEX and can be frozen with no problems, but the fittings will split if frozen solid. Antifreeze in the tanks should not be necessary if you're using the tanks and keep the heat on. However, if there is a washer in the rig, that should be winterized and antifreeze put into the drain trap for it, the shower and any sink not being used.

RE: Close fit on Overhead door Clearance, Freightliner

I'd call Winnebago first. My Allegro Bus has an automatic system but there is a way to bypass it for maintenance. As long as you're just driving it into the barn, you won't have a problem with the drive train.
if Winne can't help you you could also try Freightliner Help line.

Yep, been that way for years. I now own 3 DeWalt 12V drills. I'll probably own a few more before I die. My daughter is a Lowes store manager and she says she CANNOT get any of the tool companies to listen or care.

RE: Streamin Video by Wi-Fi

Hi,
Most campgrounds won't have a lot of bandwidth. If you use more than your fair share your experience may be poor--and everyone else using the service may also suffer for that.Yep, you bet. Just look up WIFI bad connections, and read the opinions of your fellow campers. Then understand that you'll be the guy causing all that grief.
If you really want to do this sort of thing, get a Hughes Net setup and pay for the bandwidth you need.

RE: Wal-Mart Road Atlas

Get a hold of the Store Manager or one of the Assistant Managers and have them enter the UPC (70609 94261) into a Talzon or their inventory computer screens and check the in store stock, reorder date and when they will be in your store. Some times you have to push them, but if they're really out but inventory shows them with 100 in store, you'll never get any. Just a question of getting to the right guy or gal.
