RE: My Next Modification

Has anyone used one of these things?
I noticed the ad was rather conspicuous by it's lack of any spec sheet. How much water does it heat, how fast? Temp rise @ GPM flow rate. Hook up requirements, gas line size and plumbing, compartment size, insulation, max temp, electrical requirements. A copy of the installation instructions and the operating instructions would go a long way to answer a lot. Many questions, few if any, answers. I don't buy a pig in a poke.

RE: Quartxsite

There is tons of parking out behind the big tent. It's in a dry river wash and looks chaotic, but just don't block anyone in and watch for the soft sand. DO NOT park along Rt 95 where No Parking signs are posted. Despite seeing numerous cars parked there. Local LEOS will ticket them; when and what time is the only question, but it happens each year. Enjoy the show. We're going out Tuesday.

RE: Need an Inverter

Great info. The fact that the Cotek's are Chinese, so hard to find, the company appears to be South African and that there doesn't appear to be much history on them was one of my concerns. The Tripp Lite's seem to be more widely sold and a US company to boot. I especially like the weight of their units as weight usually means better heat dissipation, and an overall more substantial unit. Our fridge is a 21 cu ft powered by 6 Lifeline batts. Duty cycle and use show me that my bank drops .1-.2v overnight running off the 3000W house inverter. We also have 2 135W solar panels. I did a search for Mr Wizard and came up empty. Any help?
Thanks

Need an Inverter

I replaced the Norcold 1200 with a KitchenAid two door and couldn't be happier. We needed a 2 door because the electrical distribution panel is under the refer, and DW would have had a problem reaching the upper shelves on a French Door. Our house 3000W pure sine wave inverter handles the load just fine, but when it is on, I also end up powering a lot of overhead I don't want or need when we boondock for weeks at a time. I want to put in a separate, dedicated inverter for the refrig. The power use on the KitchenAid is 6.7A max. Has anyone put in a separate inverter? What brand and size did you use? I'm looking at a Cotek SK 2000W. I don't need a charger, or a load switching one, just the basic inverter. Comments from real experience, please. I've gotten lots of OPINIONS, that aren't even worth looking at.
Thanks,
John

RE: Canyon Lake, AZ

We drive by the place every winter when we stay at Tortilla Flat. Looks like a good place to stay and with electric hookups a good idea in July. The road up is narrow and turning, but we do it with a 40' Class A pulling a toad, so easily do-able. The 2 bridges are one way traffic only, so just wait your turn. Take your time and watch the rocks on the right side of the road. When we have 4-5 behind us we pull over at a wide spot to let them pass. A HUGE lake to boat on, but I don't know what's available in July. Have fun, and enjoy an Ice Cream at Tortilla Flat.

RE: Water filters - which do you prefer?

Sorry, but I'm just not on the "filter" band wagon. We had 55,000 miles on the last class A and 65,000 on the bus and I removed the filters on both. When we need to fill up with water, I take a glass at the spigot and look, smell, and taste. If it's not to my satisfaction, I don't fill and try elsewhere. If it passes my three tests, I fill. Has worked for years and I have good flow and pressure, and have never had to dump a tank of water. By the way, we don't sanitize, and we don't winterize (we snowbird). We also have never added anything to our black tank either. Never had an odor or other problem.

RE: Ladder vs. window awning

Our Allegro Bus has a ladder that only comes down part way, and then a second section hooks to the lowest step. This allows us to fully open the engine compartment access door. The lower part of the ladder is kept in the basement.
Take a good look at some Class A's and see if that approach might work. You'll probably have to get it custom made, but if you need it, you need it.
Good luck.

RE: Command Hooks

I just followed Installation Instructions and have had zero problems.
Used the Command Strips to hang pictures with frames thru out our 5'vr.
We FT and travel weekly....5yrs. and nothing has come loose. We have some large/heavy pictures.Step one is the most important one. Wash the area thoroughly with alcohol. We're using them all over the RV and have NEVER had one come down. They support everything from my glasses when I'm in the shower to a magnetic knife rack with 4 Trident knives and a fork in the kitchen. They come off as easy as they go on and leave NO residue.

RE: Screw hole repair ideas

All above are good solutions, some more durable than others. I'd oversize drill the holes and ream them with a bit of back slope so the part of the hole closer to the screw head is smaller than the bottom of the hole. Then fill with epoxy like JB Weld. Drill the new holes and tap to machine threads. When installing the machine screws, just a small drop of anti-seize will keep the epoxy plug from twisting if the screw grabs on the JB Weld.

RE: Air brakes for Toads

Been using the SMI Air Force One for 5 years and wouldn't use anything else. The unit is just about bullet proof. This fall the actuator pull cable broke. I contacted them, sent them the cylinder and they replaced the cable. Total cost including shipping was about $30 and I had it back in 10 days. When we sold the Colorado, I put the same system on a 2011 Chevy Silverado and have over 2000 miles on it now. Also moved the coach part of the system from my old Diesel Bounder to the Allegro Bus in a campground in Tucson 4 years ago. Super product, super company, and super service. Also the only system on the market that fully meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. As a licensed Safety Engineer, this is a big deal to me. By the way, I installed the unit the first time in a campground in Valdez, Alaska after a Blue Ox Apollo died for the 4th time.

RE: Best Kentucky distillery

We really enjoyed Jack Daniels. Didn't think too much of Jim Beam as you couldn't see the processes, inside the aging sheds or bottling area. All drank well, though.

RE: Phaeton broken down in Tifton Georgia

When I had a 2005 Cat C7 We had a similar problem. Turned out to be a HEUI pump. About a one day repair, but as I recall it was around $2000. Mine was still under warranty. As soon as I got the rig to Freightliner, they were able to diagnose the problem with their laptop hookup to the engine. We were towed about 90 mi from the Pecos to Midland/Odessa, TX area. Definitely would not run.

RE: Squatting at the Whitehorse Wal-Mart - year round!

Used to be a bunch of these guys in the Anchorage WalMart too, until they finally cleaned house. Now no one is allowed to overnight, let alone homestead. A few stupid and lazy spoil it for the many. Don't get me wrong, I stop at an occasional WalMart for a night, but we ask first, ALWAYS, and park where they ask us to. We're the guest in their home and act accordingly.

RE: Bridge Clearance

As an old survey party chief, I'd use caution about any printed or posted or GPS heights. Let me give you an example: A road is scheduled for topping with 4" or more of new blacktop, which the contractor lays down. Any bets he got the 4" right under the bridge? When the job's done (5 miles, 10 miles, 2 days, 2 weeks or longer) the state or municipality is notified and tells the survey team to go out and measure the result. 1 day to 2 weeks may elapse until they get out there, all the while the road's being used. After measuring, a report is generated to the "boss" and this generates a work order to the sign shop. The new signs are made IN ORDER with all the other signs they have work orders for. Then the new signs are made (budget permitting) and they are sent to the road crews for installation. Another 2 weeks+- if you're lucky, and the signs are put up. Of course the publication of the result in a road atlas, or list somewhere may be another month to a year or more. Total time, 6 months to 18 months if you are lucky. Bottom line, if you're down to half a foot or so, go around, stop and check, or proceed with a spotter. To do otherwise is tempting fate. By the way, I-95 southbound through the Carolinas has some bridges in the 13'6" range. Anybody wanna bet?? Think about it.

RE: Test for 2010 Alaska

Neat place, huh? We've been up 5 times in the last 6 years. Once in the winter to see the Iditerod. If you have any thoughts about ever going to Alaska, go NOW. The place is definitely unique and wonderful. We'll be going again and again until we cannot go at any place at all.

RE: How do you change signature?

One other minor thing. If you don't fill out a TON of personal info first, you won't be able to change anything. Why the forum managers want all this strictly personal stuff, I don't know. YES, they say it won't be released under any but the most dire circumstances (dire circumstances on this forum??? Yeah, right.). If that's the case why do they need it? Whatever, but they won't get it from me, so the old, non-current info is what you see. If they want to get ugly about it, I'm out of here.
Perhaps this is a reason the number of posts is down so low compared with the past? I sure wouldn't join if I had to fill in all that info first. Yeah, I'm not sharing my life on Twitter or Facebook either. I'm on this forum to share info with others who need help and to pick up an occasional tip or great idea, not support some data miner.

RE: what size RV garage/storage do you use ?

I built a 24X40 pole building with 14' to the bottom of the roof trusses. I also included a 12' wide door. My wife told me that the building was too small and I didn't listen. It is too small and I will never hear the end of it.Yep. Mine is 42x96 with 24wide by 14high doors. I needed it to be 46' or so for a 43' RV but I'll get along.

RE: Wiper Arm

Take a good close look at your wiper arm and the driver shaft to see EXACTLY what's causing your problem. Since the wiper arm is castr pot metal, that's what usually strips out. THe shaft is steel and is usually OK. I had this happen a couple of years ago in Florida during a gully washer, and found that I could really torque down on the arm nut, it would work fine on normal speed. I stopped every couple of hours or so and tightened it again, and found that it actually cut new knurled groves in the arm. I ordered a new arm when I got home 3 months later and have been driving around with it in the basement ever since. I do check that the arms are TIGHT every few months or so. And, yes, I'm using the wipers on HIGH whenever I need to.
Just over the hill in Tucson you'll find a large number of RV dealers and a Camping World that may have the arm you need. Besides, you can make it a stop when you visit the Pima Air Museum and the Davis-Monthan AFB bone yard. A great day out.

RE: Co-Pilot Live 8

The Co-Pilot software ask periodically if you want to send in your tracks to be added to up date future releases of Co-Pilot. I don't think your going to see any of the other Gps people except S&T and maybe Delorme with the lap top version offered. No matter how good they are its just like the paper maps, they are two to five years behind in up dating etc.Don't count on the info being sent back making a bit of difference. I submitted this stuff for years, as well as emails back to CoPilot, and when I quit using the program, they still showed Valdez, Alaska somewhere in Prince William Sound. Garbage in, NOTHING out.
