RE: Over night stops

When we're looking to make time we stay at WM, truck stops, wide spots and wherever. For our 3 trips from DE to AK we pay at one stop on the way up and one on the way down, an 11,000+ mile trip. It's not a money thing, it's a time and convenience thing. We do the same when snowbirding in AZ. Try it and see how you like it, then decide.

RE: Boondocking - Are we ready????

It sounds like you've done a lot of deep thinking and planning on this and no doubt it will serve you well. As Markie Mark pointed out, this is a great start and you'll find a number of things to change and improve as you do it. We boondock extensively in both cold and warm climates, Alaska to Florida, and are still learning. The LED's will serve you well. After we did it, I thought our electrical panel was broken because we used so little power. Some things to consider. When the temps are cool we use Coleman Lanterns for internal light as the heat they produce cuts down on using the rig heater. Also, close rig internal doors to isolate the area you are occupying to save the heat that bodies generate. Finally, consider simple outside window awnings to keep sun out when dealing with higher temps. Use your vents and fans to control internal humidity. Moisture on the windows will be your indicator.
Good luck with your new endeavor.

RE: Using credit cards in Canada

I have not stayed in an Alberta Provincial park for some time. These parks have been privatized and the contract operators rely on an honour system, with checks regularly. They only take cash as there is no permanent management presence in the park. It would not be a big surprise if this system has also been adopted elsewhere.
VicWe've run into the same issue in BC along the Yellowhead Highway.

RE: Are there any really nice RV parks in Tulsa

I don't know how close you want to be to Tulsa, but Keystone Lake State Park is about 13 miles west of Tulsa. Full hookups and a very attractive place. We stayed there in January 2008 and would definitely go back.

RE: More Mods!! Just picked out new Corian for kitchen counter

Too bad about that repair. We have Avonite counter tops in the Tiffin. Just about the same as Corian. Before we bought the Bus, DW wanted a 3 burner stove with oven rather than the 2 burner with a dishwasher. When the new counter top was shipped in from Tiffin, it had a break similar to yours. I saw it before it was repaired and examined it top and bottom after the repair. I COULD NOT find any evidence of the crack, top or bottom, even though I knew where to look for it. We've got 2 1/2 years and 42,000 miles on it and still cannot find any evidence of the crack. These things can be repaired if you find the right technician.
By the way, even though we try to be extra careful, this type top does pick up scratches fairly easily. They are fairly easy to polish out, but if I had a choice next time, I'd definitely put granite in instead.
Good luck with your Corian.

RE: Installing Longer Struts Under Queen Bed

It's a fairly simple job to reposition your present strut to give you a larger access. Generally, you will be placing BOTH attachment points closer to the hinge end. If you need specific info this is a good site McMaster-Carr

Someone on another post indicated that the Pink and Silver runs in Valdez are running late this year. Hyder may be the same too.

RE: Basement door lock pins

I had an 05 Diesel Bounder that the pins were breaking on as well. I got a square steel bar at the hardware store and made new pins out of that. I had to drill out a few pop rivets to disassemble the latch, but after doing 3 or 4 I could make one in a camp ground in about an hour. Another half hour to remove and install, and I never had one of the new ones break.

RE: kitchen faucet installation????

If the faucet you're looking at has the pull out feature, there is a fitting on the bottom of the faucet where the braided hose connects. On my Tiffin, the fixtures all use standard kitchen and bath sizes. Yours may be different. I'd suggest you measure a standard one in the hardware store, and go under your sink and measure yours.

RE: Spartan vs Freightliner Chassis?

When we were shopping I drove the Allegro Bus in the Tiffin, Freightliner and Spartan chassis. The Freightliner was stiffer, had less corner dive in hard lane changes at high and low speed, and less dive on hard braking. Based on these characteristics I picked the Freightliner. Others choose a softer ride over handling and might pick differently. Drive both if you can and then decide.

RE: Camping on Elmendorf AFB, Alaska

You're just talking about fine tuning from here on. Your passengers look like they're enjoying the stay. Best of luck with the rig.
We've been up 3 times in the last 4 years and will go again twice in 2011. Missed this year and it's killing me. We always try to spend a few days at Elmendorf. Their FAMCAMP is great. I spent my whole career trying for an Alaskan assignment, and the best I ever got was a few hours on the ground then off again. Probably a good thing, or my kids would have all grown up in AK. Once up there, I NEVER would have left. I'll be thinking about you when the Silvers begin to run in Valdez next month.

RE: HWY 2

It's a great road. We take it from Mackinac MI to Shelby each time we go and return from Alaska. They're working on making it 4 lanes for the whole length, but it'll take some years yet.

RE: Got foggy headlights?

Mother's Wax Powerball 4Lights! My daughters 1997 Ford Escorts lights were beyond "foggy", now they're crystal clear! At $25 and up these guys are ridiculous. The NuFinish polish is a much better value and works fine, as does any fine polish.

RE: Disaster

You can go on the Blue Ox web site and see and read all the instructions for any car and associated base plate. My experience is that it's quite simple as long as you follow their directions. I put a base plate on the Colorado and it took less than a morning. Wiring was another 2 hours or so using their kit. It sounds like you are dealing with the Marx Brothers.

RE: Propane filling...

Instead of trying to fill the RV tank, how about just plumbing a line to run from the BBQ tank to the rig system. An Extend-A-Stay or the equivalent is not at all hard to install, and the BBQ tanks can be filled in town any number of times. There are a few issues regarding flow limiters in spuds and in some tank valves but they are easily handled.

RE: Cancelled my Reservation when I found out about a 10 yr rule

Their park, their rules. My rig, my money. Another park on the DO NOT CONSIDER list. You won't find me in a place like that. I fully support the OP on this one, regardless of how old or what the rig looks like. Some people think their #$%@ doesn't smell at all because they can cover it in money.

RE: RV parks in and around Prince Rupert, BC ??

Check with the ferry folks if you're OK boondocking. Depending on what's going out and what's coming in, they have been known to let folks spend the night on their property.
