RE: So, you bought a used 6.0 PSD...

Mine runs great got it at 17k been on the PSD forums for over 15 years got a Oasis Report if you know what to do they are a great running truck. They are not grocery getters they need to work fuel mpg not bad 18.4 solo and 9 pulling run Ford cetane boost in the fuel on every fillup add a coolant filter ditch the Ford Gold coolant then do a coolant flush add CAT EC-1 Rated ELC coolant get a good set of gauges like the Edge Insight CTS with pyro and a fuel pressure gauge, fuel pressure under 45lbs at WOT kills injectors.

RE: Ford 6.7 debacle just gets crazier

Thanks for posting Rick have been reading here and on the PSD forums it sucks that Ford can't be a big boy and say we have a problem. The 6.4 & 6.7's Fords warranty denials are making my 6.0 look really good, and thanks for the help with mine, runs great.

RE: 06 Ford- repair plan-do I need

Edge Insight will not monitor fuel pressure on the 6.0 engine. That capability was not added to the OBII port until the 6.4 engine.
Regards
Rick
Grasshopper here, the new Edge Insight CTS will monitor fuel pressure but you are right NOT through the OBDII port still has to come from the test port.
If you get the Edge Insight CTS a great tool, get the expandable probe so if you want to add more to it down the line plus you can run 8 things at one time.

Things you can add down the line like turbo timer & back up Monitor & fuel pressure

RE: 06 Ford- repair plan-do I need

My 6.0 has been out of warranty just a few weeks shy of two years now. Every time I get an extended warranty thing in the mail I toss it in the trash.
Even though I never had any trouble, I replaced the Ford Gold with CAT EC-1, added a coolant filter, and did the upgraded fuel pressure spring.
Did you verify low fuel pressure before you changed out the spring? Too much fuel pressure on a 6.0 is as bad as too little.
Regards
I didn't verify it. I just installed the updated spring from Ford that's supposed to correct the low fuel pressure issue. I don't think the updated spring will cause high fuel pressure but please correct me if I'm wrong.
One would hope that a "Ford" supplied part would not cause a problem...but I would be cautious. The problem with just arbitrarily changing the pop off valve pressure, which is the purpose of that spring, is that increasing the PSI to above 75 pounds raises havoc with the o rings that seal the injector within the injector well(cavity). Blow an o ring, flood the cylinder with unmetered fuel and you have the recipe for a hydrolock...not good...
This is why I recommend a Fuel Pressure Gauge.
Regards
Rick is right over 75lbs at idle and under 45lbs at WOT kills injectors mine with 17K on it had 44lbs at WOT and 50lbs at idle did the fuel reg kit now 62lbs idle and 58lbs at WOT if you don't know your fuel pressure you are taking a chance your pressure is where it should be, you need to know your pressure at idle and WOT when pulling a 5er or TT as you know you are in WOT a lot plus you can tell if you are having filter problems or pump problems at 300$X8=$2400 just for injectors i would like to know.
This is what i got for the fuel pressure gauge, it goes into the test port.

RE: 06 Ford- repair plan-do I need

Thanks Rick,if you do it right there is nothing wrong with the 6.0 in my book, add a coolant filter to remove the casting sand that is a must. The 6.0 is known to blow head gaskets. This is why it happens. The Ford Gold coolant contains silicates. The silicates are not able to handle high EGT's generated by a good load or relatively high boost when run through the EGR cooler. They break down into a jell like sludge and fall out of suspension. This crud gets caught up in the tiny coolant passageways of the oil cooler. As the cooler clogs up it restricts coolant flow to the egr cooler. Now the egr cooler doesn't have enough coolant to carry off the heat generated by high EGT's. The limited amount of coolant in the egr cooler flash boils causing high pressure in the cooling system and the truck pukes coolant from the degas bottle due to the pressure. (it has to go somewhere)
Your uninformed Powerstroke owner is not monitoring his coolant temps and oil temps so he doesn't know whats going on and he keeps driving it this way. The problem get worse, the pressure causes the egr cooler to rupture. Now the egr cooler is leaking coolant into the intake manifold which then runs into the cylinders. Again the high combustion temps cause the coolant to vaporize. This causes unacceptably high cylinder pressure, the TTY head bolts stretch due to the additional pressure and there go your head gaskets.
Ok now you know the problem. Here's the cure. Get a good engine monitoring solution like the Edge Insight CTS plus it is a great tool so that you can monitor your ECT and EOT and a total of 8 PIDS at one time. If those temps get more than 15* apart at normal cruising when at normal operating temperature your oil cooler is clogging up. Rebuild it now to prevent all that down stream damage from occurring. Flush that Ford Gold coolant cxxp out of your engine with distilled water then add 1/2 gallon of Restore and distilled water run 1hr drain and flush 5 or 6 times or untill clean. This is made specifically to clean out that silicate residue. Now if you feel lucky do the Restore+ flush this removers the mineral build up this is where the oil cooler really can get plugged up flush till clean. Now refill it with a silicate free Cat EC-1 rated ELC coolant and aat this time you need to install a new t/stat 3C3Z-8575-AA Thermostat with housing and o-ring. This removes the silicates that clog the oil cooler from the equation. If you live in an area where you don't have smog inspections delete the egr system. If you can't delete it replace the egr cooler with the cooler manufactured by Bulletproof Diesel. This is vastly superior to the Ford oem egr cooler and it will not fail on you. If you find that you need to replace head gaskets replace the TTY head bolts with ARP studs and use Ford head gaskets. If you have to replace the egr cooler always replace the oil cooler. That is the source of the problem.
When i did mine i had 28k on it, i used 48 gallons of distilled water 1/2 gallon Restore 1/2 gallon Restore+ new t/stat 3 1/2 gallons Delo ELC CAT EC-1 Rated coolant and 12.5hrs of my time but my deltas a 4-6deg ECT 192-194* EOT 198-200* solo pulling my 5er add 10deg to both and the highest that i have see is ECT 218* EOT 228* pulling a 6-7% grade 6mi long and the fan sounds like a jet plane in 95deg weather just remember thay are not grocery getters they need to work and max boost on a stock motor 28lbs and add cetane boost to the fuel to keep the egr valve and turbo clean and working, hope this helps. Thanks Rick for your help on mine in the past.

RE: 06 Ford- repair plan-do I need

The 6.0 is a good running motor if you do the right things and keep them serviced and that is not at some jeffy-lube and use Ford or Racor filter all around and run a good 5w40 Syn oil and 5k max on the oil because of the shear of the oil by the injectors. You need to ditch the Ford Gold coolant install a coolant filter, fuel pressure gauge 99% of the 6.0 running around are under 45lbs at WOT kills injectors and a good set of gauges the ones in the dash look good and just take up space and need to keep good batteries in it because low or weak batteries will kill the FICM at a cost of about $1100 to $1400 or have yours fixed for about $300

RE: ford diesel smoking when cold?

As stated could be a bad egr cooler, are you low on coolant the new Full cold mark is the Add mark park down hill some when it is cold pull the egr valve and if it damp or wet cooler bad and if it is you will need to change the oil cooler the cause of the egr cooler going bad along with the casting sand and the Ford Gold junk coolant if it is bad i would fix the cooler first do a flush with Restore then Restore+ then replace the oil cooler go with a CAT EC-1 Rated coolant and install a coolant filter. These boys will show you how to pull the egr valve.

RE: Charging a twin battery 2008 F350

Congrads on the new truck you will like it. Before you store it for the winter go to Ford and get the Ford cetane boost with Anti-Gel and add as required http://k-mansparts.com/items/motorcraft-filters-/fluids/motorcraft-diesel-anti-gel-and-performance-improver-pm-23-a-pm23a-detail.htm then when summer comes add the reg. boost http://k-mansparts.com/items/motorcraft-filters-/fluids/motorcraft-diesel-Cetane-Booster-and-performance-improver-pm-22-a-mcpm22a-detail.htm this is a must or you could get into trouble or go to Walmart and get Diesel Klean you need to read this if you have not-- http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/25488053.cfm
Now to your batteries yes a battery tender plus will work i hard wired mine to the passenger side battery it come with 2 different end one hard wired one clips just plug it in for the winter i just set it under the hood and close it then plug it in.

Hope this helps.

RE: 06 F350 6.0 accessories

The banks tuner does make good power but it may also kill your trans plus get ready for ARP studs because they are coming with big power as stated the SCT with custom tunes is a better tuner because they bring the trans into play. Keep an eye on the ECT-EOT max 15deg set by Ford doing 60mph flat ground after 3-4min solo if more than 15deg i think 10degs your oil cooler is plugged with casting sand and silicate drop out from the Ford Gold junk coolant. Get a fuel pressure gauge under 45lbs at WOT you are killing your injectors. I run an oil by-pass system with Syn oil because the stock Ford filter cleans to 20 microns the by-pass cleans down to 2 microns but you still have to change at 5K because of the shear of the oil by the injectors. A coolant filter is a must to remove the casting sand and all the junk in the cooling system.
I installed the Roll-N-Lock bed cover works great looks good when not pulling everything is dry and when pulling i can pull it 1/4 of the way and lock it to keep some thing dry.
