RE: Do you use cell phones while backing into campsite?

My DW doesn't guide me, she strictly ensures I don't hit something with the trailer.
I scout the site out and make sure I'm aware of where I want the trailer and what obstacles are around.

RE: Anyone taken Hwy 22 from Cochrane to Entwhistle (PH16)??

Traffic is the problem on 22. But I only travel that road regularly for work, so what do I know.
I agree scenery is better on 22 than 2 , but 93 is WAY better than both, in regards to scenery and traffic.

+1, I'd rather either hit the QE2 or do the icefields hwy.
22 can be dangerous as it's 2 lane undivided

RE: 4wd for towing stability?

My mileage when driving in the winter with 4auto drops dramatically compared to 2wd in the winter. I'd hate to see your MPG towing in 4auto.
Towing in winter, I'd consider using 4auto, But even then, driving to conditions is best.

RE: Ok here we go

RV.net is is a poor website to find out about "legal" weight issues. There are many LTL type haulers websites for finding out what legal weight issues are and it sure isn't what some on this web push as being legal. Weight threads on RV.net are a good sourse of jokes.
Anyhow the 1500HD is not your typical std duty 1/2 ton truck.
It comes with a 8600 GVWR/6000 lb RAWR which is a 14 bolt corporate 9.5" gear/E tires and wheels/6.0 engine with the 4L80 tranny. For all facts and purposes its the old std duty 2500 truck of years past.
The 1500HD has a 4500 lb front axle and 4500 lb front suspension.
The 1500HD has a 6000 lb rear axle and rear suspension/brakes/etc.
The 1500HD will have a rear axle payload of around 3500 lbs depending on actual scaled weights and how the owners has his truck loaded.
MMarty, the numbers your using like 7869 or 1073 pin are manufacture dry weight numbers. Im guessing the trailer after you load it will be around 9000-9500 lbs and a wet pin weight of around 1800 lbs.
The truck will carry the 5ers pin weight with no issues. The 6.0 smallblock will pull that kind of weight although nothing like the Cummins.
IMO the 8.1 GM or the V-10 Ford in a 2500 would be a better choice from a performance standpoint. Both those engines are towing beasts.
You sure don't need a dually for that size trailer.
+1...
If you already owned the 1500hd, it would tow your 5er safe & legally according to the manufacturers (as long as you didnt load it down), but since you are looking to purchase, get something bigger. Or keep the cummins.. Although I can see why you want to sell it, man those things are ugly..:B

Man there's some cool looking rigs elsewhere..
I still think a 1/2 ton diesel would blow away anything on the market (similar to what the ecoboost is doing).

RE: Unhook or not

The only time I don't unhitch, is If I arrive late (10-11pm) and/or we are staying at a walmart. BUT, with that being said, I usually spend 3-4 minutes checking out the hitch first thing in the morning, checking for tampering. So does it save anything nope, just means I'm not as noisy when I arrive.
My routine takes 15 mins from backing in, to unfolding lawnchair & cracking beer.
Sounds like you need to practice hitching/unhitching more (and get the ball thing figured out).

RE: 1/2 tons and 5th wheels. Trailer Life magazine article.

ok.. wth.. Site keeps crashing.. had a nice big response for ya..
Dstiener.
Because the CofG is still infront of the tires, but the 5ers is alot farther forward. One of the racecar trailers I tow with is perfectly balanced (we don't use the tongue jack unless there's a car on the trailer), and it wanders all over the road when empty. I can't imagine what a perfectly balanced TT would tow like. Even look in your sig, where are the axles in relation to the overall length of the 5er? Now compare that to a TT. axles are alot farther back.

qualifications.. lol. Just because you towed (bigrig) for 50yrs (which I respect you for) doesn't mean you know anything about designing a trailer, sure if I have questions about towing a trailer, I might ask you.
And what,
You built a trailer. Congrats.. So did I. what's your point. But what do I know, I've only spent years designing (& engineering) mobile gas compression units. Sigh.
But lets not turn this into a swinging contest. Oh wait, you already did that.

RE: 1/2 tons and 5th wheels. Trailer Life magazine article.

Go have another look at where the center of gravity is of a 5er and compare it to a TT. Most 5er's have a CofG ~5-6ft in front of the (trailer) axles. Not the case with a TT. This is part of the reason a 5er & gooseneck are (allegedly) more stable while towing (ie heavier tongue weight). But you probably didn't know that.
Oh yeah, and I'm talking length from the pin, not from the rear TV bumper.

RE: 1/2 tons and 5th wheels. Trailer Life magazine article.

Sorry, I wasn't expecting anyone to bite anything. I just stated an opinion based on 50+ years experience towing both semi trailers, gooseneck, and drawbar. There are hundreds of thousands of trailers being safely pulled with drawbar hitches without WDH or sway bars and possibly millions of semi's and other 5th wheels/goosenecks without WDH or sway bars and they are stable. To have to rely on WDH or sway bars is an indication something may be wrong so bandaids are used instead of fixing the problem.
Except there's one important thing you're missing...
Location of axles on a TT vs a gooseneck, reg trailer, semi, etc. (you'd think someone with "years" experience would notice this). almost ALL TT have axles that are close to or in the center of the trailer (I hope you understand what this does to the stability of a trailer...).
THIS...is the reason we need sway control & WDH.
BUT what do I know I've only been towing (a TT) for 10 years.

RE: Time to upgrade my Droid phone. Any recommendations?

Samsung Galaxy Nexus... (the pure google experience...lol)
Why get something that isn't optimized specifically (by google) for ICS?
Quad core android phones are a waste until the next OS (jellybean), ICS was not built for quad core, and will not utilize the quad cores' potential.

RE: Ipad or Android Tablet?

Interestingly enough, I'm a big android fan, BUT I really enjoy using our Ipad2. I've really had no issues with it, and since I understand it's limitations, it's pretty good.
Funny thing is, my wife is a huge iFan and absolutely loves her iphone 4, now that we've had an ipad2 since christmas, and she is not tech savy (ie.understand the limitations), she gets frustrated because she is searching for stuff on the internet (using the ipad2), and I swear it's at least once/day that she says "WTF, why doesn't this thing display (insert whatever here) properly, man I hate this ipad, pass the laptop.
SO guess what our next tablet will be. More than likely Android based.

RE: Towing Borrowed (notrented) TT across the border

Notarized consent from the registered owner including time frame and make, model and vin of the TT, plus the registration certificate, signed by the registered owner. You can get a replacement registration certificate at any license shop for a fee of about $25 if I recall corectly.
+add the contact info (phone number) for the owner (and make sure he will be available around the time you plan on crossing).
Vic46 had some good advise, but I have crossed the border at least twice a year since 2007 with my trailer and have yet to be asked if I own it or to see the ownership on it.
That's because your trailer licence plate owner matched the truck licence plate owner.
you are not allowed to bring any borrowed or rented vehicle across the boarder. If found out you will be asked to stay in the country the trailer to borrowed from or if the police catch you will be escorted to the nearest boarder crossing.
The easiest and right way to do this is have the person "sell" you the trailer for a 1.00 and have the registration put in your name - then "resell" it back once you return home
Better be safe then sorry - not worth the worry better to have the reg in your name>.
Completely WRONG... Notorized letter is ALL you need. DO NOT buy/sell it, complete waste of time & energy. But what do I know, I've only been stopped at the border for this exact thing. Lucky enough my dad (who owned the truck) was in the motorhome behind us. So they let us through, but we went and got a notorized letter for the trip back, based on the recommendation of the Border agent. We were not asked coming back. So I would assume they had some record of the situation on file.

RE: Cool little GPS tracking device for vehicles

I've got one of those OBD2 Bluetooth scanners, pretty much the same size as this thing, and it gets kicked/bumped anytime I get into and out of the car. so depending on the location of the port.
I'd much rather have something hardwired in. but I would only use it for stolen car scenario.

RE: Dash Cams ( Crash Cameras)

I had thought about one that streams to my phone, but not sure how that would work while my phone is using it's BT connection to the vehicle. Not to mention battery life.
I bought this one.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/160713174147?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_7691wt_1001
And a 16GB card, and will be hardwiring it into acc power, so it will turn on when truck turns on. Basically set it and forget it (until something happens), and it will overwrite the oldest footage.
I've used it for a couple months now, and it's great. Oh yeah, and it's night vision is pretty decent also.

I've got the 1334-5034B ones, and they are great. SOO much better than the old regular mirrors w/extensions. There is a bit of shaking but nothing that is vomit inducing.

RE: 1500 hd real world towing

kw/00 wrote:
I have one of those 1500HD trucks...aka standard 2500..all the way around. .
Call it a 3/4 ton if you want, but it was marketed as "A heavy 1/2" for whatever reason and you will not find any "official" literature calling it a 3/4 ton.
There may be a small problem with what the OP is trying to PULL with a 3.73 axle, but the bigger issue is how much he is asking the truck to CARRY.
But if you don't believe in Manufacturer's ratings I guess it doesn't matter!
Don't listen to these guys... Funny that the 1500HD has more payload capacity than his truck and he's pulling a heavy 5er..lol..
Tongue weight is NOT an issue at all.. the 1500hd has close to 3000lbs avail carrying capacity.
You say toyhauler. What are you planning on putting in the toyhauler? (IE. atv?bikes?motorcycles?).
IMHO, As long as you watch what you load into the trailer, you will be good. My truck has no problem hauling my trailer (~7000lbs ready to go).
