RE: Motel?

When we travel with our B, we stay in a motel about once a week.....taking a nice long hot shower, watching a bigger TV, sleeping in a big bed, and eating out are kind of nice to do when on a trip. We especially do this if the weather is crummy outside, as the B isn't the place to spend long hours sitting in a campground when it's raining days on end. The good breakfast at the motel is kind of a nice break from preparing a meal also. Stay at the motel, for $20 more it's a no-brainer, you spend more on gas than that!

RE: Destinations for Short Trips Out of Seattle Area?

Nice state park just north of East Wenatchee on US2, near Orondo. Full hookups and excellent sites. The city park in Chelan is a good place to stay also, but a little more crowded. Several SP's on Whidbey Island, but you have to drive thru Seattle to get to them, and the ferry is kind of expensive for RV's too.

RE: Cooler or travel with fridge on?

We travel with our fridge on 12v, and when we get to the CG switch over to propane or 120v if we have electric hookups. While traveling, I might switch from 12v to propane if we're going to be parked for a long time (several hours) in the hot sun so as not to run the battery down while parked. Driving with it on 12v, I don't have to worry when I fuel up at gas stations.

RE: Tips on trip thru Northwest

Since Lewiston ID is on your schedule, plan to drive towards MT from Lewwiston using US 12; go east to MT, lots of good USFS CG's along that route and the Lochsa River is something to enjoy plus the trees, wildlife, etc. After you reach MT at the intersection of US 93 with US 12, you can go south or drive up to Missoula and then catch I-90 to get you closer to Yellowstone. Oregon coast will be quite busy during the summer, but it is worth seeing if you've never been there, the OR SP's are some of the best you'll find anywhere!

RE: Green River, UT to Spanish Fork, UT

We just returned from a 6,000 mile trip that included driving through Utah on the way back home. Have driven the Green River-Price-Spanish Fork route many times over the years and as others have said it's a good route. However, this time we decided to stay on I-70 and go west to Salina, then take US 50 north up to join with I-15. What a treat! Not far west of Green River you will see some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere, and it continues for at least 50 miles. The highway is in great shape, the curves are very gradual and grades are easy on your rig. If you've never been on this road, I'd highly recommend it, be prepared to stop at the viewpoints and take pictures!

RE: I figured out the truth today.

When you encounter a vehicle that looks bad and obviously hasn't been taken care of, then it makes one wonder about oil changes, how it was driven, and other things that aren't quite so apparent. I'd steer clear of this Roadtrek, too bad you went to the trouble and expense in doing your search.

I bought Toyo Open Country tires for our 2001 PW Excel a couple years ago too, they are an excellent tire and worth the extra cost.

RE: Don't hike Glacier National Park ?

While you're on US 2 on the south border of the park, stop at Essex where the BNSF trains switch engines after the long climb up to the pass. An excellent cafe there and the huckleberry pie is worth a try! Also stop at Marias Pass and marvel at the monument and history there.

RE: US 212 thru Montana

US 212 is a good highway, and will save you lots of time; no problem with fuel. As daireemt noted above, watch for deer at night, and also obey the speed limts on tribal lands. Whenever we travel to western SD we take this highway.

Tomorrow (Saturday) you should have no problem taking I-5 all the way south, especially if you get to the Seattle area from Bellingham by 10 o'clock or so.

RE: Friend needs a place to park RV near Glendive MT asap

My hats off to those folks who are trying to find work and are willing to tough the winter out in an RV. They aren't sitting around complaining about no jobs and waiting for something better to show up that's more to their liking. Good to see some of the old pioneer spirit is still alive and a person is wanting to put up with conditions that aren't so great so that they aren't a drag on society. Sure the winters in ND and MT aren't the most pleasant, but it sure beats unemployment

RE: towing travel trailer/pop up with class b

The 10,000 lb tow rating sounds real high, usually after you deduct the dry curb weight of the vehicle and add in the passengers and stuff you'll be carrying, there's not much weight allowance left to safely tow (and stop in emergency situations). Need to be careful that you don't damage the transmission and other mechanicals.

RE: Senior woman with 4 small dogs hoping to drive across Canada

Before you embark on such a long journey, may I suggest that you take a trip up to the Banff area or somewhere and return home via a different route. Purpose of this short trip would be to get the bugs out and determine if you and the pups are ready for a much longer adventure. Sounds like 400 km per day for your trip to the Maritimes would be about right for you and the dogs; lets you drive leisurly and get to a campsite in mid-afternoon and rest and then get supper. I'm not familiar with VW vehicles but they are certainly still popular in Canada and if you ever needed help, it shouldn't be too far away. In addition to the usual camping gear, I'd take a case of bottled water and extra propane bottles if you're using a Coleman camping stove to cook with. Have a good trip, don't forget the binoculars so you can spot mountain goats, etc.

RE: Highway 12 from Missoula,MT to Lewiston, ID.

Don't think it's too great an idea to double tow on the Lewis & Clark Highway, at least the section between Kooskia ID and Lolo MT. This is a long piece of road that is curvy and doesn't have many passing zones for vehicles following you to safely pass. Be prepared to use the turnouts along the road so traffic doesn't back up behind you too much. As ArcticDodge noted, this is a beautiful road to drive and there are many interesting sights, just take your time if you do decide to drive it! Have driven that highway many times over the past fifty years, but never towing anything.

RE: Rapid City, SD what to see, where to stay

All of the above responses list excellent places to visit and enjoy; I'll add one more: the geology and paleontology museum at the School of Mines in Rapid City. The displays of minerals and all the dinosaur fossils including the big brontosaurus are world-class for people of all ages to enjoy. Used to be free, there may be a minimal charge nowadays.

RE: Insurance

Yes, that is what we do with our RV, carry comp when not in use and also make sure it's protected for theft, fire, etc and any hazard that might occur while not being used.
