RE: Seattle I-5 N to S or 405

Tomorrow (Saturday) you should have no problem taking I-5 all the way south, especially if you get to the Seattle area from Bellingham by 10 o'clock or so.

RE: Friend needs a place to park RV near Glendive MT asap

My hats off to those folks who are trying to find work and are willing to tough the winter out in an RV. They aren't sitting around complaining about no jobs and waiting for something better to show up that's more to their liking. Good to see some of the old pioneer spirit is still alive and a person is wanting to put up with conditions that aren't so great so that they aren't a drag on society. Sure the winters in ND and MT aren't the most pleasant, but it sure beats unemployment

RE: towing travel trailer/pop up with class b

The 10,000 lb tow rating sounds real high, usually after you deduct the dry curb weight of the vehicle and add in the passengers and stuff you'll be carrying, there's not much weight allowance left to safely tow (and stop in emergency situations). Need to be careful that you don't damage the transmission and other mechanicals.

RE: Senior woman with 4 small dogs hoping to drive across Canada

Before you embark on such a long journey, may I suggest that you take a trip up to the Banff area or somewhere and return home via a different route. Purpose of this short trip would be to get the bugs out and determine if you and the pups are ready for a much longer adventure. Sounds like 400 km per day for your trip to the Maritimes would be about right for you and the dogs; lets you drive leisurly and get to a campsite in mid-afternoon and rest and then get supper. I'm not familiar with VW vehicles but they are certainly still popular in Canada and if you ever needed help, it shouldn't be too far away. In addition to the usual camping gear, I'd take a case of bottled water and extra propane bottles if you're using a Coleman camping stove to cook with. Have a good trip, don't forget the binoculars so you can spot mountain goats, etc.

RE: Highway 12 from Missoula,MT to Lewiston, ID.

Don't think it's too great an idea to double tow on the Lewis & Clark Highway, at least the section between Kooskia ID and Lolo MT. This is a long piece of road that is curvy and doesn't have many passing zones for vehicles following you to safely pass. Be prepared to use the turnouts along the road so traffic doesn't back up behind you too much. As ArcticDodge noted, this is a beautiful road to drive and there are many interesting sights, just take your time if you do decide to drive it! Have driven that highway many times over the past fifty years, but never towing anything.

RE: Regular TP vs. RV TP?

Use the TP that feels good, don't worry about other stuff!

RE: Rapid City, SD what to see, where to stay

All of the above responses list excellent places to visit and enjoy; I'll add one more: the geology and paleontology museum at the School of Mines in Rapid City. The displays of minerals and all the dinosaur fossils including the big brontosaurus are world-class for people of all ages to enjoy. Used to be free, there may be a minimal charge nowadays.

RE: Insurance

Yes, that is what we do with our RV, carry comp when not in use and also make sure it's protected for theft, fire, etc and any hazard that might occur while not being used.

RE: Roadtrek Mercedes oil recommendation

Not familiar with the MB V6, but perhaps one of the MB car dealers in your area can offer advice (the service techs, not the car sales people). I know that Shell's Rotella and Chevron' Delo are very fine oils and used by many guys with diesels in their tractors, big trucks, etc.

RE: Dangers in Organ Pipe National Monument?

Organ Pipe Cactus is a national monument, within the Department of the Interior. It is not a national forest administered by the Department of Agriculture. Lots of difference between national parks and monuments and the national forests; each serve different needs and are separate from each other. We were in Organ Pipe Cactus NM in the spring of 2010, it's a great place to visit. But you should check with the Park Service personnel to get their advice on hiking trails and other things to pay attention to in your travels.

RE: West of the Missisippi...your favorite?

It's hard to decide between the southwest and the Pacific Ocean; but since you're traveling in late summer, I'd go for the ocean since it will still be hot down in AZ, NM, UT and other places. That leads me to recommend Redwood NP in northern CA which will offer the ocean and the giant redwoods. On your way west go thru Glacier and the Cascades; then south along the coast, especially the state parks in OR until you get to CA. After the redwoods continue south along US 101 and then over to CA 1 until the central coast area; by then you'll be ready to head home and you can do the southwest stuff like Joshua Tree, Grand Canyon, and then who knows where? Have a good trip!

RE: Watch those tree limbs!

I agree with all who don't want all the trees in a park limbed to allow unhindered access and parking; though there should perhaps be a few spots that have no overhanging limbs (or are clear for 15+ feet vertically) for the bigger units. The trees are an important part of the camping experience and protect one from too much sun and also reduce noise from other campers a little bit. Parks shoud strive for a safe environment and where feasible remove dead limbs or trees that may fall during heavy storms. If it can't be done then those spots should be closed for camping and just left alone. I agree that large units or those driven by inexperienced handlers should probably be assigned to the more open spots to reduce chances of backing into/over something that may cause damage. I do not want to park in a parking lot though, we need trees for the benefits they provide: scenery, bird habitat, shade, etc.

RE: Southwest US in March and April

Try to include Joshua Tree NP in California and Organ Pipe and Saguaro NP's in Arizona to your travel schedule; and you will also need to visit the Sedona area for some fantastic viewing. So many places to see in our SW that I'd be tempted to just include CA, AZ, and NM to the list and skip UT and CO this time around; but you know how much time you'd like to spend. Have a good trip!

RE: Rt 200 Missoula, MT to Idaho Border

MT 200 and ID 200 are good highways, will take you from Missoula to Sandpoint. I prefer driving I-90 from Missoula west to St. Regis then follow the Clark Fork downstream to where it intersects with MT 200 near Plains. Follow 200 westward into Idaho and come to Sandpoint where you will join US 2 and US 95. Since you're heading west from there, I'd just stay on US 2 and go to Newport WA, then south to Spokane and pick up I-90 which you take to Seattle. If you want some more adventure, stay on US 2 rather than going on I-90 and go through the wheat country down to Wenatchee then over to Everett where you'll join up with I-5; not much traffic on this road and lots to see.

RE: Rear Door Window Won't Open in My RT?

Our 2001 PW Excel on the Dodge chassis also had the rear window latches shut with rivets; I just drilled them out and everything is fine. As others have noted, keep the window closed when driving or when running the generator (unless you have the extended generator exhaust pipe that directs exhaust away from the rear opening).

RE: Hearst Castle RV Parking

Another stop to make before you head to the campsite is to see the elephant seals on the beach in the same area as Hearst Castle. I've never seen so many as gather on the beaches in that area.

RE: Kansas hot spots?

I second the recommendation of skipnchar on visiting the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson; it's a site that is devoted to rocketry and space exploration. The exhibits are under the leadership of the Smithsonian so you're going to see world-class quality stuff; plan on spending several hours there. And I always liked the campus of Kansas State University up at Manhattan, the limestone buildings are really pretty to view. Check out the Pizza Hut in Aggieville next to the campus; it's (or was) the place for good pizza and a beer or two!

RE: Chaco Canyon Park Road

It would be a shame to pave the road in to Chaco, part of our great experience of visiting the place last winter was driving the bumpy road to the park in our minivan. Just took it slow and easy and had no problems. Paving would bring too many visitors to a very sensitive area and in time it would not be so unique and adventuresome. Yes, the road is kind of tough for the NPS employees who need to travel in/out on their days off, but don't think they're complaining. However, next trip we'll take the Jeep so I don't scrape any rocks with the minivan.

RE: US 101 Tillmook ro Willits

On your way south on US 101 I'd highly recommend an overnight stay at Harris Beach SP just north of Brookings OR. Nice park, as are most all OR SP's. And I'll second the vote for the Samoa Cookhouse just west of Eureka CA, good food at a reasonable price; take time to visit the museum at the same location too! Take your time while driving south, lots of places to stop and enjoy the views or even venture down to the beach.
