RE: Fiat to Offer Lifestyle Truck

Don't write letters. Mark your ballots for people that will again represent the America people, not just the people/corps that put money in their re-election kitty.
Who would that be? I think you're more likely to find sasquatch mounting a unicorn than a politician that isn't more concerned with money than the country.

I will reiterate, if there is a rule, there is most likely a way to break it.
Sadly, that freedom is reserved for the very wealthy and those that hold public office.

RE: My tow pig/DD build thread. F350/Cummins 6.7/twins/6R140

I am doing some reading between the lines here, and correct me if I am wrong....... But the actual engine swap is not the issue, but instead it is what the computer sees when it interfaces with the vehicle to be inspected......this is the issue?
Absolutely correct
If one were to assume you could get the new engine's ECM to tell the inspection station's computer what it is looking for then all would be good? Based on what is available in the aftermarket now, could someone (in theory, atleast) custom program a new ECM to give this information?
Yes, in theory, that could work. There is still a question of installing the EGR system as the stock 6.7 has. That would be a feat to plumb and program with 2 turbos.

RE: My tow pig/DD build thread. F350/Cummins 6.7/twins/6R140

I don't think a lot of folks on here realize how easy it is get by the smog testing. On several other forums it is common knowledge that knowing the right people and/or throwing a few bucks to the testing guy will result in a passing inspection. I am not advocating this approach, just stating that there are ways to get around everything.
I don't think you realize that a computer is not likely to accept a bribe. One again, in Nevada (et al.), the computer is setup for the specific brand, year, and engine of the vehicle to be tested. The results of the smog check are all electronically verified. If you have a "way to get around that", I'm all ears.

The goody two shoes woosies in this forum cannot handle mods. You should just stick with cummins forum.I love it there.
Without a doubt it's a great mod, some of us are just curious of the details. I used to own an '08 F350 and I looked into doing the same conversion. The sad part was the state government was the biggest obstacle.
I guess you need to inform some of us on this obstacle. Why would the state that you live in object to an engine swap, especially if the engine (and emissions compliance) is newer than what the chassis was equipped with?
Where I live it is a non issue, but I'm curious as to why it would be in other locales.
It's really not that difficult to see where the problems would arise when you watch how the inspections are performed. You show up in a Ford and the subsequent inspection criteria will be predicated on Ford parameters. The computers/ dyno that the smog stations use are specifically outlined by the state nd there are NO alternatives. You show up in an '08 Ford and the comnputer will be looking for an 8 cylinder 6.4 liter engine and all the corresponding OBDII data. You don't simpy state "Oh it's a Dodge engine in my Ford press the other button Mr. Smogman".
I wish the OP all the luck in his conversion. It's, unfortunately, not a viable task where I live.

I think he was pointing out the " but state law shouldn't trump federal law " comment :B CARB who employees my cousin BTW, is one power house in not only the biggest auto market but any thing to do with air quality. Even the fireplace's are regulated in new home construction not to mention little things like lawn equipment engines. If you look at any states new laws regarding air quality standards, it was CARB related. Sorry you already knew that I guess :B
Does OP live in Cali? If memory serves me right from other posts, I think so.
Thank you sir, saved me some typing.

States, however could be different, but state law shouldn't trump federal law.
Seriously? Have you ever heard of CARB?

RE: My tow pig/DD build thread. F350/Cummins 6.7/twins/6R140

Most jurisdictions allow an engine swap provided the new engine is the same emissions age or new than the old one.
The Cummins 6.7 is certified until 2012. My specific engine was used in a MY 2010 truck. My truck is a MY2008.
If my Cummins 6.7 was equipped with all its emissions equipment, my truck would have no problem passing an emissions test anywhere in the country.
Obviously the twin turbo setup negates passing the emissions test in some jurisdictions. But nothing stops me from putting the engine back to stock should I need to.
I will be deleting the EGR and DPF for the time being. I may install them at a later date.
I can only speak for Washington state but your truck would not pass here. When they connect to the trucks computer, it has to be the exact configuration and eng code the testing computer is looking for. Anything else will stop the test before any measurements can even be made.
Same with Nevada. It would be a square peg, round hole deal with the smog stations. You would have to fight the DMV for some sort of relief.

RE: Ok here we go

Illegal and unsafe (for you, your family, everyone else on the road) isn't a question of distance.
This is the MOST FALSE statement of ALL the false statements said! The cops DO NOT CARE about the manufactures limits. ESPECIALLY GCWR! GAWR's you might run into some issues with, actual GVWR on the door sticker, They DO NOT CARE ABOUT! They only care about how much gvw tag you have paid for. If the GVW tag is less than the door tag, you get what is on the paper work! NOT the door tag!
Marty
Are you certain about that? Are you licensed to practice law and checked the laws in all 50 states and Canada? Your statement is just as bad as his!!!
You don't have to be "licensed to practice law" to know that he's correct. In fact, the lawyers I know have NO CLUE what GCWR, GVWR, RAWR, etc., even mean. Furthermore, who said anything about Canada? Should we check the traffic laws in Pakistan?
I have no idea
That should have been your whole post right there.

RE: Diesel Emissions Impact on Health New Low Emissions Engines

Starting in 2013, the rate of decline in prices of digital electronics components like memory and microprocessors will slow from dropping 50% every 18 months to taking 3 years or 36 months.
That trend line will continue out to 2020, which means the price of a functionally identical digital electronic component that cost $100 in 2012 will cost $50 in 2015, then $25 in 2018.
Is that what's hanging underneath my truck that filters the exhaust, "digital electronics"?

Anyone who signed onto first generation DPF / SCR technology is going to get mugged.
3rd or 4th generation technology will be much better... on the market around 2025.
Why don't you tell us about it Nostradamus?

And it was mentioned a couple of times that Chrysler has paid back the loans it received - with interest. Shades of the 70's when it paid back those loans ahead of time, too. Again it proves that it's the little company that could. Go Chrysler!
That's not entirely correct. Our chosen leader decided to forgive several billion dollars in loans to Chrysler. Gotta keep those unions happy.:R
