RE: 5th Wheel vs. TT

The biggest limitation you are going to run into is your payload capacity. I have a 2004 with the Duramax and the sticker in my door jam shows max cargo weight is 2443lbs. I haven't really looked at any 5r's in detail but for my numbers, I would be looking for one with a gross weight of 10,000lbs max to give about a 2000lb pin weight.
I did take mine across the CAT scales a while back to see how close that number was. If I remember correctly it was within 70lbs of being true, and that was with the truck loaded just like we were camping.
Hope that helps.

RE: Do I Need A WDH

You must first look at this on your hitch and see what it shows for Maximum tongue weight for weight carrying
http://casitaclub.com/forums/uploads/monthly_03_2011/post-2453-0-51617900-1300290571_thumb.jpg
If your loaded tongue weight exceeds that, they yes you will need a WDH.

RE: to chip or not to chip DURAMAX engine?

On a related subject, how do some of you feel about the benefits of changes to improve the air intake and exhaust on a Duramax?
I have seen several things on the Duramax sites saying that there are no real gains on the intake unless you are in the 550+HP range.
Now, for the exhaust there is a definite benefit there...especially since it appears you have the LLY motor. You can add a 4" exhaust with muffler and help eliminate the overheating that some people see with this motor. It will lower the EGT's some, and they will drop faster if they increased while towing uphill or the motor is working hard. I have added a 4" stainless system on mine and it did not increase the sound at all over stock.
Hope that helps.

RE: to chip or not to chip DURAMAX engine?

If you want to make any adjustments, don't look anywhere other than EFI Live. You will have to find a reputable tuner that will build tunes for your truck for what you need. I personally have 5 different tunes I can change with a flick of a strategically located switch, ranging from optimized stock up to +100HP. I do have a specific tune for towing and it adds a "turbo brake" on that setting (changes the vanes in the turbo to act as a brake) and it is fantastic for towing.
If you are serious about adding power or economy to your truck EFI can do it.
Check out any of the Duramx forums to read up more on it and find out some of the best tuners in the US.
Hope that helps.
Edit: Our last 200 mile trip towing TT in sig (5400lbs loaded) I averaged 15mpg hand calculated. I am no where near the weight you are, but that was an improvement from stock. I also did not put EFI Live on my truck for added mileage towing, it was strictly for non towing fun with a little added bonus when towing.

RE: Looking for 1'st hand info on Boat-n-Rv.

I would have financing in place before talking to them.
Check their website and make sure they price they are telling you is the price on the website. Also, make sure they don't have an identical model at another location for less money.
Double\triple check all paperwork before PDI, if they say they will add/include anything, get it in writing before any papers are signed.
Some of these things I would consider standard for a purchase, but more so for your question.

RE: Do I need weight distribution?

1st thing to check when deciding on the need for a WD hitch.... check the label on your hitch. It should tell you how much weight it is rated for with and without weight distribution. If the tongue weight of your trailer is greater than the rated weight of your hitch without using the weight distribution, you need it.

No, PF does not have any off leash parks. Now, if you were to venture over to Knoxville we have several to chose from.

RE: Hand held electric drill for jacks

I have an 18v Hitachi that I carry in the truck and use it almost every setup and breakdown. I'd say it is overkill, but isn't bigger always better? :)

RE: B&W turnover w/ Companion, Pullrite Superglide adapter?

And when I'm all done with the fab work I have some cleaning to do :(
The DW says this is what i am suppose to be working on! Not redesigning a working hitch. When will they understand.....I just can't leave things alone.
Start with the can on the far left, it will make the rest of it a little better. :)

I guess I have been fortunate in that I have not had issues up to this point. I am sure that anything is possible, but I wouldn't let it slow us down from traveling.

Not sure how far away Turlock, Ca is from you but there is a dealer there selling a 2012 for 37,999.
I can't help with any of the other questions, sorry.

RE: weighing trailer

As long as the truck and trailer axles are on different sections of the scale they will give you numbers for each and gross on all. The scale show below has 5 separate sections they can get weights on.

RE: System wanted to remember campgrounds

Many campgrounds give you a map of the park and directions to your site. We keep these in a scrapbook along with notes about our experience.
+1
I keep a 3 ring binder that I punch any CG maps and put them in. I also have paper in there that I can take notes on and file with the CG map. We don't cover that much ground when it comes to different CG's so it is easy to keep up with. While we are driving DW keeps notes in a small spiral notebook that stays in the truck.
When we get back from a trip all that will get scanned into the PC to keep electronically as well.

RE: "newbie" mistakes

I have pulled into a site, careful to make sure the awning and the slide will miss trees. Go about the setup process and when going to plug in shore power realize I am about 2 feet short of reaching the power pole. No problem, I have one of the fancy 30amp extension cords......at home :( Hook her up and slider her on back till the cord will reach. Luckily it was a smaller tree (or large bush?) by the end of the awning and with a little fancy branch arranging I was able to get everything to work :D

RE: Jayco 17C vs Toyota 4Runner V6

My mother towed an older R-Vision 17b (similar size and weight numbers) with an S10 Blazer that had the V6 and it was not horrible. A weight dist hitch was not needed as the loaded tongue weigh was less than 300lbs and fell within her hitch ratings.
With that said, I would not load this thing up and head for the west coast with it. When she hauled it, it was her and her 7 pound dog covering ground all over east Tennessee. Server her great for what she used it for.
