RE: Aluminum Sheet Finishing Options

I'm not sure what grade it is, or what brand paint was used, but I the paint on the flat aluminum sides of the Tiger (19' C) looks like new after 6.5 years. I just wax it twice a year with plain old Turtle Wax. Easy on, easy off. I think I recall something about 'aircraft grade paint' in the sales yak, but can't swear to it. I think it's done by a auto shop; it's pretty much the last step before delivery. I just wish they'd used a similar grade of paint on the roof molding instead of white gelcoat. That stuff's a chore to wax. Jim, "Black holes are where the Universe divided by zero."

RE: Roadtrek Dometic RM2354 dilemma..

A couple of links I found that may be useful.... The user's manual: http://www.dometic.com/31a5c621-4a0e-4bd0-bbc8-006ba0f165f1.fodoc The service manual for many newer models of Dometics: http://www.fourwheelcampers.com/NewDometicRefrigeratorManual.pdf The parts list with better illustrations than either manual: http://www.dometic.com/36a91f2a-8752-462b-ae68-39dcf2b66b21.fodoc Jim, "Mo' coffee!"

RE: Dometic RM7401 3 way fridge question...

Here's a pdf. of the manual for the Dometic 2354 http://www.dometic.com/31a5c621-4a0e-4bd0-bbc8-006ba0f165f1.fodoc . I think that if you enter 'Dometic' and the four digit model number into google, the user's manual will be at one of the first links. The burner & chimney cleaning instructions start on p. 13-14. Not a real simple procedure, but probably not too difficult for the average DIY'er. On late edit, here's a link for a pdf. shop service manual for a lot of recent models. http://www.fourwheelcampers.com/NewDometicRefrigeratorManual.pdf. It includes quite a bit for the troubleshooting DIY'er. Down a ways into it, it says 'doesn't have to be perfectly level, but more level works better'.... interesting. Jim, "That's not a hairstyle. RE: Question on Front Curtain Track Fasteners (RoadTrek)

Mine are fastened with the square hole Robinson screws. X2. IIRC from when I relocated my '02 C190's rear door curtains, they take a size 0 driver. I think the only one I found locally was in a set of various driver bits from Home Depot. But that's dredging up a maybe-memory from 8-9 years ago. Jim, "Talk nerdy to me."

RE: Roadtrek Dometic RM2354 dilemma..

I'm thinking you need to do one of two things... either take it to an good RV shop and be prepared to leave it, or _buy_ a cheapie electrical meter (aka Volt-ohm meter, multimeter, VOM) at Sears or a tool store (under $20-30) and learn to use it. There are abundant explanations online, plus the manual. Practice reading voltage on a flashlight battery, continuity on a piece of wire or coin. The lights on the panel work on 12V, so either the new board is bad, or there's an issue with the 12V supply or ground. Jim, "Mo' coffee!"

RE: Sun Barometric Altimeter

Have you tried googling for the maker's website? It should have either instructions or a good write up of the features, or both. Of course, if it's made in the Orient, the 'English' may require some reading between the lines (but I doubt my Chinese would be half as good ;)). RE: no dc power when camping

The panel lights are measuring converter output voltage when plugged in, I think, so are not a good indication of battery condition (at least on RT B's). Make sure your 'battery' switch is on, if PW uses one. Jim, "I used to eat a lot of natural food until I read that most people die of natural causes."

RE: Intervec Falcon Owners

Not absolutely sure about this, but I think you'd have an 'A-B' selector switch in the antenna's coax lead if you had a cable connection & an antenna. Look for the switch along the coax, around where it connects to the TV. Jim, "What you are experiencing is not a problem. It is an undocumented feature. Thank you for calling Microsoft."

RE: Post Your 'B' Sightings Here

Friday afternoon I was going a short distance out of town on US 74 when I saw an older hightop Airstream 190 Ford, the one that resembles a romantic encounter between a van and a flying saucer 8). No pic, but it was for sale. Didn't have time to stop and get particulars, but it was in shiny original silver and blue colors, and looked well cared-for and undamaged. I can easily go by and get phone # and price info if anybody's real interested. It really looked good. Old Radios... that Astro van-based Tiger does look like a mini-C, but it's actually a B by the RVIA's definitions. Provan bought complete Astro cargo vans and cut away the rear body, same as RT does on the 210. There were two models, the pop-top GT and the hard-top XL shown. Same floorplan as my Tiger CX, just smaller. Jim, "Mo' coffee!"

RE: astro van rooftop air

Nope, I haven't done it, but to try to answer part of your question... I think the Coleman Polar Cub is about the smallest roof A/C made at either 9000 or 9200 Btu. It should be quite adequate for cooling a small van, unless it's bare metal walls. My Tiger has one, and it's quite adequate. I can't comment knowingly on the strength of the roof or difficulty of wiring for campground power. A cheaper & easier alternative might be a portable A/C, but you would need to give up floor space and rig a way to fit the air vent hoses thru a window. Jim, "Mo' coffee!"

RE: "Ole School" Amp Meter on Solar Panel

Here's a pair of meters for ya.... there's no date on the milliamp meter, but the volt meter was calibrated on 9-23-29, and has a real wax seal on the calibration document. The DC mA meter has 3 ranges depending on how it's hooked up, 0-7.5, 30, or 150. The AC Voltmeter goes to 300 & 600 volts. http://oi40.tinypic.com/25tyckz.jpg But they're not for sale. They're part of the decoration in my man-cave ;). Jim, "Caution: Do not look into laser beam with remaining eye!"

RE: GPS warning

I've owned four Garmins over the years, and was pretty happy with the first three. But I finally reached the limits of my tolerance with my latest, a Nuvi. Falling off the dash mount, tying up my internet connection all day long and still not updating, etc. So I used it as a leveling block for a while. He11, it wasn't even good for that! I still use my old 2610 to find local addresses and for a speedometer in the car. The RV got a TomTom, which I'm pretty happy with. It's a tool. Like any tool, you have to know how to use it and know its limitations. You don't generally use a tack hammer to drive framing nails. In a strange city, I'll often refer to paper maps & Google Earth before setting out, and write a few sequential essential notes for street names and turns in big letters on a notepad. But GPS has enabled me to take some trips to places I might not have been willing / able to try to find without it. Jim, "After four decimal places, nobody cares."

RE: Found the most compact and lightweight camping chair.

A bit over a year ago, Outdoor World/Bass Pro Shops had the steel model of the Express Lounger for over $10 cheaper than REI. Dunno if this will hold true for the aluminum ones. Personally, I find the EL's bolt-upright seating position fine for socializing & eating but quite uncomfortable for reading or loafing. Jim, "hello, Incontinence Hotline. Can you hold, please?"

RE: Question on Dometic RM2354

Yep, over 12 hours, maybe 24, is needed to get an empty 3-way reefer down to temp. It's a lot quicker if you put a few frozen milk jugs of water in during cool-down. Even then, pre-cool _everything_ you plan to load into it in the house reefer. Leave a little air circulation space on the top and middle shelves, or even add one of the cheap battery fans. If you're carrying water bottles there, consider pre-freezing them. You can add a 12V computer cooling muffin fan blowing out thru the upper vent for faster cool-down. Wire it thru a manual switch to the 12V supply for the reefer. Jim, "Mo' coffee!"

RE: What to do when you break down

First thing after getting safely off the road, is to check for cell reception so I know if I've got backup, or am on my own. Next is to figure out if I can handle it with the skills I've got and resources that I'm carrying. If needed, I can make a phone call for instructions & advice to a friend who's a dam' fine mechanic. Final fall back is to call my insurance company's road service, get comfortable, and wait. So far, I've had to use this strategy once, down to calling the friend. Knock on wood (taps self on side of head). Jim, "Beer is now cheaper than gas. Drink, don't drive."

RE: Can Cats and View co-exist?

I'd strongly suggest that you let the cats get accustomed to the RV sitting still first. Maybe start with a few daily feedings in the RV with one of you sitting with them, then progress to around the block & further. My Miz Plush is well trained not to get in my lap or the driver's footwell while the RV is in motion. When I put it in 'park', she's immediately in my lap looking out the window. Non-fishy food seems to reduce the litter odors a bit. Jim, "That's not a hairstyle. That's a cry for help!"

RE: Switched From Toyota to Silverado.....Mega Sway

Didn't see any mention of what size airbags you have. But if they're interconnected to simplify filling, that's likely part of it. On my Tiger CX (19' C on a Silverado, very similar to TC), the 5000# air bags at modest pressure (20-35 psi) reduce sway more than they do at the minimum 10 psi. No pic. Go to 'Forum Technical Support' further down the opening page and read up. Basically it'll tell you that the pic has to be uploaded to a photo hosting site like tinypic.com and than linked from there. Jim, "I never finish anyth...."

RE: Any good NC beach campgrounds???

Never been in it, but there's a state park with (I think) a campground in Carolina Beach on the river side. That's south of Wilmington. I was there to visit Ft. Fisher and for the 4x4 on-the-beach camping, so I really didn't pay a lot of attention to it. Jim, "Mo' coffee!"
