RE: Pulling double trailers

What makes a fifth wheel a fifth wheel? Is it the manner in which it is attached to the TV? If so, when I see a semi pulling a long trailer I'll stop calling them tractor-trailers and start calling them tractor-5ers. Hey remoandiris, Really?? Yup, the manner it's attached. Also refered to as a semi-trailer. Regards, Hamshog

RE: Pulling double trailers

A fifth wheel setup is not a trailer, it's a fifth wheel and you can attach a trailer to it and you are legal, the thing you need to consider is the length, that's where you'll be breaking the law. Hey ramlinwillie, If your talking about a 5th wheel dolly, it is a trailer used to provide a front axle for a semi trailer. If your talking about a trailer that attaches to the truck with a "fifth wheel" hitch, yes it's a trailer. If your talking about the "5th wheel hitch", no it's the part that hooks the trailer and truck together and lets them articulate to make turns. If your talking about something else, please 'splain???? Regards, Hamshog Because we're talking about campers it should be easy to understand. I'm talking about double towing, a fifth wheel is not consider a trailer and you can attach two trailers behind a fifth wheel and you would be double towing, legal in CO. Hey ramlinwillie, To say a 5th wheel coach is not a trailer is flat out wrong. Must be the thin air in Colorado.... :) Regards, Hamshog

RE: Stupid Question

If you are a working fulltimer, then you're probably closer to a Workamper than you are a fulltimer. Somehow *my* interpretation of fulltimer doesn't mean simply living on wheels in an RV park and rarely moving. But I guess you could take it that far - if it sounds better than "living in a trailer park". It's sort of like a gal I know who considers herself "not married" just because she hasn't lived with her estranged husband for 20 years. They just never bothered getting a divorce. Ah the details. We have "Workcampers" in the park. They're fulltimers too!! Somehow *my* interpretation of fulltimer doesn't mean simply someone who doesn't have a job and travels from place to place. But I guess you could take it that for - if it sounds better than "living like a gypsy". When I was working in Seattle and living on my boat on Lake Washington for a couple years, I was considered a "liveaboard". Didn't have to sail the seven seas to be one... Opinions and interpretations are great. Everyone's got their own idea of what's what. Regards, Hamshog

RE: Stupid Question

Would you consider "full-timing" when you live in your RV but still work full time at a regular job. We are hopefully going to be doing this in the next few months for about 2 1/2 years until DW retires. I just want to know what to say to the good folks out there that ask, are you full-timers. Right now we say full-time workers and part-time RV'ers. But we still have a stick home and that will change. So I think technically we would be FULL-TIMERS.:h Hey blkdodge, Sure you're a fulltimer. Just like we are. Only 58 and can't retire yet, but living in our coach for over a year and a half now. Have an annual site in town and a summer membership in the mountains to get out of the heat in the summer. We're like many that are working fulltimers. Others like 2oldman that may be retired fulltimers. Don't have another place we call home, so we must be fulltimers..... :) Regards, Hamshog

RE: Can I tow it?

Never did anyone say air bags would increase the GVWR, RAWR, GCWR... What they will do is exactly what the extra leaf or overload spring does for an F350 versus an F250. Again- that trailer will be very safe and tow very comfortably behind an F250- with or without airbags. I know because I did it- with the same truck and a much heavier trailer- and no airbags. ...that last little leaf spring, sometimes known as an overload spring, from what I understand DOES help add to GVWR of a truck, if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong, but I'll agree with some on here, only difference sometimes between a 2500HD and 3500HD is that one little extra leaf spring..adding possibly up to an additional 600# or more to GVWR , years ago on a Chevy 2500HD, GVWR was 9200#, on the 3500SRW Chevy, GVWR was, I think 9800#....only difference in the two was that one smaller leaf spring.....so I do believe the extra little leaf spring add's more leveling due to the fact that you can add more to the bed because GVWR has been raised some... ON EDIT: Some how we've gotten off topic or I'm not paying attention. IF in fact, the GVWR of the OP's truck is 10,000#, as stated by someone else on here and the GVWR of the 5er he is talking about is 13,800# or something to that effect, though that sounds light for that 5er....then your right....I believe his 3/4 ton F250, 20,000GVWR will tow the 5er and be in the trucks limits... way too many threads to try to keep up with, I'm getting too old for this, need to slow down:B Hey NCHauler, The spring didn't do a thing for GVWR or RAWR on the Chevy's, but the tire/wheel size did!! The 3500HD had a higher load range tire on the truck, other wise, the 2500 and 3500 are the same truck. That's what determines your RAWR... Air bags don't add GVWR to the truck or the axle, but they do have a 5000# lifting capacity from the manufacturers. What ever that means to you... Regards, Hamshog

RE: 50amp rig on 30 amps

We will be seasonal camping this year in our new Komfort 3530 that features a 13,500btu air conditioner and a 7,500btu master bedroom air. What do you guys think are the chances that we will be able to run both air units off of our campgrounds 30amp system if I have nothing else running on electricity except for the refrigerator? Hey Gary, Main A/C 11amps, bedroom A/C 8amps?, fridge 2amps. I would think you'll be fine. I can run a 15k and 13.5k on 30amps, especially if your voltage is high on the circuit. More volts = less amps.. :) Regards, Hamshog

RE: Full timer RV loans

Hey Dave, We refinanced our coach a few months ago with Bank of the West. No problems and went from an 8% loan to a 4.6% loan!! Regards, Hamshog

RE: 5th Wheel Hitch Question

Hey stevem, I believe the sidewinder is an extension that would put additional leverage/stress on the framing of the trailer where the pin mounts. I went with a SuperGlide and haven't worried a bit about my coach hitting the cab. Regards, Hamshog

RE: Drainmaster Valves Customer service (or lack of)

I got great service from Drain Master when having trouble with our black tank valve just after we started fulltiming. Carriage replaced two valves in a matter of a month. The rv manufacturers don't install the valve per the valve manufacturers specs!! Try tipping the valve stem up as far as possible to verticle. Mine are probably 15 degrees above horizonal, but seem to be working very well for the last year or more. Regards, Hamshog

RE: Decisions, decisions decisions Inverter gen vs solar

We already have a Champion 3500/4000 that will run the A/C if needed but the areas we camp are above 8500 ft and some never get above 70 degrees, even in the summer. It does get very cold at night though so the furnace is required. Sams has the Champion 2000 inverter for $300. It would be smaller, quieter and cheaper to run than the big one. If I didn't like it, I could take it back or even make a small profit after Sams stops clearing them out. A outfit out here has 200 watt solar panels on clearance for $290. I have no idea how much charge it would replace and would probably have to carry the 3500 just in case. How much does a 200 watt panel do for me? Even at below freezing temps, we set the furnace at 50* over night. we don't use the house lights meaning the big draws are the controls for the fridge, hot water heater, detector, minimal pump and furnace. I'd have to add the cost of a controller to the panel at least. I also have only the one battery that came with the TT. We boondock for weeks so a bigger bank of batteries isn't going to do much without the ability to recharge. I'm sure neither the generators or the panels will be around long so I'll be mulling this all day. Any thoughts? JinD\ Hey Jim, For a group that would usually flame anyone using a Champion for power, sure hates quiet solar systems!! Check this site for info on solar and what it can really produce. Handy Bob's Solar A few have posted that 400 or 800watts isn't enough??? With 200watts and 2-6volt batteries, I would guess you could use the solar most of the time, with little if any genset use by the size of your coach and the amount you say you use. All for less than $1000.00. No gas to buy or noise to listen too!! I only have a genset now, as we're in parks 99% of the time. Solar would go on ours if boondocking were going to be at least 40 to 50% of our travels.. Regards, Hamshog

RE: What would be better?

Hey Joe, Depends on whether you'll be boondocking over 50% of the time or not. You'll recoup solar in 1 to 2 years, over paying rv park fees for that time. $1500.00 to $2500.00 for system, replace batteries every 6 to 8 years, $300 to $600.00. I would think if you used a genset for boondocking, you'd be rebuilding or replacing every 2 to 4 years, depending on hours used,(I figured 4hrs. a day min.), pay for and haul the fuel, listen to the thing run, and still have a good set of batteries. $400.00 to $3000.00 for genset, $1000.oo to $3000.00 per year for fuel, plus batteries every 6 to 8 years, $300.00 to $600.00, and rebuild or replace every 2 to 4 years, $400.00 to 3000.00.) If you're in a park most of the time, a genset for emergencies would be best. Just my $.02... Regards, Hamshog

RE: California

I see a lot topics relating to snowbirding in FL, RGV and AZ, but none relating to CA. After snowbiriding in AZ the last few years we are thinking about CA. Any pros or cons regarding spending a couple of months in CA.? Hey nschurr, Pros: I guess it depends on what you like to do. From Palm Springs you can be on great Jeep/Offroad trails from 30 minutes to 1 hour, snow skiing in 1-1/2 hours, deep sea fishing in 2 hours, San Diego in 2-1/2 hours, Los Angeles in 1-1/2 to 2 hours, and museums, casinos, over 100 golf courses, theater and shows, or tennis, hiking trails, shopping, right here in the desert within minutes. Cons: Might cost a little more than AZ or TX/FL, but you'll never know what you're missing until you try it!!! Regards, Hamshog

RE: Anyone else consider the awning on the RV useless?

Hey Trailernovice, Useless??? It's a must for us!! We're fulltimers in So. Cal and couldn't be without them. Yes, we have two on the door side. The awnings(electric Carefree's) and sun shades are always out, unless the wind is gusting above 20 mph. Especially in the summer when the temps are 100+ degrees by 9 or 10am. Even when we're in the mountains in the summer, the awnings are out to keep the patio/bbq area cleaner and to keep the coach cooler. We wouldn't be without ours. Love the electric over the old manual awnings. Just push the button, up, down, what's not to like?? Regards, Hamshog
