RE: Electric Awnings tie-downs??

Our awning is a Carefree Eclipse and I tie it down all the time. I use 36” rubber cargo straps (looped over the roller), a 3/16” rope and screw in rods in the ground. About 10 days ago we went through a storm in WV that took down two trees in the CG lots of heavy rain and 50 to 60 MPH winds-the awning did fine. I have it adjusted with one end lower than the other for water run off. The rubber straps allow it to move a little without undue stress on the arms. When tied there is very little load on the straps-just enough to keep the rope in place.

RE: Trailer Breaks Question

I just took my brakes apart to change the shoes and as I see it the geometry of the way they function there is no shoe braking when the drum is turning backwards. You may get a little breaking from the magnet against the drum but it would be very minimal. Other magnet break systems may be different and work both directions but the ones on our TT will not. There is a simple test that may answer that question. When backing up activate the trailer brakes by hand on the controller and see if the trailer brakes work.

RE: what type of bearing grease in zurk fitting????

Rhasse is correct. I experienced that very situation. I added a different kind of grease when I had a bearing failure on the road. That was last summer. I lost another bearing this summer. When I took the wheel off the grease had separated and the bearing was almost dry. I will never add grease again without removing the bearings, clean and inspect then re grease by hand.

Storm damage closes IL Beach SP

Illinois Beach Park has closed due to storm Damage. We got the notice from Reserve America a couple of days ago. It must be really bad for them to close the entire campground. According to Reserve America we are to get a full refund for the weeks stay we lost. The park is scheduled to re open July 31. The closest place acceptable to stay to IL Park was in Caledonia, WI. The Happy Acres RV Park in Bristol, WI was a bad experience when we stayed there before.

RE: What size power jack?

Our TT came with an Atwood 2500 and it really struggled to lift the TV & TT to get the bars in place. I bought an Ultra-fab 3500 and it was OK except I could not lower the tailgate. I went back to a 3500 Atwood and am very pleased with its performance.

RE: Fresh water tank fill up and filters

I fill ours when we leave home for the summer. At home we are on a well and most city water does not taste good to us. I maintain it as we travel when we get to a park that has good water. I use a filter on the hose when replenishing it on the road. We will drink bottled water if we are at a park that does not have good water. The trailer also has an in-house filter that all water goes through.

RE: Visited New England; Glad We're Home

We spent a month in Maine alone and did not see all of it. We love going to the Eastern states. Currently in VA-lots of history-lots of beautiful scenery.

RE: Odetah Camping Resort

We stayed there a couple of years ago. It was OK but they are not dog friendly. They wanted us to drive the dog to a site that was filled with trash. If that situation is still the same and you have a dog I would not suggest that you stay there. We will not stay there again.

RE: RV park around Teton/Yellowstone

We prefer Grizzly RV in West Yellowstone. For the Teton’s we stayed at Flagg Ranch-never again. We got tired of eating dust. Luckily we could run the A/C enough to keep closed up and the dust out.

RE: A very unpleasant surprise

This may not be the case, but several years ago I received a letter similar to that for a debt in a store I had never made a purchase from. After the second letter I contacted the state attorney general’s office and the problem went away. I recommend that your friends get an attorney quickly.

RE: Trailer Hop on concrete hiway

Believe it-or-not. I found a smooth concrete road in Kansas last summer; it was a pleasant surprise. Drove through Shreveport on I20 three years ago – will not go there again. And yes I have learned to dislike concrete roads, you would think with today’s technology we could have a smooth one.

RE: Slapping mirrors

I have a nice scratch on my left side mirror from Road to the Sun at Glacier last summer-and I had them pulled in. The other driver looked very scared of the road. My right mirror was up against the rock and I was setting still in traffic due to construction. She did not stop. We wondered how many she hit during the drive. Her mirrors were not pulled in.

RE: installing maxx air and fantastic fan

I added a fantastic fan to the bedroom vent that will move air in or out. It works great, especially on cool nights to bring the cool air in. Turn the one in the bathroom on to pull air out when the bedroom is pulling air in. All three of the roof vents have Max-Air covers.

Good post. What is this for...
Vegetable oil in commodes - It keeps the water from evaporating
Glass in freezers with ice cube in it- if freezer goes off the ice melts to let us know (it may re freeze but we still would have to throw the food away)
Battery tenders – The tenders keep the batteries working and charged.

RE: Using state parks, other non-RV park facilities or boonies

Like others have said all will vary. We have found some SP’s with full hook ups in WA. Some have nothing but a spot to set up. In IL we stay at a park that has electric only. COE parks (Our favorite) usually have water & electric sites available along with just tent sites with nothing. We stayed in a wilderness area in AZ that had nothing-it was a great stay. Currently we are in a VA SP with water and 30amp electric.

RE: Internet access

When we started traveling we were trying to use WI-FI and it was not a reliable method. We bought an AT&T air card that was iffy in some places then it just gave up working. For the last three years we have been on the Verizon air card with good success. We also switched our cell service from AT&T to Verizon. Be careful of the Verizon 4G air card as there is very few places where 4G is available.

RE: Why do you like RVing?

We use the trailer as a hotel room to see the country and visit family and friends around the country. We do not especially like crowded RV Parks where RV’s are stacked close to each other. We do like the COE & SP’s where you have some sizable sites and mostly in the shade on a lake or river. We spend several months during the summer traveling. We would not be RV’ing if we were still working and only used it on vacations and weekends.

RE: Lake Benbrook, TX

Take a look at Mustang Park as well. We did our first outing there to get to know the trailer (our first). Our site was next to the water. We did this in March and missed the summer busy season. Also, it is a little closer to Burleson. The RV Ranch and a couple of other RV Parks are just south of Burleson on I-35 that have full hook ups. We have not stayed at any of the RV parks on I-35 but RV ranch seems to be the better of them.
