RE: Axle's

Thanks all I did go to the book on the axels and the angles are where they are supposed to be according to the installation instructions. The wheels are a long way from anything they can hit. When I move the trailer from home to the storage shed, which is 27 miles from the house, I do not use the equal-i-zer bars on the hitch. The trailer is empty and does pull better. I have not tried pulling it loaded with the bars off. I will try that next time we go on an outing with it. Next planned trip is in July to escape the Texas heat for a couple of months.

RE: Axle's

I weighed the TT at a CAT scale when it was fully loaded for a 6 month trip, except for the dog which rides in the back seat and weighs 31 pounds. The fresh water tank was 1/2 full and the holding tanks were partially full from a weekend at a COE park. I pull with a Chevy 2500HD, diesel crew cab, standard bed. Bed has a fiberglass camper topper on it and is full of chairs etc. I switched to the 1200 bars after talking to Equal-i-zer-it was their recommendation. I realize that the weight will change with the change in provisions as we travel. I don't believe that weight change should be significant to the pulling aspects of the trailer as it is all over the axels. On good roads, which are very few, I cannot tell the TT is back there, however when we get on roads that are bumpy or full of expansion joints the trailer jerks on the truck. Currently I have the trailer level with the truck. I have tried with the hitch about 1 inch down and about 1 inch up from level and did not notice a difference. I watched the axels when going over speed bumps and they do not give at all the entire trailer rises up to go over them. This is what makes me think the rubber torsion bars are not supporting the TT but are bottomed out. I have pulled the trailer just over 30K miles. The first trip I was pulling with an Escalade EXT and it acted much better which is adding to my thinking that the axels are worn out.

Axle's

I have a couple of trailers with conventional springs that pull great. One is about 8K loaded (Sailboat). One is about 7000 loaded with antique tractor. Our TT Rockwood 8314SS has rubber torsion axels and jerks when pulled. They are 3500 pound axels and the loaded TT weighs 6900 pounds total weight. I have adjusted the torsion bars according to the instructions and varied them in both directions . Hitch is Equal-i-zer with 1200 pound bars. I started with 1000 pound bars. The tongue weight is 960 pounds. I am thinking of removing the torsion axels and installing regular spring axels. I am wondering if anyone else has done this?

RE: 2 wheel dr p/u vs 4 wheel dr p/u

On a few occasions I needed the 4WD to keep from spinning on gravel to get into a parking spot. It is want item not necessarily a need item for normal traveling. If you go to a beach area it is nice to be able to drive in the sand. If you get to a really neat park and it is hilly gravel it sure comes in handy. If it’s raining or wet it may be a requirement. I watched a guy give up getting into a RV site because his 2WD drive could not keep from slipping trying to push the fiver up the incline. To each his own-get what you are comfortable with.

RE: Inspection Sticker and Equalizer hitch bracket

I discovered that the bracket works best at 29”. Our TT has never had an inspection sticker to my knowledge. We bought it new from a dealer in Texas four years ago and have towed it over 30k miles.

RE: Cracked Fiberglass question (picture heavy)

Our Rockwood has cracked twice above the rear door. I had it fixed both times? It cracked again before I got it home. I think it is the result of a weak frame that allows too much flex in the door area.

RE: Advice wanted: center awning support

I installed the Carefree on ours and it was an easy installation and works well. All the hardware and instructions needed come with it. Our TT is a fiberglass unit

Fantastic service at RV Park

We are staying at Big Greek RV Park near Annapolis, Missouri. It is a great little park that is about two years old. On Friday we had to go to Cape Girardeau to get DW’s prescription filled. On the way we stopped in Ironton to pick up DW’s dad. We left our border collie in the trailer for the time we were gone. During a visit from the owner the pervious day she offered to walk her for us and we said she will be OK as we should only be gone for about 4 hours. Well the trip had some problems. A tree fell across the road and we had to make a long detour, got lost, the pharmacy took a couple of hours and a couple of other issues delayed our return to the park. I called Patti and ask her to take Liberty for a walk and she was very kind to do it. She called me back a short time later and said Liberty had an accident in the trailer. She has never had a problem before in the four years we have been traveling. There was a bad thunderstorm at the park and the dog is scared to death of thunder and Patti indicated that the storm shook the park quite a lot. We figured that was the problem. Patti cleaned up the mess in our trailer and took the dog to the office with her. I seriously doubt that we could get that kind of service at any other RV Park. We stay there when visiting family in the area.

RE: Storm damage closes IL Beach SP

We have moved to Jelly Stone RV in Caledonia, WI. A little expensive because we do not use any of the amenities that are charged for when we arrived. We have met some neighbors that are here also as a result of the park closing. I understand they have a real mess and over a thousand trees have been destroyed. For a week I have been trying to get an answer from Reserve America and the State as to when our money paid for the site will be refunded, however, I have not been given an answer. They were very quick to charge us and I expect the refund may take a long time-if ever. We had reservations at a COE park on the Mississippi that was cancelled due to flooding and the refund came in two days.

RE: Thor 5ers and Lippert frames

I suspect if you are looking at a used unit and it has survived with no problems for a couple of years of normal use you may be OK. I for one would not buy another unit with a Lippert frame. Ours has not failed but is very flexible and that has caused other issues. Also I would stay away from any ultra lightweight units they seem to be marginal all over. And yes, I agree with others the quality control in the RV world is very marginal to non-existent with some manufactures.

RE: Too Hot to Camp

I think there a lot of folks that have elected to stay home. We have been in several RV parks and a state park that was nearly empty during this heat wave. We were in the NC, VA, WV, KY, and IL area. The weather here in WI has cooled but the RV Park we are in now is only about 20% occupied.

RE: Carlisle Tires (What a Bunch of Junk!!!!)

Our TT came with Carlisle and the first blowout did over 2k worth of damage to the trailer. Second one the TPMS went off when the tread separated and I was able to stop. When I contacted Carlisle they could have cared less. I replaced them with Denman Cargo haulers and three years and 25k miles with no problems-wish I could get another set but they went out of business.

Its to hot!!!!

OK who is tired of the excessive heat in the Midwest? We are in southern IL and will be in southern WI in a couple of days. A few days ago we were in KY and because of the heat and humidity we have not been able to enjoy the outdoors. In KY, along with the heat, the misquotes were really bad. Today there is a slight breeze and they are not a bother here at Rend Lake and I enjoyed a cup of coffee outside. I heard a rumor that Monday it might cool down to the mid 80’s for a day. Yippee. You-all have a good time.

RE: In between wheel chocks. Which one??

I think mine are BAL X, but not sure. You adjust them once and put them between the wheels and move a lever down to tighten. They will slide the wheels on dirt when you forget to take them out and destroy itself if you forget to take one out on concrete-please don’t ask how I know.

RE: solar powered vent caps

I’m missing something here. We are in our fourth year of traveling during the summer and I have yet to have a problem with black tank smell except when at a dump station and it is outside while dumping. Haven’t had problems in the trailer bathroom. Maybe that is an experience I have to look forward to. I do not use any of the manufactured tank chemical products-just a little pine-sol with a couple of gallons of water after dumping.

RE: Is it just me?

I would walk away and never return. There are some good dealers out there, but sometimes they are hard to find.

RE: Different brands

Just my opinion. We have a Forest River product now and are not happy with it. We really like the layout but it is cheaply made and coming apart around us. We are going to purchase a fiver this winter, probably one about three to four years old. In talking to owners of several brands and shopping we have decided to get a Hitchhiker or a Mobile Suites. We are not happy with the cost but will be happy getting a better product.

RE: what type of bearing grease in zurk fitting????

When I pumped grease into mine it was cool out. Expansion drove it out the rubber cap you remove to get to the grease fitting and made a mess on the wheel. Only one wheel out of the four did this.

RE: Electric Awnings tie-downs??

Our awning is a Carefree Eclipse and I tie it down all the time. I use 36” rubber cargo straps (looped over the roller), a 3/16” rope and screw in rods in the ground. About 10 days ago we went through a storm in WV that took down two trees in the CG lots of heavy rain and 50 to 60 MPH winds-the awning did fine. I have it adjusted with one end lower than the other for water run off. The rubber straps allow it to move a little without undue stress on the arms. When tied there is very little load on the straps-just enough to keep the rope in place.
