RE: CHOOSING A CAMPER FOR A "HEAVY DUTY" FORD F 150

Well your braver then I am. How about tires??? What load range do you have?? I have E's on a 2500 ... they are the weakest link.
Pop up at Wal-Mart??? Not me .... too much noise in that parking lot for a hardside. Even with hatches shut.
We looked at lighter campers. We ended up with a Maverick. The light weight campers have smaller tanks, no blinds, etc. etc. Not wanting to have to instal a bunch of stuff or provide a peep show we went for the Maverick.
If I was starting over I would go for a dually. Good fuel economy and the weakest link is no longer tires.

Way too "safe" for us ....

RE: Dental work @ Rio Dental in Juarez, Mex

Algodones is a typical Gringo trap. It exists solely to service cross border shoppers. Nogales and Calexico/Mexicale have cities on the Mexican side. Walk a mile or two into the country and you will find that the deals are better ... more service ... fewer salesmen.

RE: Satellite Internet- do you use it?

Dumped the satellite years ago. Virgin Mobile has a wireless hot spot for $40 a month, but it's on Sprint and coverage can be limited. I now have AT&T. Can serve up to 5 computers wirelessly, 5 gig a month $50, and you can pay by credit card.

RE: Health Insurance

Bank insurance is usually "travel" for accident on short trips. A lot won't cover over 65. Snowbirds and Carp have insurers they recommend. I use Ingle Insurance brokers, just google them. $250 for 60 days is a steal, if you have health issues expect 2 or 3 times that price.

RE: Canadian Zip Codes at Pumps!

It turns out that a Canadian Amex card does not handshake with any gas pump. Just enter a valid zip ... say from your winter campground .... Amex will authorize the payment, the pump is happy with a valid zip.

I owned a Keystone Montana Big Sky ..... big piece of junk. I have a Forest River Maverick .... not perfect but relatively trouble free for 4 years now.

RE: US Passport Card

Everyone in your party needs a passport or a card. If your the driver and take sick .... your insurance company can't fly you or your spouse home without a passport. Someone else in the family will have to drive you and or your rig back to the USA.
If someone back home has an emergency it's a lot simpler to drive to the nearest airport .... not the nearest American airport.

RE: winter use of my fifth wheel

When it is really cold let your faucets drip to keep water from freezing in the lines. Plastic inside over windows might help.Light bulb near tanks to keep them from freezing. Straw or skirt around bottom of trailer to stop wind. Good luck.
This is so wrong in so many ways.
Straw will void your fire insurance and encourage mice etc. Skirt but don't use straw.
Letting the faucet drip will allow the sewer line to gradually ice up. If tanks are exposed they can ice as well. Only let the faucet drip if you have overnight frost and warm days. If it's gonna' be cold for a few days in a row it isn't going to work.
You need a campground who will keep the water and sewer on for you. Find one first, then ask what they recommend. They will have first hand experience with the local climate.

RE: My new bumper...

I thought US law had required removing hood ornaments so a pedestrian would not get impaled. Welded eyes on the bumper would open up a whole set of liability issues if you bump a pedestrian would they not???

RE: Algodonas - Glasses

Figure about $300 for a crown without a root canal and about $60 for a filling. I have been away for a while but I have to go in October and replace 2 50 year old fillings, so we'll see what the price is.

RE: Algodonas - Glasses

Got better glasses for less in Casa Grande AZ. The Mexicans know they can rip people off. The Arizona opticians know they can't overcharge and must compete.
________________________________________________________________________
Is that true for other medical services down there? We have been considering having dental check ups while we are down there this winter.
I get my dental done in Nogales .... it's a bit closer. There are good deals but the shops along the border charge premium $$$$ ..... if you walk into Mexico a mile or so and deal with the same dentist the locals use it's very reasonable.

RE: Which is best?

NM is fine if you can handle snow. Flagstaff Az has ski hills. Phoenix / Tucson get frost after mid December but I have only seen snow on Picacho Peak. Last year we had overnight frost right into February.

RE: Hot water heater Tank

Replace it .... but a pin hole can be fixed with a faucet washer and a sheet metal screw. That is of course if the metal is not corroded so thin the screw won't bite.

RE: South bound countdown

Canadians
Remember the formula for length of visit:
Present year ----- you must count all days while in the US
Previous year ----- you must count 1/3 of the days in the US
year before ----- you must count 1/6 of days in the US
ALL of these three years -- added together --- MUST not exceed 183 days
We have reduced our time in the US to fit in the formula. I have no desire to meet the US tax man.
Ho hum ... I note that no one mentioned that a Canadian can apply for an extension.......

RE: Stove Burner To Warm Up Cabin - Good Idea?

The Coleman Black Cat catalytic heater is supposed to be safe in enclosed spaces (cars, tents, etc.) as long as you have 6 sq. inches of ventilation open.
And if your like some folks who used one in a canvas tent a few years back the state will pick up the cost of your burial.
Look up the definition of "enclosed space" ... it's given in cubic feet by the manufacturer somewhere in the manual.
