RE: Looking for campground in MD, PA, WV, VA with hotel on site

You might want to look into Peaks of Otter on the BRP... There is a campground there, and a NPS run Lodge right across the street. Lodge info Campground Info

RE: Goose Point vs. North Bend COE

I have stayed at both, and they are very much alike, and since they are administered by the same ACOE Division, it makes sense that they look very much alike. North Bend has a lot more lake front sites, Goose Point only has lake front sites in one loop. As stated above, at Goose Point you have the BRP right up the road, that is good for exploration in both directions. Next door is Fairy Stone SP, and there is a place right down the street where they let you dig around for Fairy Stones (good luck, I've never found one). Not sure about boat rentals at Goose Point. North Bend offers 4 loops all with water front sites available, and there are Marina's around the lake that offer boat & canoe rentals. We used to go to the Marina in Clarksville and rent a pontoon boat and a dozen of us would go out and cruise the lake in that thing. Fishing should be good at both campgrounds.

RE: Willimsburg-Busch Gardens

Being local I've stayed at all the campgrounds in the area, and they are all pretty good on their own merits, even Anvil if you can handle having your bones rattled by the trains behind your site. The bottom line, if you need FULL hook-up's then American Heritage is the place. But if you can get by with water & electric then Chippolks Plantation State Park or Newport News Park & Campground (city operated) are very nice campgrounds too.

RE: North Bend COE-site recommendations-view/access to water

I stayed there in October, drove all the open loops and walked through D-Loop which was closed at the time. Most any of the outside sites are waterfront, and not too many bad choices throughout. I really liked C-Loop the best, and they just added water & electric to several sites that didn't previously have it. This is the view from my site (#180), really nice site but difficult to back into with a long trailer, getting out was much easier!! http://www.gonecamping.net/images/northbend/sunset1a.jpg I also have a few more pictures of sites in C-Loop posted HERE

RE: Best date to go to Williamsburg,Va.

As a local in the area, I'd suggest the May date for cooler weather (which will still be quite warm). By June the heat is on in this area and you'll have to deal with that...

RE: National Forest Maps and CG's plus all public land CG's

I noticed that the US Campgrounds site doesn't list one in our area, curious how many others it doesn't list?!

RE: Campgrounds in and near Norfolk, VA

As a local I would agree with most of the above post. If your destination is Hampton, then you don't want to stay on the "Southside" of Hampton Roads, if for no other reason than to avoid the tunnel on I-64 and the traffic problems that plague that partciular tunnel. There are no campgrounds in the City of Norfolk itself other than military base FamCamps (I know there is one at the Amphib base as I've seen it). Here are some suggestions for you... Anvil Campground, http://www.anvilcampground.com/ (Close proximity to Rail Road tracks makes this one undesireable) American Heritage Campground, http://www.americanheritagervpark.com/ (Full hook-ups, clean bath house, highly recommended by many rv'ers) Chickahominy Riverfront Park, http://www.jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation/parks/chickahominy-park.html (I haven't been here but understand it's a very nice campground) KOA.... These two KOA's are basically across the street from each other... http://www.koa.com/where/va/46111/ (KOA Williamsburg) http://www.koa.com/where/va/46182/ (KOA Williamsburg/Colonial) (They are KOA's, take that FWIW) Newport News Park & Campground, http://www.nnparks.com/parks_nn.php (Nice place, water & electric and dump station available, much like a state park) Chippokes Plantation State Park, http://www.dcr.state.va.us/parks/chippoke.htm (You'll have to cross the James River on a (free) Ferry to Jamestown and commute to Hampton, nice campground though...) Gosnold's Hope Park Campground, http://www.freecampgrounds.com/detail.aspx?id=547 http://www.hampton.va.us/parks/parks_and_trails.html (again, I haven't been to this one YET, but it's on my short list. I understand it's only about $10 per night for water & electric and only campground in the City of Hampton)

RE: Fort Monroe, Va.

Fort Monroe was an active Army Base up until late last year, it was closed by Congress under the BRAC (Base Realignment And Closure). A lot of people went to task to keep the State of Virginia and City of Hampton from getting full control of this place and to prevent it from falling into developers hands. At the heart of the base lies an old High Wall Moated 5 sided Fort, along with the Casemate Museum. Lots of history here, dating all the way back to 1609 with Capt John Smith from the Jamestown Colony. Google search Ft. Monroe and you'll get all kinds of info on this place. Some deep history & images

RE: Blackout curtains for looooong AK days?

I'm another one that can't sleep with even a small amount of light. I have Reflectix covering the windows in my trailer even when camping down here so that I won't awaken with the rising sun.

RE: outer banks

If you are on a modest budget and require hook-up's, then Ocean Waves is going to be your best bet, water, electric, sewer & cable for $42 per night for EVERYTHING is about HALF what Camp Hatteras & KOA charge. Getting reservations is going to be tough, it's a small campground and hugely popular and they stay pretty well booked. You best bet is to call them and see what they may have available, then work your dates around that, forget about holiday weekends as I'm sure they will be 100% booked solid (but there are always cancelations too)... Good luck!! If hook-up's are not something you need, then I would suggest anyone one of the National Park Service Campgrounds along the OBX...

RE: American Heritage/Newport City, Va. cg ???

That would be Newport News City Park... That being said, if you need full hook-up's and Wifi then you need to go to American Heritage as they have all the hook-up's. Newport News Park is water & electric only, no sewer (dump station only), no cable, and no Wifi...

RE: First Landing State Park- VA

Reservations in the Virginia Park System only means they will hold a site (of the type you reserved) open for you, but they do not reserve specific sites. When you get there, you pick any vacant site, they don't assign them...

RE: planning trip to Virginia

Pocahontas SP has water & electric and a dump station on the way out. Older loop has some great pull through sites, newer loop has less tree's and is very nice. In the Williamsburg area most of the people that visit this site seem to like American Heritage, it's nice enough as I have camped there. But if you don't need full hook-up's and you're into the Civil War stuff, then the above posts about Newport News Park being an actual Civil War battlefield is correct, it was called The Battle of Dam #1 and some of the old earthworks run between some of the campsites at Newport News Park, and they have water & electric and a dump station...

RE: Virginia Beach during Easter weekend?

It's a Holiday weekend, but not a biggie like Memorial or Labor Day Weekends... It's alsy early in the season, and not a whole lot of campers. I don't think you'll have huge crowds here, not this time of year. First Landing would be my choice too, nicer sites and better space between them as compared to the commercial parks in the area. Weather in April is hit or miss, but usually quite nice, it's supposed to be in the 70's here all this week to give you an idea. It can also be cold here too in April, but I don't think we're going to have that problem this year...

RE: Blue Ridge Highway Camping & Driving

You keep calling it a Highway, it's a 2 lane Parkway with a top speed of 45mph and as low as 25mph in some places. It's a nice meandering drive, and easy to do in an RV. Blue Ridge Parkway official NPS Website

RE: Virginia to Acadia NP

I think Va is a big state and you don't indicate where you would be coming from. If in the Tidewater area I always run straight up US-13 through the DelMarVa, pick up Rt-1 in Dover and continue that to I-95. Since I always use the Tappan Zee Bridge (TZB) in NY instead of the GWB to avoid NYC and the traffic, I have to exit the NJ Tpk around exit 8 or so and take the Garden State Pkw up to I-287 and cross the TZB. If you are in western Va, then I'd just run up I-81 until it intersects with I-84. I think the KOA in Brewster NY is probably the best halfway point, though I usually stop somewhere in Ct. As long as you don't put out any slides I think you can even overnight in a Ct Rest Area (though I'd question the safety of doing that)...

RE: Douthat - VA State Park

I stayed there one time several years ago, and can't remember enough to give a specific site recommendation. I do however know enough that of the three campground loops, the nicest sites are in the "White Oak Campground" loop. I also recall I was very happy with the site I was in, I think it was #5... I have some info and pictures posted HERE
