RE: Will you RV with $8 a gallon gas?

Insane ?? We ran some rough numbers and the proposed 4 month trip would have put us back about $15K. To fly to upstate N.Y. and take a 2 wk trip in a rental car to Maine the entire trip would be about $3,500 - $4,000. I love to RV but I've made that trip several times and with the $10K we'll save we'll remodel a room in the house. I'm doing exactly what our government is telling us to do. Again, have a safe trip.

RE: Will you RV with $8 a gallon gas?

We've actually canceled all our trips this summer. Since Obama doesn't want us to travel I'm going to be a good American and not travel. I'm just glad we got to Alaska in 2010 and had several memorable years traveling to nearly every state in the country. For all our RV friends traveling this summer have a safe trip.

RE: Plans for wheel chocks

Thanks so much to everyone for their help. I think I can put something together from these designs. This is what happens when you get the latest Trailer Life book and you start getting the RV bug in the middle of winter. You start thinking about all the projects that you were meaning to do last year but never got around to. Thanks again.

Plans for wheel chocks

Howdy, I thought this would be an easy search but I'm having some problems finding a set of plans for wheel chocks. There are some old links but many of those are now 404 and no longer available. Does anyone have a link or plans for home made wheel chocks. I was looking for something like this: Thanks in advance for your help. Happy New Year to All

RE: Goodbye to RV park WI-FI service

It sounds like I hit a nerve. First, to respond to a couple of the replies. We love to RV and we love the travel lifestyle. We generally RV 3 to 5 months out of the year. We pay all our bill electronically. All our financial and other official communications are done electronically. We have done everything possible to eliminate our snail mail. For many full or semi-full time RVers, sitting back and chilling or throwing another log on the ole campfire isn't always an option. Bills have to be paid. Taxes have to be paid. We like to stay in touch with our large family. We've traveled in 48 states including Alaska and I'm flexible for some mom and pop RV parks in the middle of nowhere but workable internet in Salt Lake, Santa Fe and other major cities is not an option. In fact we generally save up some of our business kinda stuff when we come in from the boonies only to find a VERY expensive RV park in a city with no internet? When we were at Mt Rainier we didn't have cell or internet for 3 days and that was fine because we didn't expect it. I agree with the comment, workable Internet is no different than running water. If its advertised and I'm paying for it, then I want it without excuses and lame caveats.

Goodbye to RV park WI-FI service

I’m not sure if this should be posted in the Technology Corner or General RV issues. I’ll go with the Technology Corner but my issue is more global concerning the general attitude of many RV parks. First, we are fortunate to have been RVing for about 10 yrs. A lot has changed in 10 yrs but nothing more than the advent of e-communications. Over the last few yrs , which included an Alaskan trip last year there is no single thing that is more aggravating than RV parks that advertise WI-FI only to find out it (a) doesn’t work or (b) you have to sit in the owners kitchen or office to get minimal signal. This is getting very old and RV park owners need to come into the 21st century. I’m a retired IT professional with a degree in Computer Science and I’ve been fed every line of garbage imaginable as excuses for why the WI-FI doesn’t work. One of the best was last week when a park owner in Santa Fe told me I needed to sit outside as WI-FI signal wouldn’t go thru our RV? I’ve gotten better WI-FI on the side of Mt. in Alaska than the Tengo-Internet in many major cities in the U.S. Having just returned home after 6 months on the road I guess my only point is that I’m about to throw in the towel and go with an AirCard or some other such alternative to WI-FI. What really ticks me off is I know RV park owners are passing along the price for Tengo or some other sub-standard Wi-Fi solution and we’re supposed to sit back and smile. The next sad song after that will be articles on RV parks going out of business and to that I say great. The minimum service or basic (hot cup of coffee) in 2011 should be functional Internet. If you can’t provide that don’t put it in you advertisements or just fold your tent.

RE: Parking in Olympia, OR - Capital ?

Yes, you're right it's easy to get confused between the two. We have been in Oregon all summer so I'm in the Oregon mode. Your assumptions were correct we are heading for Washington tomorrow. I was hoping that there would be some parking in the vicinity of the Capital in Olympia but it doesn't sound like there is unless I want to drop my trailer. We will probably just drive down from Hoodsport, WA for the day and take a tour of the Capital. Thanks for the tip on Hama Hama. Cheers,

Parking in Olympia, OR - Capital ?

Howdy, We're heading up to Hoodsport, OR tomorrow for a few days. We could drive down to tour the Capital from Hoodsport but thought it would be nice if we could stop at the capital on the way over to Mr. Rainier on Tuesday. The question, do any of y'all know if there is any parking for an RV in or around the Oregon capital? If we can't do this then we'll have to make the 60 mile round trip from Hoodsport. Thanks in advance for your help

RE: Where to next?

It sounds like you prefer cooler destinations. I would highly recommend the Oregon coast. Oregon has some of the best state campgrounds in the country. The climate is perfect and the scenery is spectacular. The following is a good example of a very nice Oregon state park on the southern coast. http://www.stateparks.com/bullards_beach.html Have a safe trip

RE: Entering Canada with a bit over the limit on liquor & cigs

This is one of those areas where you don't even want to go there. Don't intentionally or otherwise bring in anything on the prohibited list of try to hedge the stated limits. The few bucks you may save are not worth the possible results. They've heard every possible line and seen every possible person that thought they smarter than the system. They actually threw my father-in-law in jail several years back and confiscated every bit of booze he had in the motor home. Treat the boarder guards in much the same manner as the TSA at airports. They want serious direct responses, no jokes or idle chit-chat. Stop, shut off your engine, turn off your wipers, have your plate number handy along with your passport. You'll be on your way in a few minutes. Have a great trip

RE: Haines to Prince Rupert

We would highly recommend the ferry. The scenery is beautiful and southeastern Alaska is very special. We went from Haines to Juneau to Sitka to Ketchican and departed at Prince Rupert. We stayed a few days at each island and had a great time. In addition, I would recommend the ferry on the southern or return trip. After having driven 7 or 8 thousand miles it was nice to be on the boat for a couple weeks kick back and have a cold one in a deck chain. We had reservations for each leg and all the connections went off without a hitch. Our 2010 Alaska travel blog Go, do and enjoy.

RE: Eternabond "bubbles" question

I would ignore. I've got bubbles that have been my job for the last 3 yrs - This goes under the heading if its not broke don't fix it. See how it goes for a season or 2 and if you feel ambitious sometime down the road, lance the bubble and patch that area.

RE: Thought I had my truck, now I'm not sure

Bill, You have a couple things working against you in this deal. The #1 huge thing is the fact you're buying a truck in Montana and you live in Oregon. Right off the bat this gives the dealer a HUGE advantage. In addition if I read between the lines I'm guessing you're the type of guy that is either happy or not with a deal. Given the start of this deal I'd say the well water has been spoiled and this truck is not for you. Sometimes when I get jacked for something I find it best to just step back and take a few days off from the project in this case truck buying. Unless you absolutely need a truck right now I'd vote for waiting for a deal that will make the buying and owning experience much more enjoyable. There was a great book published several years back which dealt with the car buying process. It's called "Don't Get Taken Every Time" whenever I hear of someone having a go around with a car dealership I recommend this book. Good Luck

RE: propane valve

You could take out the switch and just put in a tee. If I were going through the trouble of putting in a tee, I'd just replace the simple manual flip switch. I assume a tee would draw from both tanks at the same time? The manual flip switch provides piece of mind knowing you always have a spare tank when the other runs out.

RE: NY, NY WalMart Boondocking?

I'm not sure if you've ever been to NYC but if you haven't let me offer some advice. The usual rules for RVing and visiting cities are not the same in the NYC area. First, if I had an RV and wanted to go into NYC I would choose a park that was in southern NY or possibly on Long Island. What you really want is easy access to the trains. I can't emphasize this enough. Under no circumstances should you plan on driving in NYC. If there is one sure way of ruining your trip and total experience it is taking your car into the city. Don't even consider it. There are some nice state parks on L.I. but you will have to drive through the city to get out there. Maybe something in Dutchess or Putnam Counties. You can catch a train that will take you right into the heart of the city. Take a minute and learn the subway and bus system. Take a LOT of money and have a good time.

RE: Truck Brakes

Not sure what you mean by "antilock brake on the right front brake wants to kick in sometimes" when I had problems with the antilock brake sensor on my truck they had to change out some sending unit in the rear end? Not sure if this is relevant but I figured I'd throw it out. Good Luck

RE: 2WD or 4WD for 5er Tow Vehicle?

FrozenAKJoe, Your 5 points are spot on. The only advantage of a 4x4 over a 4x2 is traction. If you're not planning on driving your truck in the mud, snow or off-road the 4x2 is the perfect truck. Naturally, some people use their trucks as work trucks when their not towing their 5er so other factors can come into the buy decision. BTW.. I'm always a bit amused when people have to have a 4X4 truck to tow their huge 5er and then say they like to do a lot of boon-docking. Traveled all over the country and Alaska and their aren't too many off-road places one can take a rig like that. All just my humble opinion - Good luck with the Carriage it is a very nice 5er.

RE: Did the Top of the World in the rain today

That's strange, when I made an honest suggestion a while back that if possible try to do the Taylor HWY and TOP on a nice day to avoid the mud pit I was quickly rebuked and schooled that the Taylor and TOW is always beautiful? http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/24913521/srt/pd/pging/1/page/1.cfm We went on a sunny day and the scenery was breath taking and the road acceptable. Maybe its just me but looking at the mud pit and the top of clouds thru windshield wipers just doesn't seem like a day at the beach. Again, just my opinion

RE: Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier trip advice

skipnchar and MosquitoFood thanks so much for your help. This is exactly what we were looking for. It sounds like either area is easy access to both National Parks so we'll just work on getting a reservation in that area. Thanks again, Gigem
