RE: Passing through Canada to save 120 miles?

When you're on the road and getting close to the fork in the road, you can check the border wait times on the Canada Border Services Agency mobile site. This has been a long-time service, and very useful. IIRC something similar was recently added for US customs.

RE: how do you carry kayaks while towing the fifth wheel

For us it's a Thule Goalpost and a Thule bar on the roof of the truck and Bob's your uncle. Our boats are 14'4", so too big to go inside the 5er or vertically on the back of the trailer.
A second bar goes on and I carry bikes up there from time to time as well.

RE: Looking for quad BH with private bath floor plans - used

That was our list too, and we ended up with a Heartland Greystone 33CK. It may be a touch longer than you want at 38' (bumper to pin), from my own measurements.
There are three bunks, not four, because it has an outside kitchen. The fourth bunk is a trundle bed so it still accommodates four. And having a slide-out, the bunk room is large.

RE: Doc Fees, What a Ripofff

When we bought our 2011 F-350 then our 2012 Hyundai Accent, both dealers tried to extract that fee as part of the deal. In both cases I said sorry, that just rubs me the wrong way as it's pure profit for doing what you should be doing as a dealer, and that unless the fee was dropped the deal was off.
In both cases the fee was dropped.

Ours just turned 25,000 kms today. It has been great so far, we really like it. It pulls the 5er really well, is quiet, roomy and comfortable.

RE: Put the ADCO cover on the big mutha

I just put a cover on for the first time, with the help of a cover-experienced friend. Now that I know the routine it should go a lot faster next time. And I'll also wait for a day that isn't quite so windy...
Come spring, my plan it to pull it off the roof from the front, and feed it into a large, plastic garbage pail and store it in the shed. The next fall I just need to pull it out and walk it from front to back.

RE: HUSKY 16K EZ SLIDER 5TH WHEEL HITCH??

I have one and it works well, no noise. I've used the slider once, just to see how it works. I can crank the 5er almost 90* without sliding, but it's bound to be good insurance at some point.

RE: Kayaks and 5th wheels

I find the racks on the truck work well -- easy on, easy off, and they are exactly where I need them when it's time to get to the water without having to move them around.
Having said that, I have considered putting them on the roof of the 5er but I could never see how it could be all that convenient. Now, if I were on a cross country trip and only needing them from time to time then it would be really cool if they were up there out of the way.

RE: Heated Mattress

We put the heated mattress pad on top of Memory Foam in the trailer, and under the Memory Foam at home. Both have been working fine for years, although with the MF on top at home it takes time for the heat to do its thing.

RE: Kayaks and 5th wheels

Yes, overall the kayaks are stable. I really need to cinch down hard on the diagonal lines that run from the mid-point on the Thule Goalpost to the tow hooks. You may get some wobble on really bad roads. That too was my biggest concern and you do get wobble if those lines aren't tight. The boats stick to the saddles really well. I did stop using lines from the bow of the boats to the bumper to improve the view.
My own preference was for the single post sticking up, rather than the Yakima version that is more like a Y. I thought it might be too distracting. In both cases you have a single point of support at the hitch. The Thule has a tightening screw to snug it up to the hitch, and avoid theft too I suppose.
The hitch receiver is a bolt on affair, made to fit your truck. Installation is a two person job because it's hard to hold up the hitch to bolt it in place due to its weight so you need a friend to help. Some of the bolts can be a tad tricky but overall it really is a do it yourself job. I bought the htich from eTrailer "65049 Front Mount Hitch - Ford Super Duty." I had to cut the air dam but there is another model of hitch where the receiver pops out underneath the air dam if you prefer, and it's also bolt-on only. Since this picture was taken I spent a bit of time closing the hole in the air dam around the hitch so it looks fairly original.
If there is one thing I could change it would be to have the Thule Goalpost angle back a foot or so in order to support the boats at a wider part of the hull. In fact, at one point this summer I saw one just like that on a truck the highway, going in the other direction unfortunately, where the vertical bar curves back quite a bit. I haven't been able to find out what brand it was and am thinking it might have been home made.
I hope that helps, feel free to ask any more questions. I can take more pictures this weekend too, if you think it would help.

RE: Kayaks and 5th wheels

Do you mean like this? You can install a front hitch for about $120 if you do it yourself, and then get a Thule Goalpost. I bought Thule saddles to carry two 14'4" kayaks.

RE: New Service Centres on 401

We also don't go in because they don't post their prices. Sometimes you can find them on the gas prices web site, hoping someone has reported them recently. It would be nice if you could google "401 gas prices" and get a list of prices at all the service centres along the 401.

RE: Canadian buyers - buying in the states...READ THIS!

Well said. I should add that for our last TT I was able to negotiate a US-like price with a local, long-standing Ottawa dealer, so everyone was happy. I didn't go there this time because they didn't carry any of the brands that interested me, unfortunately. They are a great dealership.

RE: Canadian buyers - buying in the states...READ THIS!

Yes we pay more, but almost 50% more for the trailer I just bought? I feel I have a greater duty to my bank account than some dealer who will more than likely forget my name once the ink dries on the cheque. I would have happily paid a reasonable profit, just like when I buy a car. The local guy wanted all or nothing so I gave him nothing. He had his chance. Having said that, the government did get the HST from me so Canada as a whole receive a benefit.
I paid a CSA cost in the US, which was something like $250 so the Canadian things were done. Now the RVIA is harmonizing standards this will not be an issue in the future (not sure of the implementation date).
The huge shipping cost was going to be something like $1200, which isn't unreasonable for someone to haul a trailer 11 hours for me. You pay that for a car and they can put a dozen cars on a trailer, so RV delivery costs aren't bad at all. I did the pickup myself, with a buddy, and covered the entire trip for the two of us for $800.
I don't need a local dealer to support local charities on my behalf. I prefer to choose the charities I wish to support on my own.
A dealer of a brand will normally be asked to support that brand by the manufacturer, anywhere. Sure, you may not get front of line service and that's a risk. Well, for the one year warranty period anyway and then after that you can use whoever earns your business.
I got all the options I wanted. The choice was the same, the prices were much better.
It shouldn't be that hard to buy a trailer at a reasonable price in any fairly big city in Canada, but it is. I looked around pretty extensively and it was tough sledding. By contrast, 10 US dealers were very aggressive on their pricing. And the dealer I bought from has an extensive service shop, bigger than anything around here, by far.

RE: Hand Gun In Canada

A number, probably a majority of Canadians, do not agree with Canadian laws on gun issues. However, they ain't the ones writing the laws.
Well living here in Politzania, aka the nation's capital city, I can say with certainty that gun ownership other than the long gun registry and its pending demise, is not high on the list of issues occupying the nation.
Canada has about the same per capita gun ownership as the US yet only a fraction of the gun problems, so you don't hear people complaining about it.
My advice, visit Canada, a land consistently ranked among the highest on international quality of life indices, with many top-ranked cities for livability internationally, enjoy everything this great country has to offer, and leave the guns behind. You simply won't need them here. Which is kinda neat. :C

RE: To Cover for winter or Not????

Dealers don't cover because it's not practical for them to cover so many trailers. They also only have to worry about them for a season or so, where the rest of us have to worry about the longer term wear.
I didn't cover our last TT and it did ok, but not without a few negative effects of winter. The 5er is getting a cover.
