RE: Leaving a 5'er or trailer in Az storage over the summer

Last summer we spent "off shore" and had to leave the 5th wheel in storage in Yuma...we chose an indoor storage facility, a pull through, lockable, secure storage building. The buildings are equipped with power and protected by fire sprinklers. The rig survived just fine, and no blistering sun beating down on the rig. I did leave lots of water in the black tank, covered the toilet valve area and all drains with a ziplock bag full of water (to help prevent evaporation), and left windows open. Monthly rent is not cheap, but neither is the rig.

RE: Rant on Costco

Have you ever been standing at the check out counter, money in hand, and the friendly clerk took phone call from someone wanting a little information....and left you hanging for 5 minutes while they helped the phone customer first ? How did it feel ?
I'm with the store on this one.

RE: How does glass and breakable dishes like to travel in a 5er?

We use all ceramic Fiestaware, we also have lots of hand thrown pottery...the only time it breaks is when I drop it....We do take precautions when on the road, but air bags on the axles does mitigate most of the road bumps.

RE: Securing a spare tank to my truck bed

Your link did not take me to a particular strap that you intend to use, that said, IMO, a strap is not sufficient. I felt that steel straps, holes in the bed, and bolts thru the frame were the right combination for me.

RE: Free WIFI & Cable TV in YUMA

I guess my question is: Is it really "free" or is it merely built into the rate charged for the site ? My money is on the latter.

RE: Yuma Rentals

"but we kinda like having the woodworking and lapidary shops available... and a restraunt right in the park... and the pools and hot tubs... etc... and entertainment coming right to the park... not just a place to camp..."
If you desire the close contact that RV parks offer, then the Foothills private lots are probably not your cup of tea. Socialization is a personal thing...in the Foothills, it's all about walking, running, biking and visiting with neighbors...most lots are fenced and gated with 1 or 2 rv's per 65x120' (approx size) lot.

RE: Yuma Rentals

orrenb2....With so many nice spacious private lots for rent in the Yuma Foothills area, I would never stay in an cramped/crowded/overpriced RV park. Go explore the area, see if it's right for you. Follow 32nd street east to the end and turn right. the neighborhoods there are nice, clean/paved streets with private lots for rent....just start driving up and down the streets looking for "for rent" signs.

RE: Pole Barns for storage

The metal building I erected on my previous farm in So. Indiana, designed for RV on one end, tractor on the other, one door for a future paint booth and 2 vehicle doors. The 8' overhang on the front allowed me to have the doors open even during rain storms. My design was taken to a building manufacturer, they made the "kit" for me.
Cross ventilation is important, make sure you plan for it, and install skylights to utilize natural light, in whatever building you decide on.

RE: Pole Barns for storage

Have you done a cost analysis between a truss type metal building and a traditional pole barn ? When I looked at usable space, I opted for the metal building/metal truss vs the head knocking pole barn wood truss system that severely limits overhead clearance.

RE: Modifying TV for heavier Fiver

"Air bags assist in the raising of the bed, they usually attach between the axle and the frame of the bed...when air is put into the bags, they inflate and push the bed upwards with resistance against the axle, whatever weight has been put into the bed pushes down on the airbags and is still applied to the axle, ie, the weight is still pushing down on the axle...."
Hmmmm. Not the way my Ride Rites are installed.
Ride Rite installation instructions
I do agree that they do nothing to increase payload....in order to do that, they would have to perform magic by making any increase in load disappear, and somehow prevent that weight from being added to the load placed on the axle. It would be like placing a ten pound brick in your hand, and expecting that brick to weigh less if you put a bag full of air between the brick and your hand. You add weight to the bed of the truck, that weight is added to the load on the axle.

RE: Dodge Dually & Kountry Aire

"Have the brakes on a KW ever failed?"....
yep they have, but when they fail, it's usually due to loss of air pressure. When air pressure is lost, the brakes lock up, the truck forced to a stop, and will not move until air pressure is regained. The brakes on my big truck are ample enough to stop my rig in the case of trailer brake failure, that's not the case with a LDT loaded to the max with 20k+ pounds of inertia pushing from the rear.
What happens when the brakes on a LDT fail while towing ?
I chose to chime into the conversation when it appeared the message that towing mega loads with a LDT was OK because someone else was doing it. A simple look at the photo's of rig's in this forum will confirm that clearly some trucks are out matched by the rig they are towing....
In some form, we all seek justification for what we are doing, looking to a forum for answers to questions is great, looking to a forum for justification, IMO, is not.
Bottom line is that we all have to be comfortable with our decisions, that we've made the best overall choice for the circumstances we are dealing with, after trial and error, I'm comfortable with my decision.
As a side note, I started out towing my 19k pound rig with the belief that my Cummins equipped 1 ton was capable of pulling anything, and it probably is...it's just not capable enough to stop it...to suit me.
Good Luck

RE: Dodge Dually & Kountry Aire

"No need coming on here and making fun of others trucks by calling them a "truckette"."...
How about calling them a "light duty truck" (LDT) then.
"The poster with the 3 axle 5er with disc brakes has quite a bit of help with his load when slowing down"...
OK, now what do you do when the trailer brakes fail ? They can and do fail....mine have twice. It's nice having 22" rubber on the ground and air brakes...makes me feel safe enough to handle emergencies. I prefer not to live on the edge if I can prevent it.
