RE: Hunting For RV Spots in Big Sur, CA

From the CA DOT site concerning Hwy 1: CA Legal trucks only; however, travel not advised if KPRA length is over posted value. KPRA advisories range from 30 to 38 feet.*(KPRA = kingpin-to-rear-axle). Truck Network Map of Central Coast I realize that a 40' DP does not have a king pin, however the distance or overall length is what counts. I'm sure that some folks have driven a 40 footer southbound (the ocean drop off side)...wonder how the passenger would relate their experience....looking out the window to a foot or 2 of roadway, then a drop of 100's of feet as they negotiated some of the tight curves ? Regards, be sure to write back...tell us how the trip was. Gemstone

RE: eyeglasses & prescription drugs

"$210.00 total".....for 4 pairs of glasses with progressive lenses and frames ? Your experience does not mirror my experience at Algodones Optical, where in '09 we spent $450 for 2 pairs with progressive and good quality frames, with 2 exams. Time for us to check out Best Optical ! Regards Gemstone

RE: eyeglasses & prescription drugs

I don't see where anyone said "don't" go to Los Algodones for glasses....I do see where several folks chimed in with what works for them, but offered nothing regarding the OP's question about "who" to use in Los Algodones. Thousands of people seem to to be satisfied with their experience in Los Algodones, for glasses, dental work, legal drugs, and liquor....and let's not forget the shrimp tacos. Regards Gemstone

RE: Class C towing trailer with motorcycles

A quick look on Yuma craigslist just now showed this: Motorcycle trailers. I second the enclosed trailer...I would never expose our scooters to the road grime/rocks....'specially after a $1400 paint job! Besides, the last thing I want to do is advertise what I am hauling to thieves. The term "pricey" could also be used to describe your scooters, why scrimp ? Regards Gemstone

RE: Class C towing trailer with motorcycles

Almost any brand trailer on the market will do the job to haul your scooters, we happen to use a 20' "Interstate" trailer. Get a good set of "ride up" front wheel chocks, either install e-track in the floor, or good "D" rings and you're good to go. Rather than buy new, I'd recommend buying via the want-ads, or craigslist or other online site. I see trailers for sale quite often that have been used once or twice for some specific purpose, then sold for a big discount. Whatever you do, pay close attention to the tires/wheels. How old are the tires, are they the correct load range for what you will be hauling (new trailers are famous for having marginal tires)? Regards Gemstone

RE: Question for Mobile Suites Owners

This web site: 5th wheel forums also gets a ton of DRV related traffic, lots of long time DRV owners here. Our rig is older, I cannot address your suspension question, however in general, I would spend lots of dollars on running gear, not so much on interior options, in fact I'd go so far as to suggest removing lots of normal items from your spec sheet... Items like bedding, entertainment systems, recliners, washer/dryer, coffee maker, can be purchased by you, at a better quality, for less $$$ than the dealer will charge you...usually what they provide is low quality, but at a high mark up. Not going to do any boondocking ? Then consider a residential fridge, much larger, less investment, easier to work on/replace than the gas/electric Dometic unit. I'd ask for additional coats of finish on dresser tops, the desk top, and any other surface that will get lots of use. The factory uses stain in their spray lacquer finish and IMO they believe that using less material is better....for their bottom line. You might consider removing as much carpet as you can stand, have them install something more practical, wood or linoleum. Good Luck to you, enjoy the process. Gemstone

RE: Tow vehicle capability

I pulled 19,000 pounds with a SRW, 4x4, 3.73, 6 speed...it pulled just fine, however stopping was another story. Was I over the stated capacity of the truck, yes...by quite a bit, but I was new, and felt that my mighty Cummins was capable of handling anything...and in a controlled environment, it might be capable, however the engine is just part of the equation. Real life driving is anything but controlled. I found the braking system woefully overtaxed by my inaccurate assumptions. Would I recommend the same setup for anyone else...no. If you want to tow heavy rigs, IMO, they are better suited to heavier duty trucks....more rubber on the ground, much larger/heavier brakes, and usually a multi-stage Jake brake all equate to a much safer driving experience. Like someone stated, "you'll get lots of answers", my answer is based on my personal experience, yours likely will differ. Good Luck Gemstone

RE: Can't drive over 55 MPH...

"That's funny, because there's a sign right on the wall at BJ's Wholesale Club that states they will only put new tires on the FRONT unless all four tires are replaced". I dunno, for my money, I'd rather put my faith in the tire industry...so far, they all say "install on rear". However if I want information on buying goods in large quantities I might give BJ's a call. How about Michelin...think they may know something about tires ? Regards Gemstone

RE: Can't drive over 55 MPH...

TireRack says: put them on the rear. Nebraska Tire: also says put them on the rear Expert Tire says: on the rear The Tire Industry Assn says: rear Uniroyal Tire says: 2 new tires go on the rear Tire Review ( The Tire Industry's #1 Source for News and Analysis ) says: This says it best! Tire Review Expert says: on the rear Need more examples ? These people aren't retired farmers, policemen, firemen, military, carpenters, etc. like we are, they are tire experts....why not believe what they have to say ? Regards Gemstone

RE: Can't drive over 55 MPH...

I wanted the New tires on the front but Discount Tire would only put them on the rear, which they said was there Practice. I had thought about an alignment but we did not have the problem until replacing the rear tires. They would put the tires where I wanted them or I would have went to another tire dealer. The customer is ALWAYS right, even when they are wrong. In this case you would be wrong....could be dead wrong. Read the reason here: 2 new tires...place them on the rear. Regards Gemstone

RE: 2005 Ram 2500 5.9 upgrades

I've towed all through the mountains of NC, SC, WV,TN and Va without one and did fine.. ....you may call them mountains, and it may say "mountains" on the map.....but real mountains are west of the Mississippi, and exhaust brakes are more than worth the cost. Regards Gemstone

RE: Diesel vs Diesel

Macktee....."in frame rebuilds"... refers to: rebuilding the engine while still within the confines of the truck frame (in frame)....vs pulling the engine out of the truck in order to rebuild it. Regards Gemstone
