RE: Article on NPS restricting access

If a person believes that the environmentalists have gone too far and no longer listen to reason, there is a sure-fire way to change it. That opportunity comes along in November.
They paved Paradise and put up a parking lot.

iPad/iPod Lithium battery maintenance.

Good article here on battery maintenance.
It's long but you should at least read the last chapter.

Same happened to us. I found replacements at Walmart, good brand names, UV protected.

RE: Coffee Maker

I like my coffee hot.
We tried the thermal for a while but it didn't do a good job.
If it's a cold morning and the metal pot is cold you will get cool coffee. Having to pour hot water in the pot before you use it gets old fast. That second cup is always cool no matter what you do.
Ours was a Black & Decker and the lid was fussy, a pain to align it to close properly.

RE: DSLR, Live View and RAW question

I too am waiting for someone to explain "RAW" in a little more detail. I don't normally use RAW either, but only because I don't understand it.
All digital cameras tweak the images in camera, light balance etc. then compresses it into jpeg. In RAW format it takes the image and keeps it as is no compression no tweaking. You do that later with something like Photoshop.
A RAW image can be as much as 15 times larger in size than a jpeg, not dimension but megabit wise.

RE: German Newbies want to see Canada - starter questions

LK, European tourists, look for different things from North Americans, when they visit Canada. I should know, I used to be one! .
Add a good laugh reading this... How true it is.
We're the opposite. When we go to Europe we want to see old building and castles. Scenery, no way! Scenery coming out my ears here :)

RE: German Newbies want to see Canada - starter questions

To see what campgrounds are open all year or at the time you plan to travel, the best online source is Woodalls.com
http://www.woodalls.com/
Click on the line that says "show more search options" then check 'open all year'

Great recipe search app for iPad etc...

I came across this great app for searching recipes online.
It's like a Google search engine for food.
It's free.

RE: How Much Memory Do You Really Need for Tablet

Depends on what you will do with it.
Samsung has the SD slot for a 32gig card.
My iPad has 64gigs and it's past the half way mark with maps & movies alone.
Who knows what apps are coming out in the next year or so. Never have too much memory.

RE: Canadian Fulltimers

For me , I would buy health care to cover the situation.
X2.
It's not that easy, it's not only about coverage.
After six months away the province can cut off you off then you have to re-apply, could be a long process before they let you back on.
Meanwhile you have no coverage.

RE: Foil Insulation for Windows

I put some on top of the slide, it's not as well insulated as the trailer. Every bit helps.
We also had some window sun screening attached to the outside with snaps. It blocks 95% of the sun but you can still see thought it. Installers will come to your trailer and do it on the spot.

RE: Ipad bluetooth GPS

The gps chip will work fine on it's own. The assisted part lets it use cellular information to more quickly acquire sattelites
Tom
I didn't know that.
The GPS is still a handy unit for older iPads and iPod touch.

RE: Ipad bluetooth GPS

But my iPad has a GPS that works just fine with Google Maps.
Your iPad's GPS is either WiFi dependent or 3G cell tower dependent.
Lot of country up here far from both. I now have a full set of Topo Maps with dead accurate satellite positioning.

Ipad bluetooth GPS

I have the basic iPad wifi and wanted GPS so I bough and tried out
DUAL GPS
http://xgps150.dualav.com/
http://www.xgps150.dualav.com/images/HowItWorks/smallDesign.jpg
It works as advertized, very accurate, small & portable.
I tried it out with a few iPod/iPad apps and had no problems.
Many apps are free, you get what you paid for.
Three apps that stood out were..
MotionX
TopoMap
NavFree
Still trying out the free ones.
Some photo apps will geo-tag your photos.
For those who say it will never replace your Garmin, Magellan or whatever, so be it.
It's for people who want to extend the usefulness of the iPad, the 9" screen is hard to beat.

RE: Web cam site

The site I brought up is also good for the world. Like a one stop shop.
Thanks that is a good one.
At first I wasn't impressed because it would not load. Turns out is was a problem with Crome choking on it. Microsoft has no problems with it, slow but it works.

RE: Web cam site

I used to look at this pyr site quite a bit, but with improvements in DriveBC, I tend to go there directly. Airport webcams are also a good source of weather info.
http://www.metcam.navcanada.ca/hb/index.jsp?lang=e
links a map with the airport cams in a cleaver way.
I like that one, thanks.
One of the cameras is a few miles from the cottage, nice to see what the sky looks like before we go up.

RE: Camera support after purchase

You're going from a point and shoot to a DLSR $$$
Why not enjoy the best of both with a Panasonic LUMIX, love mine.
http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gf5/index.html
Many people are better off with a P&S like the Panasonics. But even the best P&S is worse that the cheapest DSLR in image quality, autofocusing and burst rate (how fast you can shoot). And about 10 or 15 other reasons. And the reason is that your Panasonic has a sensor about the size of your small fingernail, while the DSLR sensors are as big as a postage stamp. Sensor size is the big factor in image quality.
There is a real commitment required to learn to use a DSLR however. The new photographer has to learn to think like a photographer. Where a P&S does all the thinking with it's grain of wheat sized brain the DSLR expects the photographer to know how to control the camera, frame the image, analyze the light and select a good composition. With a lot of help from the camera of course.
The camera does not make the photographer.
The Lumix GF2 has a large sensor, 17mm x 13mm, interchangeable lenses and full hands on override on all adjustments.
My first pics, no photoshop, straight from the camera. No flash.
