RE: Honda eu2000i off Craigslist!

I've also bought and sold stuff on Craig's List. It's a great, free site. Congrats on your purchase of the Honda. You got a good deal.

RE: reversed polarity on plug?

This is even easier than it sounds. His plug is the male end so it won't have any power when he is trying to fix it. So, encourage him to take it apart and switch the wires. It just isn't that complicated. He almost can't do it wrong. I say almost since there must be something, somehow that somebody could figure out how to do it wrong, but all I can think of is confusing the ground wire with the hot wire. The ground wire goes to the round peg. So, go ahead and take the plug apart and reverse the wires to the identical flat prongs. Leave the ground connection alone.

RE: Class A Diesel or Gas?

This has been discussed a length here, but it comes down to diesels are more expensive but ride better due to the heavier chassis. Since gas units are less expensive, for those that don't drive very far or are not that critical of the ride, they can be a very good compromise. The newer gas coaches have far more cargo capacity (weight limits) then the gas coaches a decade ago or earlier. I've had both and prefer diesel due to the quietness, increased weight limits, and better handling. Most of us that bought used higher end diesel coaches don't regret our decisions. The original owner took the hit on depreciation. Good luck on whatever your choice you make.

RE: dead house batteries

If you use the engine to recharge the batteries and you are sitting still (not driving), use something to speed the engine up from idle to a fast idle of 1200 rpm or so. The engine alternator wasn't designed to put out such a heavy load at a low RPM and will probably overheat, and may also overheat the fan belt. You will use a little more gas, but that's a lot cheaper than a new alternator.

RE: Help, where can I find a new shank ASAP

Harbor Frieght has trailer hitch parts at competitive prices. They just opened a store at 6205 Corson Ave South, Seattle. It's near I-5 so it shouldn't be hard to get to now, especially since Obama just took off from Boeing Field. The phone is 206 762 3682.

RE: Roof versus Basement A/C Units.

We have a basement air in our 19 year old coach and it works great. Our previous coach had roof air and it worked as well, but I'd prefer a basement air if I had the choice.

RE: Tire size variations from vendor spec

When I was shopping for tires, dealers told me that 265/75, 275/70 and 255/80 are all about the same size and are interchangeable. They also indicated the 275/75 and 285/70 require the 8.5 inch wide rim. Your coach probably has the narrower rim.

RE: Electric water heater problems

Lukewarm? If the electric element had failed, your water would be the same temperature as the cold water. You may have inadvertently opened the winterizing valve which mixes cold with the hot water.

RE: GMAC Insurance

Insurance companies can raise rates if they can prove to the state insurance commissioner's office that their loss ratio justify the increase. So, there isn't anything you can do about it - except take your business elsewhere. Another reason may have been due to a change in your underwriting status, such as claims or citations, or even a change in your credit bureau rating. In that case switching to another company could even cost you more. Good luck.

RE: Diesel loss of power

Besides a dirty filter (air or fuel), the turbo could be leaking. You mentioned the exhaust leak was fixed, which probably included the turbo, so that is less likely to be the cause. I'd recheck those filters again since that is a whole lot cheaper than replacing pumps.

RE: Pretty much dead in the water, need help badly :(

Sounds like two problems maybe. No lights and no click has been a lack of 'ground'. The spinning of the gen starter has been a sticking start button. Remove and clean all cables grounding at a common point. It our case it is at a bolt welded to the chassis frame. I also think Gale hit the nail one head. It has all the symptoms of a faulty ground or "weak" ground. Clean the cable connections.

RE: Norcold 640 2-way works on propane but not AC

Your frig is connected to 12 volt which runs the controls and light. You mentioned that you have 120 volts at the back of the frig otherwise it could be as simple as resetting a circuit breaker. Next, check to see if the frig 120 volt wiring is connected to the source. It could be as simple as plugging it in. Then check for a circuit breaker or fuse at the back of the frig. I remember seeing one or the other on one of my refrigerators, but can't recall just where. You could have a burnt out heater on the "stack" at the back of the frig, but that is unusual.

RE: Voyager Rear View Camera

It is highly unlikely the monitor failed. Think of how long TV sets last. I'd recommend checking your fuse panels. Most factory installed systems are powered from a fuse panel rather than having an in-line fuse.

RE: Water pump trouble

Good for you! We all do simple things like forgetting a washer. I wish everyone's repair was that simple.

RE: Usable voltage question

I think your question is would 12 volt batteries serve you just as well as 6 volt batteries. The difference between two 12 volt and two six volt batteries has been discussed here in detail many times, but I sense your question is focused on the voltage readings as the batteries discharge. Deep cycling is just not good for 12 volt batteries due to the size of the plates. That's why they are used for short bursts of power as needed to start the engine. Long battery life of wet cell batteries (like most of us use in our RVs) requires you to stay above 11.9 volts. A fully charged battery will give you a reading of 12.5, more or less. If you test the voltage while the battery is connected, then the parasite load will drop the reading slightly, even if it is fully charged. I have no idea if the rate of voltage drop would match the percentage of amperage left in the battery. Logic tells me it would be close, but I have no idea if that is correct. I suspect some alarms may go off at 12 volts, or 11.9, but some appliances will continue to draw power until the batteries are dead. It just depends on the appliance. I don't know how this would relate to lithium batteries used in RC packs.

RE: Battery Replacement and Cables

We have Optimas for chassis batteries. Just put in a new pair-- previous pair lasted 8 years: http://www.optimabatteries.com./battery_selector/ 34/78 (8004-003) Two in parallel. Each battery gives 800 CCA's, 1,000 MCA's (32 degrees F). They are maintenance free AGM batteries. JCat, listen to Brett. He's very experienced and gives excellent advice. I didn't go with Optama batteries due to the expense, but they are very good. Good luck.

RE: Annode Rod question

http://www.rvingoutpost.com/library/AnodeRodPic.jpg Also very good advice, but possibly a little misleading. Cathoid or sacraficial rods have impurities that are left behind, so when the rod is "half" gone, it could be next to useless. It would be prudent to replace the rod anytime you notice significant deterioration. They are not that expensive, and a whole lot cheaper than a new water heater.

RE: Annode Rod question

The threads are pipe threads. They are tapered unlike a bolt thread which is not. So the farther you screw the rod in, the tighter the fit. You indicated that the new rod has more threads so with that: you won't be able to screw it in to the same point as the old rod. As long as you get two or three turns on the connection and it doesn't leak, your good to go. Good advice. Couldn't have said it better.

RE: Help with a question about House batteries not charging

Since the house batteries are being charged by shore power and the generator, the problem is the alternator's charging system. It is supposed to charge the coach batteries first and then charge the house batteries. As hammer01 suggested, it could be a failed selenoid.

RE: Waste odor while driving

Under the sink is a stand pipe with a one way valve on top. It allows air to follow waste water when it flows to the tank. The valves sometimes fail but are inexpensive and easy to replace. The second cause could be a blocked vent on the roof, but that seems unlikely since the problem is apparent only when you're on the road.
