RE: Backing-Up with Reese Weight Distribution Hitch

Thank you, for all of the responses, folks! I guess that I'll just keep doing what I've always done, and just work at hitting that driveway at the exact right angle.

RE: Smoke Detector & Carbon Monoxide Detector

The CO detectors oxygen sensor will die in most lower end units withing 5 or 6 years, and will alarm to false positives. You should get more life out of the smoke detector, but since you can purchase a battery operated smoke detector for mless than $10, I wouldn't mess around with none that you felt was malfunctioning.

RE: 30 amp and 50 amp electric question

All 50a pedistals that I've seen also have a 30a plug-in. You should be fine.

Backing-Up with Reese Weight Distribution Hitch

I've read and heard in past discussions that you shouldn't back your TT up with a Reese Dual-Cam WDH. Besides the noisey creaking sounds, why not? Does the WDH make turning the wheel while backing less responsive?
I've got a tough driveway to back into, and I'm curious if pulling down the street past the driveway, releasing the torsion bars, and then backing in would make it better or worse?
Couldn't locate anythng on the subject n the Reese website....

RE: Water pumps

We turn the water heater and the pump off if we are going to be away from the TT for the day, but both are generally left on when we are around camp. We used to turn the pump off, but too many late night trips to the bathroom, where you had to come back to the main living area to be able to flush or wash your hands, and we stopped doing that....

RE: 6V Battery Charging & Converter

Make sure that you don't over-fill the 6-volt batteries. They aren't like a car battery that you fill to the "fill-ring". You need just enout water to cover the fins, or else you'll boil them over into the compartment, and make a big mess....

RE: Battery water level

With a regular car battery, to the bottom of the fill-ring, but DON'T do that with marine or 6-volt golf-cart batteries!!!! They should be full to just over the fins, or else they will boil-over.

RE: Honey Wagon Help Needed!

I've never trusted towing one (saw someone else's loose a wheel and make a HUGE mess once), due to the bad roads and soetimes long distances to the dump stations. Instead, I put the tank in the bed of the truck, and pump my waste to it using a macarator pump. When I get to the dump station, I connect a discharge "stink slinky" and tip the tank up, draining by gravity, and taking advantage of the extra bed height.
Since I can go more than a week with my black tank, its almost always just gray water that I'm hauling in this manner.

RE: Getting the best mileage possible

How can you drive safely at 50 mph? At that speed, around here, I'd be ticketed for being an obstruction to traffic!

Dave - Sparky is right on the money with his advice. Try to isolate, then look within the offending circuit for the problem.

RE: fire extinguisher - fact or myth?

I used to service these for a living. There is some truth to it. Just shaking alone wont keep it from caking up on the bottom. Use a small rubber mallet and turn it upside down to give it a few whacks. this will break up any caked powder at the bottom near the tube.
What he said!
And after it's 5 or so years old, toss it, and replace it with an extinguisher with a metal valve that han be tested and refilled as necessary. The plastic valve one-time-use extinguishers are typically low-value, single use units, which won't get the job done.

RE: Cold Water Heater

Here's the indicator I installed. It only lights when the element is actually on. This comes in super handy at shower time.
Sure. And this pops up just about the time that I thought that I had done every possible modification that I could do.....
Great idea!

RE: Just installed a Camco RV Tornado tank rinser

I'm still surprised that we need to do this as a "modification". It's such a basic necessity that the mfgrs should just include it on every unit!

RE: no dc power when camping

It could also be a poor (dirty) or broken ground, where the ground wire from the battery attaches to the frame. On my first pop-up, mine had rusted and corroded to the point that it was no longer grounding.

RE: GOLF CART BATTERIES?

If you are using them in a unit, and not in a golf cart, I've found that the secret to longevity with these is to not over-cook the batteries with the low-quality chargers that are built into the 120v to 12v converters that are built into most units. Get a higher end float charger, and you'll get much better battery life.

RE: Dumb Questions...Advice from old f**t

And even if you get some flak from some malcontent who tells you to "use the search function" or some other wise arse answer, remember that it's only from one person who forgot that he too needed to learn ythings before he became a know-it-all. Lots of great advice from great folks on these forums, so ask away!!!
