RE: SPARE TIRE LOCK?

I ran a cable bicycle lock through the wheel & spare mounting bracket, then around the bumper. Cheaper than buying a new wheel and tire. Even though the vast majority of campers are honest, there are still a few that aren’t. The cable lock won't do much for the determined thief but will deter the casual thief who sees an easy score.

RE: Direct TV Monthly Fees ...

I too got the $4 increase from Direct TV. I was moving anyway so I called to cancel service, figured I'd sign up as a new customer with Dish and get their newbie deal. Told Direct I was tired of seeing all the "new" customer offers while I got rate increases. Direct offered to give me some free movie packages to stay; said no. Then offered $15 per month off for one year; still no. Two days later got a call from Direct Customer Service, said if I would stay they would give me the same deal as a new customer. Told them no, not now. I'm going with Dish for a couple of years, then I might consider going back to Direct if they had some good deals for new customers. Might as well play their game and change companies every two years.

RE: What is the etiquette??

I had a couple in a rental RV wake me up at midnight trying to back into a space behind me. I looked out the window say they were trying to see using a mini-maglite. I put on some cloths and went out with a led lantern and five-cell flashlight and helped guide them in. Took about five minutes and they were thrilled for the assistance. Sometimes things happen and you get there late. I don't get upset unless they are having a loud drunken arguement while setting up.

RE: Water regulator and water filter

The pressure regulator I use is similar to a Watts. I don't remember the brand but I bought it in an emergency (had hight water pressure blow out a pex fitting) at Home Depot. It is a "whole house" water pressure regulator and I added universial hose fittings on the inlet and outlet. Usually I screw it into the RV Park water faucet, then screw the hose into the pressure regulator; protects both the hose & trailer. If the park faucet is too close to the ground I connect the pressure regulator with a short piece of hose.

RE: Yosemite questions

The fire rings in Yosemite have a built in grill for cooking. If you use your own BBQ you have to put it in the bear box or inside your RV when finished using it. If the Rangers see it out and nobody is around they will issue a ticket. When you check into the campground, they will give you a sheet about the bears and how to store food and other things that attract bears. No problem keeping stuff in a hard-sided RV with the windows closed when you are away. The real pests are the ground squirrels. I saw one jump up on a neighbor’s table and snatch a hot dog bun off her BBQ while she was standing there cooking.

RE: Water regulator and water filter

I formerly used one of the cheap in-line water pressure regulators. I didn't realize that they will stop the water flow entirely when the pressure is really high. When the water flow stopped in a campground I thought the regulator was plugged up so I removed it and reconnected the water hose. Almost immediately a water connection under the vanity sink popped open. I checked with the campground host later and was told the water pressure varied and could be as high as 120 pounds. I now use a Watts type regulator any place I camp. A lot cheaper than having a mobile repairman come out and replace a section of pipe and fitting.

RE: Yosemite--Hogdon Campground

I asked the Campground Host about reserving and using the "Handicap" sites since they are converting so many of the campsites to Handicap. He said you don't have to be handicaped to reserve or use the site but if a person with a handicap ID comes in and wants to camp you have to vacate.

RE: Taking day trip to Yosemite 2/4/12 to check out CG's

Lower Pines Campground has three "double" sites. Each holds two RV's with a minimum of seven people. Lower Pines is the smallest of the campgrounds so if you all could get in there you wouldn't be that far from each other.

RE: Davis CA area

The Yolo County Fairgrounds is about 8 miles away from Davis in Woodland. The dry camp area is actually more pleasant than the gravel parking lot with full hookups.

RE: Trust vs. Will

Even if you have an attorney doing your estate planing, will, or trust it's a good idea to know what it all about. Nolo Press has an easy to understan book, Plan Your Estate, that's very complete and covers pretty much everything.

RE: Yosemite Campgrounds & Bears

Here's a long answer. I stay a one or two weeks in Yosemite Valley in spring and fall before the summer mobs. Here are some answers to some of your questions.
Reservations for the summer are brutal. Be registered and logged on to recreation.gov by 7 am on the 15 of the month 5 months ahead of time, with your campsite selected and ready to reserve and you stand a chance. Have a few backup sites selected because they go fast. Here’s a link to a National Park Service site listing the campgrounds. If you click on the link for each campground you will find a link that lists the maximum length of RV for each site.
There are no hookups in any of the campgrounds in the park. In the valley there is a dump station in Upper Pines Campground. Every campground has restrooms scattered around. There is fresh drinking water at the dump station and at the restrooms. My trailer has small tanks so I shower at the public showers in Camp Curry or the Housekeeping Camp. The free shuttle stops next to the campgrounds and will take you to most of the attractions in the valley. You don’t need to worry about driving or parking. There is a good grocery store at Yosemite Village. They have pretty much everything from steaks, fresh produce, to prepared foods.
If you have a hard-sided RV, food and other attractive things can stay in the RV with the windows closed when you are away from the RV. When you check in at the campground, they will give you a list of do's and don'ts. Don't leave anything that looks or smells edible or anything that looks like a cooler in your truck. If you use a portable BBQ, put in the bear box when you are not using it. The bears love to clean your grill. The bears aren’t really a problem, but they do like to occasionally check out the campgrounds at night. The ground squirrels are the ones that are pests about getting your food. I saw one jump up on a table and snatch a hot dog bun off the grill while the neighboring camper was standing there cooking.
Feel free to send me a PM if there’s anything else I can help with

RE: Any Pebble Beach Golfers Out There?

Here's the link for Monterey County Fairgrounds Looks like its $40 per night. It's pretty much a parking lot under the trees with full hookups. It's clean and convenient to the major attractions. For most of the spaces you need a long sewer hose.

Olympia, WA Indoor RV Storage?

I'm trying to find indoor RV Storage in Lacey/Olympia, Washington for my 21 foot trailer. I'll be moving there in a couple of months. I have been doing on-line searches, but all I have been able to find is one place in Puyallup. Any ideas?

RE: CA Class A Non Commercial - Tandem Tow?

For California Requirements, a commercial Highway Patrol Officer gave me this information when I was looking into "double towing."
In California if you have a Class C license you cannot tow more than one vehicle California Driver's Handbook
Here's a list of the types of licenses needed from their Driver Deucation Cirriculum
Also here's a link for the latest (2011) Edition of the Recreational Vehicles and Trailers Handbook
Note the first sentence before the table of licenses. "License classes are based on the size of the vehicle you wish to drive or the weight of the trailer you wish to tow. No passenger vehicle, pickup truck, or RV may tow more than one other vehicle without a Commercial Class A license with the proper endorsement."

RE: Best Campgrounds near Monterey and Morro bay, CA?

For Monterey I have stayed at the Monterey County Fairgrounds
It's really just a tree shaded parking lot with hookups, but the price is reasonable, it's clean, and it is close to the main attractions.

Montery County Fairgrounds is on the north side of Monterey (Pebble Beach is on the south side.) Nothing fancy, more like a parking lot, but clean, close, and, for Monterey, reasonably priced.
