RE: Following Forum advice -Do you do it?

After reading for many years, the advice I received on the items below was spot on. These were items that came up so often, and the majority always seemed to be saying the same thing.
when chosing a generator...a honda or yamaha. bought Honda and love it
weight distribution.....equalizer.....excellent system, worked properly
surge protector....EMS....again, great system, does what it advertises
towing heavy...get a diesel preferably 1 ton....safe and relaxing towing for me
fridge wont light....purge air from lines on cooktop....bingo, works every time
battery maintainer....battery tender...relatively inexpensive and does the job
battery cutoff switch..install one and forget about phantom loads between trips
sure theres lots of other little things to take or leave, depending on cost, type of camping etc but for the most part folks on here are very passionate about what they do and hate to see others make the mistakes they have already made.

RE: Question on Progressive Surge/Voltage Regulator placement

What you are seeing is the remote read-out for the EMS hardwired unit. The actual unit is somewhere by the convertor and electrical panel as you need to plumb the 30A shore cord into it, then the panel and convertor.

RE: Very Surprised at RV show

The show in Edmonton starts Thursday. Some years are leaner than others, but there is always a decent selection from tent trailers, hybrids, tt and 5th wheel trailers. There are also a handful of 500k class A rigs, as lots of albertans snowbird in the south and prefer them. I also look at middle of the road stuff, but do enjoy seeing how the industry matures each year and technology creeps into our trailers. I honestly don't mind the tv/dvd/stereo equipment in modern campers. Also the HVAC and electrical systems are pretty amazing compared to 20 years ago.

RE: Jayco X19 Considering

We use our oven lots, so I wouldn't discount having one. For sure get a weight distribution system (I liked the equalizer). If you dry camp, then skip the batteries the dealer will throw in and go for good twin 12v deep cycle, or twin 6v golf cart style batt's. I am a pretty big fan of Jayco, and like their products.

RE: So whats with all the crew cabs?

With my first Dodge ram, the choice was quad cab or mega cab, and I didn't want a truck 18 inches longer. Now that my son has gone past the 6 foot mark, I sympathize with the space issue. I sat in a crew cab when family were out buying a truck, and decided the move to a larger back seat was due. Mine should be here in April.

RE: How long do most people keep their trailers?

every time our circumstances change, we changed rigs to meet the new demands. Depreciation has never been a concern. If we needed seperate beds for kids, it was time to change models. If we wanted hard sides vs canvas so we could camp spring/fall, we changed. The same with our tow vehicle. I read some very convincing arguements on here to plan for your next trailer first, and then get the right truck. Next rig will be when the kids no longer camp with us routinely (and that will be a very SAD day).

RE: HELP POWER ISSUE!! AND ITS COLD

Your convertor likely has one or two 40A fuses on it intended to protect it. If they blew, then you will have no power. Also, did you actually confirm by plugging something in that your pedestal has power. Is it possible that the GFCI in the bathroom or elsewhere tripped. It could power other outlets on the circuit. You should still have the 12v power from your battery, but it might not last long.

RE: My new ram 3500 longhorn !!

I just hope it arrives in time for a suitable break in before camping season starts. I will be in your neck of the woods July long weekend as we always book as site on Arm Lake. I just ordered paper owners manuals so I have something to read while I wait for it to arrive.

RE: RV Wholesalers - Delivery to Canada

I have never been a customer of RV wholesalers, but my camping buddy has. He saved about 10k on the purchase of his 5th from them so a fair chunk of change.
They had it delivered to Bozeman Montana, and this is how it went. Basically the transport driver handed him a clipboard to sign stating the unit was "as ordered". They wanted to do a thorough walk-through, but were assured it had been PDI'd prior to him picking it up so they were rushed along. They noted some deficiencies and took photos and brought it home. They contacted Forest river directly with some outstanding warranty items as instructed by RV wholesalers. Their rig is in getting warranty work now and they are very frustrated by the whole experience and lack of assistance after the sale. Their savings are quickly being eroded as many warranty items are being denied at this point. I understand this is second hand info, but if you are serious please PM me and I can put you in touch with the fellow. Perhaps it's a FR problem, but for 6-7k I would support my local dealer, or at least try to hammer out a smaller difference. My buddy is not happy with the process and I guess he didn't come out as far ahead as expected. Just my take on it and I have read many satisfied reports.

RE: My new ram 3500 longhorn !!

This thread is gonna cost me. I went to my dealer to inquire about left over 11's, asked some questions and went home with a brochure. Came back the next day, got a price on my trade in and factory ordered a 2012 laramie longhorn sb 4x4 crew cab. It's a lot of truck, with a lot of amazing features...and now I get to wait for it to be built. At least I can read the owners manuals online so I have a shot at understanding how everything works when it gets here.

RE: Moved to the other side today

Nice. I am thinking a 32 inch lcd tv, and then remove the cupboard and hinged door below and install an electric fireplace.....
No wonder it needs cleaning, your driving it around in the snow.

RE: Tips to make the pull out couch more comfortable to sleep on

Easiest and cheapest way I can think of is to add a layer of egg-crate foam cut to fit. For more money, you can purchase a correctly sized piece of memory foam from a matress store or cosco.

RE: New RAM Laramie "Limited" trim available in 2012 models

excellent....that's definately something I will have to ask my dealer about. I am in the market for a new truck, and I had been seriously considering the laramie longhorn so this is another great possible option.

RE: My new ram 3500 longhorn !!

awesome looking truck. When I have a spare afternoon, I plan to head to my dealer and see what 2011's are left around alberta, or talk about ordering a 2012 in the next month or two. Love the rear seat space in the new crew cab.

RE: Need help on my battery bank conversion

Will you really have room for all 4 batteries. I had the same rig, and twin 6v trojans fit perfectly across the L brackets. You might have to weld another tray higher up and wider than the A frame.

RE: Keeping Honda 2000 Generator Out of Rain While in Use

I saw some pretty neat plant covers at home depot. about 3ft square, green fabric domes to keep frost/snow off plants in winter. Might be just the thing for a genset in the rain.

RE: EMS Question

our display seems pretty accurate. when there is nothing running (just fridge, converter) at night we show 1-3 amps. Turn on the tv, some lights and your at 4-5 amps. Turn on the ceramic heater and were at 18-25 amps. If I just have a ceramic heater, and then something like a hair dryer etc, I may be at 31-32A, but it doesn't always trip a breaker

RE: why so few tt with front windows?

i think some manufacturers have stopped installing them to simplify building, which in turn saves money. they can then sell the trailer a bit cheaper.
