RE: Gauge and Lock problem on 03 Silverado Duramax/diesel

From what I've read about the 'cluster issue' I think that maybe the OP's problem with the gauges.
I had a similiar occurence this past winter. In Nov whilst travelling thru WA on the way to Yuma the speedometer was showing 12 mph faster than I was travelling, according to my GPS. I was thinking 'cluster'.
After overnighting in Ontario, OR the speedometer was fine and stayed fine for the 4 months we were gone. Except on the way back home it again started displaying the 12 mph over while coming thru the Blue Mountains and travelling north thru WA in the same area it had acted up 4 months b4.
After an overnite at Moses Lake, the speedo was fine again and has been for the month since.
I suppose it may be the start of the cluster issue or perhaps there's another Area 51 in SE WA.

RE: anyone use a bumper mounted bike hitch?

Thx for the idea and the link, ournewrv. I have 2 Curt hitches and trust their products so bought this bike hitch as well for a KZ Coyote trailer I just bought for short trips.

RE: anyone use a bumper mounted bike hitch?

I have a 4 cycle carrier with a hitch insert. I don't trust the bumper so had a fabricator put in a section of channel iron crosswise between the frame lengths and then weld a 18" hitch receiver to the cross member and u bolt the receiver to the bumper as well. Cost me $240 but worth the piece of mind.

RE: When to add pressure to air helper springs

I have Firestone bags and run about 45 lbs with a FW with a hitch weight of 2115 lbs. The formula for these bags is 1 psi for every 50 lbs of weight-I air b4 I hook up.

RE: Tire replacement time

I bought a set of 5 for same truck in the 2004 edition. Determined General Grabbers HTS were the best bang for the buck. They were the highest rated hwy all season at the time. I bought 265's for extra load capacity i.e. 3415 vs 3082 lbs for $126 from tirerack.com.
Presently they have have 40K miles on them and are wearing smoothly, perhaps at 50% and that's towing a 12000 lb FW for most of the mileage. I rotate them every 10K miles.
Just checked the current price-$158, but still a bargain relative to others.

RE: Canadians using portable internet service in the USA?

I use Verizon......$60/mon for 5 G's ...pricey but likely the widest coverage and got a free netbook with the installed device, on a 2 yr plan. Service can be suspended when out of the US and the 2 yr plan extended.

RE: costs to snowbird

You may find it cheaper to snowbird than stay home in the wind, snow and cold. We're able to get housesitters who cover the utility costs on the house so it costs us nothing in variable costs.
In Yuma utilities cost us about $100 a month for power and propane, which saves us $3-400 a month, the cost of space rent.
We likely save $400 a month on fuel, groceries and booze compared to BC. In addition, in Algodones cigarettes are about 1/3 the price and prescription drugs run 10 to 30% of what we pay at home.
So if you live in BC you may actually save a lot of cash by wintering in Yuma.

RE: SS valve stems

I had 5 steel stems installed 2yrs ago for TST TPMS reasons. My TST onitor was indicating 6 lb differential between the rear tires while travelling to Az last month.
After an overnite stop at Ontario, OR, I removed the sensors to check the pressure. One tire was down 3 lbs.....whwn I went to put the sensor back on, the valve stem turned.
I went to Les Schwab to change or repair the leaky valve stem.
Turns out I have the type which tighten from inside the rim and the fastener had backed off. Replaced it with the type which screw down from outside the rim so if the nut happens to loosen, it can readily be tightened.
So I bought 4 more of the same should the problem arise again.

RE: British Columbia fuel prices

Couple more prices for the curious
$1.32/l in Oliver BC when we left on Nov 13th
$4.68/gal in Jackpot Nv a couple days later
$3.76/gal is the best price I've seen in Yuma

RE: TST TPMS model 507

Problem solved-it was the owner's manual!
Manual says the tire icon for the tire with the low battery sensor is 'posed to flash.
What actually happens is that as the system scrolls thru the tires, the low battery icon will flash when it gets to the tire with the low battery sensor.
I didn't notice this at first because I had 4 low batteries after 5 months of use and taking the sensors off during the storage season.
The TST guy explained that the first edition owners manual has several errors and they have been corrected in later versions. I am impressed that he called me back, picking my number off his caller id, as I phoned on Sat and no one answered.
Thanks for the responses.

TST TPMS model 507

Yesterday I put on the sensors as we're leaving for AZ on Sunday-second yr of use.
Truck was fine...monitor showing all 4 tires with correct psi.
After installing 4 sensors on FW, the low battery icon was flashing, the alarm was sounding and the red light was on. Monitor showing all 4 tires and psi correctly.
Reading the book, it should be a low sensor battery and one tire on the monitor should be flashing.
However I have no tires flashing.
Anyone know what this is----more than one low battery so no tires flash?
Thx for your help

Snowbirds-Overnite RV Parking Hwy 93, Hiko NV

We'll be AZ bound around Nov 15th and would like to avoid the colder overnite temperatures at Wells, NV. Has anyone overnited at Hiko or know if if there is a suitable spot to park for the nite. Thanks.
