RE: Hwy 550 from Durango to Ouray, Colorado

And very steep going down the back half. You have to go slow and easy and you will be fine. It is narrow, windy, and one of the most beautiful roads in the country. Do it at last once--just give yourself plenty of time.

RE: Need help with buying the right truck for 5th wheel

Actually, you should be just fine in that range. It's all about weights if you do buy a 2500 you will be limited. Not all people have the $$ or space to pick any fiver they want and then get a truck to match. Just so you know your limits--weight of fiver, proper hitch so you don't knock out the back window with a short bed, etc. We have a long bed and pull the fiver in our sig just fine. I don't know why anybody needs more (of course a separate living room would be nice, a fireplace even better, an island in the kitchen would sure make cooking easier...) LOL Just make sure you will be happy with the restrictions and you will be fine.

RE: Before I totally lose hope (re: weights explanations?)

I'm a KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) person and think you are right on the mark. You can get real complicated and get to where you can't make a decision. 6000# should be fine because you probably won't be that heavy anyway. Unless you plan to load up the trailer for six months on the road you will probably not reach the GVWR of the Roo or Jayco. You may not break any speed records going up hills but as long as you don't try to keep up with the big diesels you will be just fine. Now that we are no longer fulltime in our signature rig, I am seriously thinking of trading down to a very similar combo. Have fun and KISS. Go for it!

RE: Forgot to close tank valves

Why sterilize? Why clean them? They are all holding tanks. Many older RV's only had one tank and the only problem was the size of the tank and that you could hold much more with differing needs with two or three tanks. Just use them as normal and enjoy!

RE: Rv Park Websites - Rates

I actually find very few that don't list the rates. That's the main reason I check on-line so take a pass on any that don't list the rates. I'm not going to take the time to contact them. Rates listed on RV Reviews are worthless. Too many variables to know if they apply to me.

RE: Trailer towing question

Consider the fact that some TT's have a GVW that is 2-3000 lbs more than UVW. Some have far less. 1000 lbs or so over UVW is a reasonable estimate even with water, propane and batteries and might be 1000 lbs or more less than GVW. Going strictly by GVW could eliminate a lot of possibilities. A well designed TT has some margin between UVW and GVW so, with a normal load, you are not right at the maximum rating for all your components. Different TT's are different. I would consider taking UVW, probably round it up, (if it says 6700, figure 7000), add 1000 and go from there for a working number. I agree that 1000# + UVW is better than GVW. Most trailers now have a sticker that gives actual weight leaving the factory as well as weight that includes things like propane, full water, etc. But I don't think you can get that figure anywhere but in the trailer. You still need to add all your luggage. And you will be way over weight.

RE: Opinions, please, on this 5er

I am not a member of the weight police and think they are way too conservative in their estimates. But in this case they may be right. Looks like you will be way over the weight and pin weight with your truck. Just look really closely at your truck specs before you buy. Nice rig, though.

RE: Theodore Roosevelt National park campgrounds

We were there a couple years ago in the summer and and the cg was practically empty. The park is not one of the more popular ones but it was very interesting.

RE: Oregon 138 from I-5 to Reedsport?

It's fine. Curvy but semi's drive it all the time with no problem.

RE: Celebrity apprentice Good Sam night

I will however not tolerate any sort of bigotry, racism or anything of the sorts on this site. We are all different and no one is perfect. If you are not able to conduct yourself on this forum with professionalism and respect towards others you will be blocked. I personally will not associate myself or this company with anyone who lacks the open heart for everyone regardless. The good samaratin does not judge he helps others. If this isn't the right club do you we all respect your decision. This is not a political platform nor a platform for personal agendas. We all just want to go camping and enjoy our life. ML There are few CEO's that will take this strong of position and I applaud you for it. You are taking Good Sam in the right direction and I wish you all the success possible.

RE: buying a fifth wheel should be like buying a car

Most of the RV's I've purchased were used and I have never bought a dirty one. There are certainly dealers that don't clean their units and I just turn around and walk out. But many dealers and individuals do clean them up. I'd say the ratio is around 50%.

RE: Which Equal-i-zer?

I has a similar issue when I bought my Springdale trailer several years ago. I called Equal-i-zer and they said to go with the heavier bars. They said it would make no difference on ride, give leeway in case I ended up with more tongue weight and put me in good shape if I bought a heavier trailer. Give them a call if you are in doubt. They are good folks to deal with.

RE: Towing a streamlined trailer

You may improve MPG but your truck can still only pull so much weight and is built for so much tongue weight. Doesn't matter how aerodynamic the trailer is--it still weighs what it weighs.

RE: Furnace fan runs continuously.

Every rig I have had has two switches. One is "Heat/Off/AC". The other is Auto/On. You want Heat and Auto, then it should cycle. Heat/On will run the ac fan continuously. That may be what you are hearing. Just make sure the one switch is on Heat, the other on Auto.

RE: Am I missing something? (NADA pricing)

I will very seldom pay more than NADA. Most complaints are that NADA is too high because it is the National Auto. Dealers Assoc. and they are going to favor high prices. I have bought mostly used RV's and never paid more than 50% to 60% of the asking price. Asking prices on used RV's--both private and dealer--are often outrageous. Don't be afraid to offer 1/2 and see what they say.

RE: Monument Valley RV Parks

I'm surprised nobody has mention Valle's in Mexican Hat. Quite close to MV. Funky, nothing fancy, sort of run down. But $26 a night beats anything else, including Gouldings. Right on the river. We spend several nights there and had a great time.

RE: Mt. Rushmore

Palmer Gulch/Hill City KOA gets the vote, hands down, for kids. More to do there than anywhere else and that is what kids want: pool, horses, ice cream, a lot of other kids. Rafter J is nicer, and I love it, but for kids--go where the kids go.

RE: Thinking of buying a TT, question re:electricity & computers

If you have to have your computers you will be better off to just make sure you can plug in. If you try to dry-camp out in the boonies chances are Verizon, et al, isn't going to get a signal. Even with electricity, you may well be out of reach. Plus you are really limited in usage. If you really plan to be out in nowhere you may need a satellite and that will be a whole different issue. My suggestion: if you want to give it a try, stick with your current computers, stay at sites with electricity, use Verizon or satellite, and see how it goes. Don't spend huge $$$ until you give it a try. No matter what you get now, it won't be right until you find out for yourself.

RE: WHERE IS MY WATERFILTER???

You say 2010 and have had it for six months. That must mean used. The previous owner probably had the type I have and sits outside by the cg tap. He took it the filter system with him and forget the wrench and extra filter.

RE: Getting ready to go full time!!! Where to winter?

Desert Trail RV Park, Tucson. Dogs no problem. 30 amp site less than $400. Great activities. On the edge of Tucson Mountain State Park so great hiking, biking. We snowbirded there for four years until we decided to move permanently to Green Valley, AZ, just below Tucson. The place fills up in the winter so you do need to reserve a site. Check their website.
