RE: 30 amp and 50 amp electric question

The wire going from the campground box to your RV panel is 50 amps, a full 50-amps, not 25. The main breaker in your RV is 30-amps, and each of your individual breakers is 15 amps. OK, the entire 50 -amps is available to the campground side of each of those 15 amp breakers, but if you plug in more than 15 amps, the breaker will pop. The 50-amps is not PUSHED into your RV, it is only available to the RV. Each breaker in the series, 30-amp main, 15-amps per circuit, will allow you to DRAW whatever the device wants. If you DRAW more than the breaker will allow, the breaker pops. Again, the circuit does not PUSH the amps, each device DRAWS the amps until the breaker limit is reached. With a 30 amp main, all that is available to each 15 or 20 amp breaker is 30 amps.

RE: Converter failing... I wonder

Matt has a good suggestion. I would go a little farther. Before starting, go to your local hardware store and get some electrical grease and small brass brush. Then remove each conductor from it's termination point, clean wire, apply some electrical grease to it, and re-terminate. Pay special attention to the neutral buss(white wires) in the back of the AC panel. Remove and inspect each of the circuit breakers. Clean with brass wire brush. Apply electrical grease and re-install. That electrical grease is anti-oxidation grease/paste used on aluminum wire at terminations, which is required. Not necessary for copper wire, can't hurt through. Dusty

RE: Mounting front stgabilizer on a class c

I put one like that on the rear of a class C/w an '89 E-350. Took it off when we got a new '01 class C/w an E-350. The gas tank was in the way on the '01 and put a pair of the scissors type stabilizers on. I still have the BAL if someone wants it, I can even help install it. Dusty

RE: generator question

With 2 - 120 volt outlets and 1 - 240 volt outlet, I'll bet that you can only get 1750 watts out of each of the 2-120 volt outlets. And they cannot be combined because you will get 240 volts. So you can only get 1750 watts for your RV. Dusty The manual shows a wire diagram with the 120v outlets in parallel. Also has a 120v or 120/240v switch that I assume puts 3500w to the 120v outlets or the 120/240v outlet. The switch is 3 pole double throw so I am thinking it either parallels the output for 120 or creates the split phase for 120/240. You don't see a generator with that switch very often. But with it you can get 3500 watts of just 120. Dusty

RE: Used Class C--maybe

My wife and I spent the winter, about 14 weeks, in our 24' Itasca, no slides. We do sleep in the crow's nest. And yes it is a little tight.

RE: Water heater won't light.

Is the thermocouple working? If not it won't let the burner have fuel. If the thermocouple was not working then the pilot would not stay lit. Dusty

RE: Trailer Wheel bearings maintenance

What is the difference between the wheel bearings on a tt and a car or tv? How often do you do the bearings on your tv?

RE: Electrical Issues

Let's keep things straight, in the RV world an inverter takes 12 volt dc and changes it to 120 volt ac. A converter changes 120 volt ac and changes it to 12 volt dc. Now if you are plugged into shore power your converter has a battery charger built into it. You could have lost shore power, or the converter could be turned off, breaker tripped. Dusty

RE: Anyone replace awning with a longer one?

In a C with laminated sidewalls, there will be specific places where reinforcements have been laminated into the wall structure for mounting the the awning support arms. From the location of the old awning, he will know where these hard points are located. Are there others, and can he find them? If the awning rail is not integrated into the wall-top extrusion (as it is on Winnebago) he may also be looking for hard points to mount a longer awing rail. There a way around this. We have an Itasca by Winnebago that we bought new in the fall of 2002. It has the dinette in the right rear corner with a good sized window in the side wall. The awing did not cover the window very well, so thinking that awing arms fastened to a frame member that ran the length of the top of motor home, much like the header in a wall in a home, I decided to put a longer awing on our new motor home. Much to my surprise when I drilled a pilot hole for the screws that hold the top of the awing arms to the motor home, there was nothing there but foam insulation. The fix is to take an allen wrench or bend a nail in the shape of an allen wrench, put it in a drill motor and make a cavity in the foam where you want to fasten a screw, you can use a vacuum to remove the chewed up foam. Now mix up some epoxy and use a large disposable syringe to squirt the epoxy into the cavity, you will need something to plug the hole until the epoxy sets. Tape will not work, I used a pencil. I did this about 9 years ago and it is still holding. I got this information from a West Marine web site. Dusty

RE: 2010 freelander

Over time the air pocket in the water heater gets smaller, given enough time it will completely disappear, this is why homes with wells now use tanks with a bladder in them. So the last time you user your RV the air pocket had gotten smaller, now it is as large as it can be and the pump will run longer to reach turn off pressure and will not turn on as soon. This is why I like to use a 2 gallon bladder pressure tank. Dusty

RE: Onan generator question.

Where did you find the info about the generator having 2 windings ? I have a 4000 watt belt driven generator that has a switch to go from 120 volts to 120/240 volts. Dusty

RE: Problem with furnace

I would first pull the fan motor and check the bearings. If your lucky they will just need some oil, or they may need replacing/new motor. Because the fan was running slow, look for a tripped high heat limit. There is a high limit somewhere but it may be an auto reset. If it's an auto reset then look for a broken/loose wire on that high limit. It's also a good time to check the heat exchanger for a crack. With the fan running too slow it probably over heated, that's what the high heat limit is for. Dusty

break away brakes

In the late '90's I bought a cargo trailer with electric brakes with a break away system. If the battery down you needed to charge it with a battery charger, but it held it's charge and never needed charging. A couple of years ago I replaced it with a larger trailer. It also has break away brakes. On this one the battery will recharge, if needed, when in use. But it looses it's charge when not in use, in a few months. Two questions. 1- How does the charging system work ? 2- Is there a problem with it, or do they normally loose there charge when not in use ? They both appear to have the same type of battery. Thanks, Dusty

RE: Plug for aluminum hot water heater

We bought our mh new in the fall of '02. The water heater is an Atwood with the aluminum tank. When it was a year or two old I replaced that nylon plug with a brass drain cock, like used as radiator drains. It came with a thick coat of heavy red colored paste on the threads. I wondered after I had installed it, if I should ordered it one size smaller and put a nylon reduced bushing in it, which would isolated the brass from the aluminum. I did not screw it in real tight, but tight enough that it has not leaked. So far we have not had any problem with the brass corroding the aluminum. We are snow birds so we don't winterize, and only drain it once or twice a year. Dusty

RE: Furnace burning to hot

How old is the furnace? I've seen older home furnaces that the fan became dirty and couldn't move enough air and do what your RV furnace is doing. Dusty
