RE: Another WWII Vet is gone

He didn't talk much about the war but he was always among the first to stand and remove his hat when the national anthem was played. I'll miss him.
Sounds a lot like my late FIL. I didn't find out until nearly the end of his life the extent of the wounds he sustained ("Battle of the Bulge"). Our sympathy and thoughts are with you & your family.

RE: Suggestions - Local Places to Eat in Wellsboro, PA Vicinity?

Haven't been there in a loooong time but the Penn-Wells Hotel has a reputation for great food.

RE: Interstate 80 road condition

Last time we were on I-80 all the way through PA was 2009. Just fine at the time, but that was then. I did the stretch from the NE extension of the PA Turnpike west to Rt. 15 back in late March. I seem to recall a couple of construction zones just east of the Bloomsburg exits. There is one rough stretch of pavement in Carbon County. The rest was fine.

RE: I am thinking about becoming a teacher--looking for opinions

I will be completing my 25th year in the trenches this June. I love my work and working with students is very rewarding. Yes, there are jerks but the great moments outweigh the bad ones and all of the high points in my career involve students.
I don't know about other states but PA has ongoing education requirements so "summers off" is a myth. Like another reply to your post, testing is now the tail that wags the dog. All we're accomplishing is teaching kids to hate school because all we do is prep them, test them, prep some more & test some more. JMHO

RE: Actors & musicians

To play professionally at that level a musician has to have flawless reading skills; most of those guys cut their teeth with other bands before coming on board. Pretty much the case with any of the big bands. At the same time - by the time you're of the caliber to play with Lawrence or any major group there isn't going to be much that you haven't played in some form or another.
The same holds true for the actors & dancers. It is said of the late Harry Morgan that he could read a script one time and that's all he needed. If you can't memorize lines or dance steps in short order you never make it to that level in the first place.

RE: Rt. 12 Ocracoke & Hatteras Islands

RWDIII - This will be our second visit to OBX and yes, looking forward to it. I was about 10 when my folks took us to Hatteras for the first time - in a pop-up. Wind blew the canvas all night and created some not-so-fond memories for my mother.
Belgique - thanks for the info; I think this is what my wife must have heard about.

RE: Down shifting with an automatic transmission

I've done it with all our TV's. As a rule I avoid picking up too much speed as I crest a hill. Unless it's a wide plateau there's no sense in resuming posted speed only to scrub it off again later in the descent. Often as I begin a descent I will drop to the next lowest gear right away.

RE: Route 209 in PA

The latter route your GPS is suggesting is probably faster than taking 402. If you're approaching Lancaster from Rt. 222 I'll suggest I-80 east to Rt. 33 south. From there you have a choice; Rt. 22 west is shorter but during day time hours is heavily travelled. HEAVY truck traffic. I-78 takes you further south then works it's way back north as you head west. The worst part of Rt. 222 is east of the junction with Rt. 73. Traffic always bogs down there but once you're past that it's an easy drive.
Lancaster has a great farmer's market (Tues., Fri. & Sat.) but parking downtown with a motorhome will be an issue.

We're tentatively planning to pass through the Outer Banks later this summer. What's the status of Rt. 12? Anything else we should know before we plan to visit?
Thanks.

RE: Tongue weight and hitch selection

The last thing a dealer wants is for the potential buyer to actually, accurately know what that trailer weighs.
Or know anything, for that matter. A friend of mine was in the market for a hybrid TT recently and I was tagging along as he visited dealers. Since he's planning to tow with an '11 Liberty his max. tongue weight is 500 lbs. More than one salesperson's jaw hit the ground when I pulled out a tongue scale.
On a somewhat related note - one salesman showed him a used unit; said salesman caught me eyeballing the trailer from back to front. He obviously knew what I saw and said, "Yeah, it's got a little delamination." Little?? It was nearly half of the sidewall!! Buyer beware.

RE: Aluminum Wheels? Upgrade?

I replaced our OEM steel/spoked wheels three years ago. Love the clean look that the aluminum wheels provide. I carry a torque wrench when on the road so keeping the lug nuts up to specs is not an issue. Easy to clean and lowers your unsprung weight just a tad (maybe not enough to make any difference). Aluminum also conducts heat better than steel so they do a better job of wicking away heat from wheel bearings and dissipating heat from braking. JMHO
The spare tire is still mounted on a steel wheel, so I carry a set of the original steel lug nuts to use in case I ever need to use the spare.

He posted pictures on FaceBook of him working in the garden and planting vegies and of him out on the boat fishing.
Employers are all over Facebook these days for this very reason. Keep your distance from this guy.

RE: Camper Village Cedar Point Sandusky Ohio

Stayed there for 2 nights way back in 2006. Nice place, clean. Park mgmt. was o.k. You're at an amusement park so it's never really quiet but that didn't bother us. You have to pay the parking fee on the way in but that is refunded to you (or credited) when you register at the office. The rate at the time was $72 a night, which is still an all-time high CG fee for us. Our kids were "at that right age" where it was just more convenient for us to stay at Camper Village rather than commute in to the park everyday. You get a price break on admission tickets and campers are admitted to the park an hour early. Not all rides are operating at that hour, though.
On edit: We were in the Lighthouse Point section. All sites are concrete pads, picnic table and shrubbery (not all sites have shade). Full hookups at a pedestal with a night light.

RE: Traveling North Dakota

If you're thinking of boondocking then I'd say Teddy Roosevelt NP. It's on our list of places to return to. May not be as spectacular as Grand Canyon, Yellowstone or Crater Lake, but it has a beauty all its own. Wildlife includes prairie dogs, buffalo and wild horses and that was just in the South unit. Lots of hiking trails. Not crowded at all - one of the things I value in a National Park.

Holiday Travel Park should meet your needs. It may be difficult to get a shaded site, though.
