RE: of all things to steal

When I was at Fort Hood Texas, we had an American Soldier who took a Trip to Mexico. While he was there he stole some Toothpaste, shaving cram a Bar of Soap and some other stupid stuff...Okay, via a long story, I am guilty of stealing toilet paper when I was back in college. I just hope the statute of limitations has expired for that crime.

RE: Had a ride in a Chevy Volt

I could see these electric cars try to run efficiently during mid winter when it gets real cold, like the past three days here as the temperatures stayed between -45 F and -56 F below, the average temperature for all of January is over -25 F below, the 3rd coldest January on record....This is a perfect example of why the Volt (and Leaf, and other cars like it) are not THE vehicle for EVERYONE. Just because they are not a good choice for you (or maybe anyone in Alaska) does not mean they are wrong for everyone. The driving my son does here in Alabama would be a perfect match for the Leaf. Lots of short trips around town. He could go a whole day (and maybe several) on one charge. There are a lot of folks where a car like the Volt or Leaf would make sense. For others, it doesn't (hauling a 10,000 lb. trailer up the Alaskan highway). The Volt might make sense for me, with its backup gas motor, as I drive more than 60 miles a day. Actually what might be best for me is a small diesel that gets 45+ on the highway since most of my driving is highway.
There needs to be MANY choices of vehicles because there are many different driving needs.
You can't write something like, "Well it won't work for me, so it won't work for anyone." The logic does not work that way. For some of my friends, an RV would be a dumb idea (they guy who lives in San Francisco would NEVER be able to find a parking space for an RV, let alone drive it around town doing his rounds.

RE: of all things to steal

Where I work, someone stole the old battery out of a vehicle parked in our lot. The sad thing was, it was parked there because the battery was dead. The really sad part was they didn't take the time to disconnect the battery, they just cut the cables, making the repair that much more expensive.
A buddy of mine got his van broken into in DC. They took his camera case. Not the camera, just the case. For that $10 case, they did several THOUSAND dollars worth of damage to his van.
Another friend got his classic Mustang broken into in Dallas. The only thing they took were the knobs off of his radio.

And of course that is assuming the price comes down.Right now, THAT'S my major barrier to owning a hybrid. You need a lot of "green" to go green.

RE: Most poorly executed scam I've ever seen!

No way are we gonna ship a three bedroom house, three bay garage tall enough for a large class A, eight acres complete with a one acre farm pond. Not to mention all the trees. Just think how high the FedEx quote would be for all that!

RE: direct TV complaints

I had almost the exact same story but was with Dish Network and switched to Direct TV. Seems like they all have their problems. It seems each company (cable or satellite) seems to be in a race to see who can provide the WORST customer service. I think the phone companies are in the same race. I'm not sure who is winnign that race, but I know we as customers are losing.

The "old" bright ideas did not have this issue. They were bright the moment you thought of them.Yea, but they sure burned out WAY too often. ;)

RE: direct TV complaints

Oddly enough, we are using Dish for TV and our cable company for phone. We were using our phone company for internet, but they really got bad, so we now have internet with our cable company.

RE: sounds like a stupid question but.........

It is only very recently that a few have shown up on trail cams.I see what you are saying, but...
The mountain lion is a creature that is going back into areas it used to be. Bigfoot has been there "all the time". We didn't hunt him to almost extinction. Finding the rare mountain lion on those cameras shows that they can find very rare animals. The fact that NO bigfoot has been seen with those cameras indicate they are even more rare than the mountain lions. So if there are that few bigfoots, then they really are not a viable population and should have already died out.
Again, I will be the first to eat my words if some redneck straps one (dead or alive) across his bumper and hauls it into town.

...he stated more than once he did not read the fine print....THat pretty much covers it for me. It would be like someone getting an Android phone from AT&T for $100, cancelling the service, and then wondering why there was such a high cancel fee.

RE: Trust vs. Will

I won't discuss any of the details, but my parents have a trust and they seem to think it provides for more of their estate going to their kids than a regular will. It is a bit complicated.

RE: sounds like a stupid question but.........

I'm just playing Devil's Advocate here, because I HOPE they DO find a Big Foot/Sasquatch/Yeti - how interesting would THAT be?!
The people who insist that Big Foot exists, have footprints - which is about all we had with "Mountain Lions in Lower Michigan" for a long time. The big difference is: here in Lower Michigan, you're going to bump into humans sooner or later - there's not many acres of "wilderness", as opposed to the truly wild places where BigFoot reportedly lives?? So I can see where it would be hard to find one; or evidence of one who died.....Oh I think it would be cool to find one also. Any new scientific discovery is cool with me. From what I've read, the mountain lion lives in areas just as remote as where bigfoot resides. We found scat and photos of the mountain lions. Are bigfoots really that camera shy? My relative made a camera that when attached to a tree, is practically invisible (he showed it to me). If bigfoot is out there, it will be my relative that finds him. So far, however, no such luck.
But if my relative finds one, I'll be sure to share the information with this message board.

RE: Emergency Kit- canned food ?

To the OP, if you're going to be off roading it's a great idea to carry a survival kit to include FOOD, no matter how much Doug thinks you shouldn't takea food along. In the story I posted the link too they didn't have survival food, but they did have some food along including a fruitcake, and I bet they were glad to have it. Also Jim Stopla was active duty Army and was in great physical shape and that is probably the only reason he was even able to walk out of there. And they would have done MUCH better had they one of those emergency beacon radios. No frostbite, no having to worry that you've just left your wife & baby in cave, and no need for food rations as they would find you before you got too hungry.
This isn't the Wild West anymore. We have a GPS satellite system and beacons that can find you ANYWHERE on the globe.
If you want to bring food along, go right ahead. However, if I am going to go out into "the deep woods" (or whatever), I will bring water, a mylar blanket, an emergency radio/beacon, and my mp3 player.

RE: Emergency Kit- canned food ?

I was writing about one of those emergency radios that use the GPS satellite system for linkage. Unless you are deep underwater, they will work and have help on the way in just a few hours. And they know where you are.
And I just read that some places will loan them to you for little or no charge when you go out into the "deep woods".

RE: Mozilla Thunderbird

If you happen to keep a Google calendar, you can use Thunderbird, with the add-on Sunbird, to access you calendar within Thunderbird. I do that and it works great. My wife is able to put things on the calendar for me to remember. It helps me remember appointments and such.

RE: Had a ride in a Chevy Volt

With our current mix of power generation, EVs are just as "dirty" as internal combustion engines. I'm not so sure about that. The "advantage" of the electric vehicle is that the power plant is more efficient than an ICE. Now the question is if that higher efficiency is then offset by transmission and storage losses. That bit, I have a less confidence in.
Electric vehicles are not for everyone in every situation, just like a Class A RV is not the best thing to use to run to the grocery store (or best for going off-roading). However, for some folks, for some purposes, the electric vehicle might be the best choice.
