RE: Upgrading to Flat Screen, have questions?

Supercub.....Here is a simple thing to watch for in the TV size you're looking at without getting technical and knowing a bunch of numbers.
As noted above, look for a TV that is pleasing to you in both picture quality and clarity. The next thing to compare is fast action (movement). Watch several TV's that are showing some fast action shows. The poorer quality TV's will blur the image as fast movements occur such as a car chase or running. Once you start watching for this, you'll probably see what I mean.
A Sony or Samsung will be a good bet. I know you want to keep the price down, but buying good quality electronics is always a good idea and keeps them from becoming obsolete too quickly. You may change your mind about HD and you'll want a good TV for that.
In a couple of threads, many have stated that HD is really not noticeable in a 32" or smaller TV. I would have to disagree with at least the 32" size. I have a 32" Sont Bravia and it looks fantastic in HD compared to straight digital when I first installed it.
Finally, I never buy extended warranties on appliances or TV's, but since its going into a bouncing motor home, you may want to get an extended warranty if its reasonable.

RE: Trans Temp Gauge

I had read codelid's response before and did the same thing on my coach. I added the VDO part and found that it made my gauge read about 250 degrees. In order to make it work properly, I would need to add a resistor (mine was installed in the hose connection on the Allison). I decided that I didn't want to mess with it and really didn't like the length of the new probe. When mounted in the hose connection on my coach, I estimated that it blocked about 35%-50% of the fluid flow. I'm not an engineer and couldn't tell you if it mattered, but I didn't like it.

RE: Ladder Brackets

Buy this ladder and this sewer hose holder from Camping World. Mount the sewer hose holder on a side wall in a pass thru bay. The full size collapsing ladder slides right into it, is stored out of the way and easy to access.
The ladder is VERY stable and will handle 300 pounds.....don't ask me how I know!

RE: what is this cable for

bo57Ford....If you remove the first overhead flourescent light behind the driver's seat, you'll probably find the other end of the cable marked DSS (Digital Satelite Service). There is also a 12 volt wire that runs with it. The 12 volt wire is to power a dome type satelite. Yours is probably gone, but Monaco also put a decal on the roof where the cable was located so you could add a dome at that spot.
The coacx marked cable runs to your power uttility bay. It allows you to connect a TV cable provided by an RV park at their power pole. You also have a satelite connection in the same utility bay.

RE: Norcold recall failure

These threads pop up every couple of weeks and the same discussion occurs. The actual units that catch fire are probably miniscuel, but the units just don't do a good job of cooling. Its a constant battle to keep one working well when the temps get above 85 degrees outside. I've finally got mine cooling reasonably well with some fan additions.
I know there are a few people who keep defending Norcold, but please explain their lousy customer service. I love when you call a company with a question and they tell you to call a local repairman. We all know that about one in ten repairman are knowledgeable about the units or give a crap. The other is the fact that you can't buy a new door seal without buying a door. That's the epitomy of an arrogant company attitude.

RE: Buying New Versus Old?

I've been on this site for years and always read the same things.
"My coach is pet free" (as you see the picture of the food bowl on the floor)
"We never smoked in the coach" (as the yellow stains run down the wall)
"I pay cash for everything I own" (funny how 90% of the people here own their coach - do your own count next time the subject comes up)
"Your a fool to buy new" (then you see a 1973 Fireball in their avatar that costs $2300.00)
Its easy to make some pretty bold statements on the internet where they can't be challenged. I think the majority buy used because that's why they can afford. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, except when you tell others how they've wasted their money. I bought one used RV over 40 years and hated it. I like to buy new and get what I want, not settle. Since its my money and I can afford to do it, please don't tell me how you bought some gently used four year old coach from a smoker with pets and its better than my coach.
To answer the first typical response to my post.....yes, buying new is how a lot of people got in trouble a few years ago and couldn't afford their coach. The reality is that those same people would have overspent on a used coach.

RE: Steering Wheel Table

Scrapz...Your coach wheel should support what you want to do without an issue. Just one caution. Make sure you're not depressing the air horn bar when you put weight on the wheel. When you're aired down, your airhorn won't make any noise, but it will operate the horn and blow the fuse if the pressure is constant.
I had placed an object on the steering wheel one weekend and didn't realize it was depressing the horn bar. When I drove home, I realized the horn didn't work......I had blown the fuse.

RE: Gunky Shower Drain

A LOT of the shower drains in RV's have a chrome perforated cover/drain. They just pop off. Pop it off and clean the junk out that is caught in the secondary drain catch, two criss crossed bars.

RE: wondering if i should buy a 82 winnebago chieftain

Tony......The mileage equates to only 500 miles a year. Is this the original owner? You said you're mechanically inclined and you will probably need to be. It may be a fun project to work on. Mechanically, you'll be replacing things that have just rotted out like carburetor parts, tune up parts, hoses, belts, moldings, brittle plastic and interior furniture.
The things that are more difficult to work on are delaminating sidewalls and leaky roofs. If those things are good, go for it. Its hard to determine a price on something that old with such low mileage. The best price test would be....do you think you could turn around and sell it for a similar price a few months from now.

RE: Lets start a positive topic!

I read several of the doomsday posts yesterday. As usual, the same people are posting about fuel price armegeddon. I had to stop reading, it was depressing.
I thought about it for about an hour and then realized that there are too many positive things occuring to stress over the predictions of knuckleheads. I retired in July and have taken so many trips in the past few months that my head is spinning. I power washed the coach undercarriage yesterday and lubed it. I'm in a hurry because we leave for 2.5 weeks on the 16th. A week trip in April, weekend trip the end of April. Week trip in June and a 10 day Alaska cruise in July.
We're not slowing down, I'm just trying to keep up. The average RVer can travel until about age 75 before it becomes too difficult. I'm going to get in every trip I can.
Finally......just before I logged on to the forum, MSN posted a lead story about the declining fuel prices coming soon!!!! Look out.....I'm going to burn some diesel.
Almost forgot....We were in Quartzsite last week. We camp in a park on Main St. I lost count of all the people test driving new/used coaches. Whole riding our bikes, we stopped to look at a coach identical to ours. As we stopped, a lady walked out of the coach and said don't even look, we just bought it. I think some people realize that they can spend another three years waiting to see what the economy will do or go on with living life now!

RE: Towing aToyota Tacoma???

I have a 2010 Nissan Frontier that I added the Remco driveshaft disconnect. I was previously towing a Dodge Dakota. It was a nice truck, but got HORRENDOUS mileage.
Remco only makes pumps now. They sold the driveshaft division to SuperFlow. The disconnect costs about $1000.00 when everything is done. I guess I've been lucky with my disconnect. It needs to be installed properly and I reworked the brackets some to make it more rigid.
I wash my truck several times a month. When I wash it just before a trip, I spray the the Remco assembly with some 409, in a spray bottle, from the fender well on both sides of the truck. As I rinse the truck, I rinse the disconnect. While I'm drying, I spray the disconnect with WD40, again from the fender well on both sides.

RE: Huge, COSTLY mistake, I should have fixed it!

FIRE UP....Do a double check with your insurance....I have AAA and had a $1000.00 deductible. The first time I got a rock chip, I called to see if I could get windshield coverage for the future. They changed my comprehensive ONLY to $100.00 deductible for about $12.00 more a year. I didn't mind paying that since they were almost have the price of Progressive when they started raising everyones rates a few years ago. Old FLow can kiss my &%$.

RE: chassis: freightliner vs roadmaster ????

Larry.....You may be missing a more important aspect of the Camelot. It comes with an ISL 400, arguably one of the best motorhome engines on the market. Most of the other brands (until you get into their most exspensive units) will come with a smaller engine.

RE: Hanging Blueboy on Ladder

I've owned several RV's over the years and always carried a blue tote, but made sure I found a place to store it, like under the coach between the frame. I've fabricated several setups for others so they could HIDE theirs.
Whenever I see one on the back of an RV, I nudge my wife and say.....there's Sanford and Son. Sorry....I'm also big on having NOTHING hanging off of my rig. I guess its just pride of ownership.

RE: Blue Ox blew it!!! Worst customer service????

I agree with "shoreco", a phone call may have done the trick. I always prefer to talk to someone in person versus an email.
I requested a price for new decals for my Hadley air horns via an email since it was late at night and I was thinking about it, but never got a response. I was upset so I called. They answered, said no problem and I got my decals in the mail, no charge.

RE: Sat. Reciever

There is a discussion on another website about the Motosat unit. The Motosat unit will not work properly with a new generation DirecTV DVR. It works fine for just a single line HD unit, but will not work with the DVR's unless you add an A/B switch at the control module or a third line from the antenna. The owner had a lengthy discussion with Motosat and they apparently aren't interested in fixing the glitch. I'm sure this will be a problem at some point with any company when you have DirecTV making changes in their software and have no reason to be concerned with antenna compaines that are not their own.
I had a choice to buy a Winegard TravLer or Motosat unit at Quartzsite a few years ago. The Motosat was about $100.00 more which was not an issue. I really like the cool like that reflects off the dish, but I felt more comfortable going with a company like Winegard for TV products.
It so happens that my DirecTV HDDVR (HR24 model) came via UPS today. I checked with Winegard before I purchased and was told that even though the new DVR's can run on one cable, they can't without the additon of some extra equipment (SWM8) that is not available with the motor home setup. The simple fix is just run two cables from the TravLer unit to the receiver. The TRavLer comes standard with two cables and a control cable, so all that is required is to connect the second cable to the receiver.

RE: Screw hole repair ideas

Use something like this Hangar bolts. Fill the existing holes with any of the fillers listed in the above posts and then install the hangar bolt. Use a nice cap nut to hold the A/C cover on. This will make the cover easily removeable, without damaging the wood.

RE: Rear Rock Guard

JimGo...I nave to back my coach up a hill into its parking spot in my yard. I have to lift the flap to do so. I added an eyebolt to the bottom edge of the flap and one to the frame. I use a short piece of chain with "S" hooks on both ends. When I need the flap up for backing up my hill or a campground with an issue, I just chain it up. Make sure the support chains/mechanism is not too inflexible as to prevent the mudflap from moving when caught on something.
