RE: New Diet for me...

So,whats wrong with caffine free coffee and iced tea? Most stores have their own brand of decaff tea bags and we can't tell a difference. I don't drink many sodas but when I do its caffine free diet coke, much caffine and my heart is racing and I'm flying, can't handle that! DH has brain cancer and chemo has caused high blood pressure so he is on low sodium, never thought I'd miss boxed mac & cheese and Hamburger Helper! We are eating good, but it takes a lot longer to prepare a meal and I still sneak a dash or two of salt on some of my food. Good luck on your new food plan-"DIET" is a dirty four letter word! lol

RE: Desperate need of low sodium lunch idea and recipes please!

I share your frustration, since I have high BP. Lunch is hard. I usually cave and just try to get the lowest sodium cold cuts and cheese, or make salads. Or eat leftovers.
Amazing that some "loer sodium" products will have more than another regular one. You really do have to scrutinize the labels.
Try the Mrs. Dash Fiesta Lime...good for Mexican Food cravings. I make quesadillas with chicken, red and green peppers and onions and sprinkle a lot on while sautéing the vegs.
Lowes Foods in NC is finally carrying more salt free things including their own brands of canned tomatoes, corn etc.
They also now carry Victoria brand low sodium marinara sauce, only 120 mg per svg versus 400 to 800 mg with other brands.
Look for Hunts No Salt Dded Ketchup...taste is very acceptable.
I already have the Mrs Dash Fiesta Lime, made some tasty pork chops with it. I know what you mean about reading labels. I found some Oscar Mayer thin deli sliced turkey that has less sodium than the luncheon meat that was labeled low sodium. Being on low carb we had been eating a lot of cheese-really miss that!

RE: Desperate need of low sodium lunch idea and recipes please!

Kidneys and sodium do not play well together. My father's cardiologist told my father to think of salt as rat poison, then have as much as you want. Salt has a lot of different forms, anything with the word, "sodium" is salt. Be suspect of all processed, (frozen, packaged, and canned) foods. I know you are busy, I would suggest getting a powerful blender such as the Vitamix. It will grind just about anything you put in and make healthy, tasty drinks. You can put a lot of fresh fruits/vegetables/yogurt without all the work into a smoothie. With renal problems, you have to watch protein intake as well. I would consult with the nutritionist at the oncologist's office. Good luck! I am sending prayers your way.
He has high protein levels too,but its not from what he eats but from one of his cancer meds, only 4% of the people on Avastin has this side effect and unfortunately he is one of them!

RE: Desperate need of low sodium lunch idea and recipes please!

I made the Creamy Italian Salad dressing last night from this site,it was very tasty, didn't miss the salt on the salad or in the dressing and hubby couldn't believe I made it! I also found some good recipes on the Mayo Clinic website, lol who would have thought at my age I'd have to learn to cook all over again!
I've been getting this newsletter,LowSodiumCooking.com, for years......Lots of great ideas and recipes!
I never add any salt to my cooking, or meals, though I don't go crazy avoiding it either. There is usually plenty in most processed foods to begin with.
Something to think about too.....
The iodine in salt is good for you, so you shouldn't avoid it, with the non-iodized salts products out there. I forget just what we need it for, but we do....so some salt is actually good for us:)
Good luck with the LSC site, the guy that runs it is very knowledgeable, and helpful.:)

RE: Crockpot receipes

Bake Potato wrapped in foil. Place on bottom of crock pot. Season chicken leg and thigh pieces that are hooked together and lay on top of wrapped potatoes. Do Not Add Any Liquid!!! Cook about 6 hours on high. Potatoes taste like restaurant style and chicken taste like rotisserie. Delicious. I use BBQ rub on my chicken. So easy for camping.
This sounds good and easy,my dh was recently put on low sodium so a good quick dish I could cook for us. thanks!

We have been on low carb but the high blood pressure is due to his chemo and Avastin IV,if not soon corrected he could have renal failure,so we are listening to the dr and following his instructions.

Thanks my dh has cancer and we spend on average 4 days a week at doctors,so no time for a dietician! It took a lot longer to buy groceries today, reading all those labels and I got right many fresh veggies.

Desperate need of low sodium lunch idea and recipes please!

My hubby's cancer drugs has made his blood pressure go sky high,so in addition to changing his blood pressure meds he has been put on a low sodium diet. I have salt free butter, low sodium peanut butter,Mortons no salt, several Mrs Dash no salt seasonings and can manage breakfast and dinner pretty well, have problems with lunch as lunch meats, hot dogs and pizza are out. You can only eat so much tuna salad, chicken salad, banana sandwiches and PB&J's,appreciate any and all help!

RE: Why do many restaurants make unsatisfactory meals ?

I do complain if we get bad service or bad food, its one thing if you have a bad meal at a friends house but entirely different when you have to pay for what you expect will be a good meal. If I'm not satisfied and/or can't find anyone in restaurant to complain to then I come home, get on the computer and email corporate. I often get coupons for free meals, sometimes for both of us,they do like to hear from you. I also compliment the server and leave a good tip when the service is good and also have sent compliments on good food to the restaurants website.

RE: I'm bragging - taking off weight !

I sometimes think losing weight is actually easier than keeping it off. Have lost so much over the years, but it keeps finding me again! Started on low carb last year the week before Easter I lost 45 lbs but found out the end of Sept that dh has a maglinant brain tumor. So,still try to keep it low carb but right now whatever he wants to eat he gets. I haven't gained or lost since then but not stressing it now, hope to lose about 20 more eventually. We had pizza for lunch,he eats the whole slice with the crust,I only eat the toppings,so we have found ways to please both of us. Good luck with your weight lost!
