RE: 2005 Chevy 2500HD 8.1 Litre

We had an 03 gmc 3/4 ton with the 8.1 and the Allison transmission and it was an great tow vehicle however it was a short bed which came with the smaller gas tank (21 gal I think it was, not much range) and it was very thirsty, only got around 5-7 mpg towing a fifth wheel and not much better towing the TT before that. It is an awesome combo if you can keep feeding it gas. There was not that many 8.1 in the PU trucks, I had ordered mine at the time. They used the 8.1 motors in the motor home chassis until they discontinued production a few years back. The 8.1 big block 8 is as close to a diesel as you will get. Always had more than enough power, Allison Transmission was always smooth and the tow haul was great, never had any mechanical breakdowns. Good luck

RE: Should c-pap settings be reevaluated occasionally?

I am not a doctor, but my ENT told me that unless you have a large weight change the settings or pressure will not change with another sleep study, I have had the same machine with the same settings for over 5 years now. That’s what my guy said anyway. You may need to have your machine checked or calibrated but your pressure settings should not change unless you do.

RE: Would you Wax your RV?

We have a 36 foot 5th wheel and I wax it two times a year and do the front cap before any long trips for bug control, I do it in stages, the front and back one day, one side another day and the last side on another day, has worked well but it is a huge job, I just take my time depending on the weather and how I am feeling, I do it mid season here in new England and again in oct before I put it away for the year. As I get older I am not sure I will be able to keep up to that plan but so far I have.

RE: I wonder Why

I guess you have never tried to go into a large city or park at a hot spot for eating with a motorhome, try seeing the arch in st louis with a 30 foot motorhome you cant, people like an easier way to get around once in camp as well as not having to pack the motorhome up to go to the store to get bread ,milk or other supplies

RE: Finest Fiver made?

Been hashed over many times. Changes over time.
New Horizons, Teton (no longer made), Newmar, DRV (Mobile Suites), HR Presidential.
Bet others can add more.
I would add NUWA, the Discover America Line, or the Champagne line. We have been very happy with our DA, keep in mind that you are talking about units that are made and warranted for full time use, many units are manufactured and stated that they are for recreation use only not for full time living.

RE: Stupid Question

I would not have a problem living in our 5th wheel and still working in fact we do it everysummer from the beach. The problem for us is that we are in the northeast and the winters can be hard , our trailer is 4 season but I dont think i would want to deal with water lines and propane all winter. If I had a job in a warmer state I would do it in a heart beat , less taxes and up keep without having the stix house , hey do what you feel is right dont worry about others, or what to tell them. The only thing to think about is what your going to do when you can no longer travel we all have stop at some point. good luck

RE: New to 5th Wheel - Need a TV

Any chevy or GMC with the 8.1 allison combo is a great truck , the draw back is they are poor on mpg. I had a gmc with the 8.1 and the allison trany, that was the perfect tv other than the amount of gas i used to use.

RE: Safe CT rest stop for over night in March

Not much open that time of year,a few campgrounds along I95(Aces High is one and the KOA in mystic i think is another in CT) but It doesnt sound like your coming that way ,If your coming down 495 in mass Normandy farms campground is open that time of year at least this year they are next year they are not going to be open all winter. I also think there is a no overnight parking law in the CT rest areas, You may want to look at Walmarts along your way until you get south. The last time I went south that time of year we just took a fast nap in the truck at a truck stop and back on the road to warmer states. Not sure what your route is , not sure how your between Northern NY and CT heading south from maine? have a safe trip.

RE: MPG Pulling 5th wheel with F150 Eco Boost

It is still a 1/2 ton PU, pin weight is why 1/2 tons have a hard time with 5th wheels. 3.5L and 5th wheel really ? , that just doesnt sound like it will work no matter what ford says.

RE: air for tires

On board compressor, portable compressor, or a co2 set up, that’s what most have. I have both a portable compressor and the co 2 for the higher-pressure tires. The small portable compressors have a hard time with pressures over 100 psi.

RE: Ecoboost question

Ford Ecoboost is a few $$$$ and it is still a 1/2 ton PU truck, if you are going to tow at the max rated weight of a 1/2 which will be the least MPG why not go with a 3/4 ton ?

RE: RV Protocol - Unwritten Rules of Conduct

Mostly all of it is just good common sense, treat others and thier things as you would like them to treat you and yours . Please if you have children or pets , watch them , keep them on your site ,I have raised my children and dont care to have other people children in my site. Dont get me wrong I love my kids , but I have done my time as far a watching children.

RE: Motor Home vs Car Traveling Expenses

If you have to analyze the cost dont do it. It is a losing proposition right from the start. Most people that own an rv no matter what it is dont have it because it is a cheap way to travel , it is cheaper by the day after the investment but you will never have any resale or return on any RV. Do it for the life style , go where you want when you want, stay if you like go if you dont see the country and meet lots of wonderful people.Thats more whats its about than cost .good luck

RE: how many miles in a day's trip? (first time out)

You will find 600 miles a very long day. We do maybe 350 and that is it once your on road. By the time you get packed up hit the road ,stop for lunch, fuel and find a place to Stay at the end of the day 600 miles is a lot at least for us. Take your time and enjoy the trip.
