RE: need help question about water pump!!!

There is usually a cheap plastic check valve under that screen. If the screen is pushed in it will keep the check valve open. A leaking one can empty a fresh water tank overnight! Don't ask! I finally got sick of replacing the things and took it out, just picked up a hose fitting with a manual valve. That along with a gauge and a quick disconnect are now permanent parts of my fresh water connection.

RE: Secure Storage

I cannot store at home either, but after seeing the cost and "security" at commercial storage lots I went searching for options. For more than 10 years we have stored truck and trailer in a steel building on a farm 12 miles from home. Inside, secure, we have a key, and the cost is half of an outside commercial lot.

RE: Random Newbie Questions

One more thing, whether or not you use chemicals, the secret to black tank management is water and plenty of it. When we are making short stops and want to dump the black tank more frequently, we use a dishpan in the kitchen and dump it in the toilet. That keeps the grey tank from filling to fast as well. Just make sure all the silverware is out of the dishpan!

RE: Random Newbie Questions

McKesh mirrors will fit virtually any truck and they are best towing mirrors I ever found. Used them for years with box trailers and fivers. Don't need them anymore - see sig. We use Aqua Kem in the black tank. Have used it for years as well and never had any issues. Tank sensors work fine and we live in the fiver 4 to 7 months out of the year. I bought a box of 8 ounce bottles, used them and now I buy the gallon jugs and refill the small bottles, put a bottle in every time I dump. Any TP will work as long as it dissolves easily, put a sheet in a bowl and see how fast it disolves, then pick the best. As noted, keep the black tank drain closed until over 3/4 full before dumping. When we are stationary I leave the grey tanks open, then a day or two before dumping the black tank I close the grey valves. Then I dump the black first and use the grey tanks to flush out the sewer hose. Enjoy!

RE: Question About Slide Toppers

Yup, just run the slides in and dump the water. Some people put a beach ball up there if they are stationary for long periods. We never bothered. Never any issues with wind either, once in a great while they will flutter, no big deal. Would not be without them, they make the inside considerably cooler on hot, sunny days.

RE: RV Repair near Chicago?

We have had good service from Ehrhardt's in Des Plaines. Talk to Tim or David. They are a straight up honest dealer.

Escapees has an RV Accessories For Sale forum. You do not need to be a member to post.

RE: What do you do?

When pulling the trailer, I prefer to just slow down however much it takes to help the on-ramp folks get on the highway. If I move over to the left lane, sometimes it takes a while to find a hole to move back to the right lane. If I move over and the merging car decides to hang there to my right they will find me coming ever so slowly back over into the right lane, moves them every time! Sometimes it pays to be big enough to be a bully.

RE: What do you do?

I always try to move over when there are cars coming down an on ramp, sometimes the folks coming up behind me are PO'ed, but that is just tough. I've had jerks come right out into the traffic lane without using the acceleration ramp. One of the reasons I invested in a serious set of air horns!

RE: What is boondocking and how to do this.

Although we do not boondock, most people seem to use Bureau of Land Management (BLM) areas where dry camping is available.

RE: Sewer Hose Freezing

Get a support slinky to keep the hose on an incline from valve to dump point - or, keep your valves closed until you are ready to dump everything. NEVER leave your black tank valve open, even if you stay hooked up. Keep it closed until it is at least 3/4 full, full is better for flushing solids out of the tank. If it is just getting cold at night and your gray valves are open you can leave a trickle of water running in the sink and that will keep everything from freezing, in and out. When we are parked long term we leave the gray water valves open. A day or two before it is time to dump the black tank I close the gray valves and let those tanks fill as well, then I can dump the black and use the gray water to flush out the dump hose.

RE: Campground Prices

Look into Passport America, pays for itself pretty quickly. Don't really keep track, but we rarely pay much more than $20 per night, with a few exceptions.

RE: Class A RV broken mirror

You might try Colaw RV Salvage they have a huge field of full of RVs that they part out. Might get lucky.

RE: Sun covers for tires

Are ST tires more susceptible to cracking? Both my vehicles sit outside 24/7 and I always wear the tires out before they crack. The issue is tires that sit in the sun and don't move regularly. When you drive your car (or tow your trailer) the rubber flexes and keeps the protective chemicals active (obviously I am not a tire engineer so I don't know the terminology). When a tire sits the suns UV rays "dry out" the outer surface, reducing the life span - how much? Who knows. As mentioned, our slides shade the fiver tires, but I do put covers on the truck when it sits for three months in AZ.

RE: 5th Wheel Tripod Stabalizers?

We use it when we are parked for three months in AZ, otherwise I never bother. It does make the fiver less 'bouncy". With it there is no movement at all, without it I can feel the DW moving around in the bedroom when I am sitting in the back, no big deal though. Our fiver is a bit unique as the BigFoot jacks in the front are closer together than optimal, due to the configuration they had to be installed inside the frame rails, which are already narrow due to the dual wheels.

RE: simple question tire replacement

Michelin XPS Ribs - 235/85R16 Here is Michelin's weight chart for RVs Our fiver runs about 18,500 lb. loaded, (20k GVWR, 3,500 lb. pin wt.). Two 9,000 lb. axles with duals (eight tires). We ran over 50k miles on the same size B F Goodrich LTs and have over 10k on the Michelins. I run 65 psi cold, use Pressure Pro, and had one failure in that time due to a nail in a sidewall - no on road failures (knock on wood!).

Garmin eTrex 20 - Tips for New User?

Just got a Garmin eTrex 20 hand held GPS, primarily for hiking. Never had a GPS of any kind before and I am a bit puzzled about how to do some things on this unit, such as downloading maps and using basic functions. The manual does not match up very well with what is actually seen on the screen so any tips would be appreciated.
