RE: Andersen Ultimate Connection Gooseneck Adapter

The video looks good with lots of wiggle room for the pin box to pivot. The only problem I see is me trying to line up my truck to get that ball exactly under the socket. My 5er just needs for me to get it close L-R and back into the pin box so the 5th wheel tilts a bit, then hit-the-pin. I'll be interested in your experience if you go for it as I like the system.

My digging around online disclosed two things so far: 1) my 98 Frontier was made by Peak Mfg in North Battleford, Saskatchewan which went out of business in the 90s, laying off numerous welders, from which I speculate that they made their frames in-house, and 2) the unit was at first a rental trailer run by Canadream for some years, from which I speculate that it may have been better quality than average. I scanned closely for any sign of frame manufacture to no avail. I bought it from the second owner with a few small problems but I easily restored it and the trailer has bounced along behind me many thousands of miles with no serious issues. I remain alert for any sign of history of my trailer but am at this point quite prepared to run it a good long time. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with more accurate history of Frontier trailers or anything else from Peak Mfg.

It's been called a kingpin for longer than you or I have been on this earth. Have you arbitrarily decided to change it? FWIW, the DOT refers to it as a kingpin.

Well OK if that's what you and DOT want to call it. I strive for clear and lowest-common-denominator terms and will refer to it as "the pin". FWIW if you mention that you "hit the kingpin" the dispatcher will look for a damage report and your fellow truckers will laugh you out of the donut shop.

I do hope we're finished calling this a "kingpin". Your TV may have kingpins, but what we grab onto with our 5th wheels is just "the pin" or maybe "hitchpin". My 5er came with a white disk on the pin and it worked fine so I left it on. I don't lube my pin separately but do attach a plastic cage (a beer cozy was suggested too) to reduce the frequency and consequences of bumping my head on it.

For the wiring to the 7 conductor cord there are brand-specific wiring kits that "tee" into your existing wiring harness to supply the connections. I envy those who can use them but I had to do mine the old hard way with test light, wires and fuses. It took a lot of time but my home-made deck hid a nightmare of temporary circuits and scotch connectors that needed steadying up with solder and shrink tubing. My trailer and cab clearance lights draw quite a lot of current so I supported it with a relay and separate switch. Also my "hot" wire is fused directly to my (+) terminal via the safety isolator, so my trailer 12V systems run on three batteries most of the time.

I carry some Pex connectors so if I nick a water line (again) I can just cut it and repair it (again). Sure beats soldering copper.

Some years ago in one of the trade mags there was a medium duty truck, former dump truck or something. He mounted his 5th wheel near the back of the frame and carried a Smart Car cross-ways between the 5th wheel and cab. He used ramps to drive it on and off. Not directly applicable to normal light trucks and golf carts, but if you ever see a medium truck for sale ..... (?)

I'm also with Fred in that other people wrenching on my vehicles gives me the creeps. Among the many good suggestions, I second the notion of keeping the TV attached during trailer jacking. And while I'm at it I check the wheel bearings for free play and wire brush the wheels prior to balancing (tire busters need a gun to their head before they'll clean wheels properly). And while the wheels are off I pull the drums and look over the brake shoes and springs (and wiring in the case of trailers). Then of course the proper torque on the wheel fasteners is sure only if I do it.

My 5th wheel has a steel bar that goes across behind the pin when it's locked. I cleaned the bar down to bright steel and primered it, then painted it chrome. Now all I need do is squint in from the trailer side, and if I see the chrome bar I know it's locked and can proceed to the tug test.
