RE: WHY is there a STEP behind drive/ pass seats ?

P.S. A small (24 foot or less) Class C on the E450 chassis (plus ... no slide as is our case) provides what I call "chasis overkill" that, IMHO, is priceless for increased reliability, safety, longevity, towing capacity, and usage flexibility:
This is the way we went, also - our 28' C has #2500 lbs of CCC; climbs steep roads like a mountain goat; pulls Hubby's drag race truck like it weighs mere ounces - and has ample storage room to bring anything and everything we could ever want on vacation. I'll be taking ours north in a few weeks, on a kayaking trip with some of my girlfriends. The storage compartments will easily swallow the lifejackets/paddles/sprayskirts/drybags/deckbags and other kayak essentials for several of us!

RE: Pepsi and Horse show

Plea deal for the guy in the film.
A judge has to accept the deal, but this guy is getting probation...
Of course he is - makes me want to throw up. He's been soring horses since 1979, the story says.
Here's the problem (and it happens with all breeds): The Show Judges are also trainers/competitors - and they all know each other. Let's say I want to have a show in Virginia: I'll hire Judge A from California - he's a well-known trainer, but because of the distance, he won't bring any of his horses/students to my show. Trainer B is an east-coast guy, so will be there showing scads of horses. Trainer B is also asked to judge many west-coast shows. Judge A will probably *overlook* a few details on Trainer B's horses... because he knows that in 3 weeks, the roles will be reversed.
Until a breed group has the , um, cojones to FIRE a judge who ignores a sored horse or ten - the problem will simply continue. Until owners pull their horses from training stables for abuse (he!! yes they know their horses are being abused) - the problem will simply continue. Everybody's lips are moving - but nobody's doing anything significant at the top level.

That was powerful - I had to grab a Kleenex by the time they got to the GSDs..... sort of mirrors my comments about horse-show judges: they HAVE to stop placing the freaks.

RE: Why I love my RV:

I lucked out for an upcoming paddle trip: I found a campground with a group site, for all my tent-dwelling friends - and I'll be camped right next to them - with full hookups :-)
If they're nice, I'll let them warm their coffee in my microwave ;-)

RE: Please wash your hands

For some folks this "They must wear gloves!" is an obsession that I simply do not understand. I often wonder if they ever changed a diaper on their child or grandchild bare handed or did they break out the surgical gloves?
THANK YOU!!! I maintain that no part of dumping the tanks on my RV could be messier than a toddler who's had a stupendous "Blowout". In either case - I simply wash my hands afterward.

RE: Pepsi and Horse show

Unfortunately every aspect of showing horses has some history of owners who do drastic things to get results.
Maybe I'm wrong, but Dressage seems pretty abuse-free: the key is that the horse is judged on his "willingness" and "balance". Those two things can't be forced - they need to be coaxed and rewarded.

RE: Why I love my RV:

My terrible teen relentlessly argued that we were "overdoing" it by calling a luxury camper "camping". He insisted that he'll experience real camping by sleeping under the stars. Well, in a screen tent in a lawnchair, close enough. That came to an abrupt end when two raccoons happened upon whatever bag of chips my son brought into the tent with him and who were both hell-bent on having a midnight snack. We awoke to the hollering of our daughter...no, wait...son. Sounded like a girl.
ROFL!!!!!! My dear friend Carla just desperately wants to be a "woman of the wilderness" and brought her backpacking ultralight HAMMOCK to sleep in. She's bear-phobic to start with - I was waiting for some raccoon to wander into camp, and wonder what was in the hammock, so might reach up and touch Carla's backside??? Surely she would become airborne at that point....LOL!!! But the entertainment factor was ruined by her chickening out both nights, and sleeping in her car....

RE: squealing in wheels

Our brakes "hang up" for a bit at low speeds, and emit a steady whine. Have also had the hubcaps "chirp"; but once we went to wheel liners (innies vs: outies) - no more chirping. AND we had a drive shaft carrier bearing go out - that was a yowl that was enough to wake the dead - was almost impossible to determine where it was coming from when inside the MH, but when I pedaled my bike alongside as Hubby drove the MH slowly down the street, I could pinpoint that the sound was coming from the midpoint underside.

Why I love my RV:

Last weekend, I went camping with a bunch of kayaking friends. In order to spend time with them, because they had rented a "group space" (hike in; no hookups) at a Nat'l Park, I slept in a tent :-(
Why I love my RV:
Probably would NOT have heard Reveille played at 6 AM every day by the Boy Scouts camped next to us; nor heard their "Wolf Howl" practice at midnight
I can't hear the person camped next to me snoring....
The potty is only 10 steps from my bed and I don't have to get fully dressed to visit it.
My bed does NOT have to be inflated
My food can remain with me - not locked in my car due to bear restrictions
The shower is free
My "Ambient sleeping temperature" is controlled by either a furnace or A/C - NOT by how many layers of clothing I can wear to bed
I don't have to shake the spiders out of my shoes before I put them on
I can stand up to put my pants on (my tent is a backpacking, 51" tall model)
I could go on and on, but you get the point. Camping in an RV is decadently wonderful!!!!

RE: kayaks vs canoes

Thanks for the heads-up on BWCA, George. If I decide to enter that area I'll be sure to leave the mirage drive in the TT. Fortunately the Hobie still should paddle very well, too.
A few strips of waterproof Gorilla Tape (like heavy black duct tape) over the drive slot and scuppers will make the boat "smoother" through the water for long paddles!

RE: Pepsi and Horse show

I worked for a while for a friend who raised Arabians - I just exercised the "kids" (the 2 to 3 yr old horses who weren't broke to ride) - to keep them in showring condition; worked on their ground manners, etc. My favorite was a mahogany bay stallion I'll call "N" - he was wonderfully gentle and sweet (for a 3-yr-old stallion) and drop-dead beautiful. N was sent out to a well-known trainer, who was going to break him to saddle and start campaigning him on the National Circuit.
Four weeks later, N came back home - BLIND. It seemed the trainer had put him in a "bitting rig" (a harness-like thing that forces a horse to tuck its head) and N, who had never experienced anything scary in his life, freaked out, flipped backwards, and hit his head, losing his sight. I worked with him for a few months, teaching him to negotiate life as a blind horse - then he was sent to another farm to be used at stud. But without a Champion or Legion of Merit tagged on his name, I doubt he earned all the much for stud fees - and I lost track of him.... the whole thing made me sick and I got out of showing horses entirely.
Now N never showed any signs of being *abused* (as in being hit) - his love and trust of people never changed. But just the "normal" routine of being trained for the National Showring caused his blindness.

RE: Proposed USDA rule change internet puppy sales

I find a consistent way to tell the difference between those breeding for money and those breeding to improve the breed is whether or not the breeder is keeping a pup for themselves.
If the breeder is in it to improve the breed, then you would expect them to have enough confidence in their own breeding choices to keep what they designed to be an improvement on the dogs they already have.
I understand what you're saying - but let's assume I own a huge breeding facility and am cranking out puppies like popcorn. I too will keep a pup or two around since I am surely wearing out my breeding stock by breeding EVERY single heat cycle.....

RE: Pepsi and Horse show

Pepsi can not have been that naive. Any one who has ever been around or exposed to the "Walking horse" culture knows of the abuse. It's my opinion that they dropped the sponsorship only after the heat was brought on.
I absolutely agree. In the news report - they make it sound like the one guy is "bad" - when in truth - anyone who knows horses can look at those shots taken of an entire show ring full of horses and know every single horse there has been tormented in some manner. NO horse carries its tail straight in the air; and that artificial gait make me want to commit murder. As they said - of 52 random horses tested - 52 showed evidence of "soring".
I showed horses in the early 70's - and everyone THEN was talking about how abused the poor Walking Horses were and "somebody ought to do something". But I can guarantee - as long as the judges keep placing these monstrosities - people will keep abusing the horses.
There IS a group of people who are raising "natural" Tennessee Walking horses - God Bless 'em. But THOSE horses can't compete at the top level due to the judges' preference for the "Big Lick". And the only way to get the Big Lick is to hurt that horse beyond words.....
To CincyGus - YOU are my hero. It is SO beautiful to see a horse moving naturally, balanced and happy. Leroy looks like a great guy - give him an extra hug from me :-)
I also want to add that it's not just a problem with Tennessee Walking Horses - there's all sorts of painful stuff happening to show horses of every breed when they get towards the top levels of showing :-( Even if it's nothing more than a quick dab of Ben Gay on the delicate underside of the tail, to get that higher tail carriage.....

RE: Easy-to-digest calories??

Thanks! There IS a drawback to all this alertness - he sees me packing for a 2-day kayak/tent camping trip and thinks he's coming along :-( He's gonna be WAY peeved when he finds out he's not coming. I'm giving Ed a roll of liverwurst to bribe him into eating, which he usually stops doing when his "mommy" is gone....
Sheeeesh - Aussies are so obsessive about their "people"....LOL!!

RE: Proposed USDA rule change internet puppy sales

If I am reading the changes correctly anyone who grosses >$500 from the sale of dogs would need a license, meaning every breeder will likely require a license.
I suspect a lot of people under-report their income from the sale of dogs ;-) but when breeders have a big fancy website with 20 or more dogs for sale, it's pretty hard to deny how much they earn from the sale of dogs. To me, however, $500 seems way too low - should be more like $3,000 to 5,000. The person breeding one litter a year should NOT be penalized; 6 puppies at $500 each is 3 grand right there.

RE: Easy-to-digest calories??

Update: I haven't taken Ike to the vet to use her scale yet, but the old boy FEELS like he's packing on a couple of pounds!!! I'm sure it's the Pancreazyme helping him use the calories in the dog food (450 cals per cup!) but maybe the oatmeal helps, too. And he's acting, well.... like an Aussie. I'm seeing more of those "bursts of craziness" typical of the breed..... only at his age (13), they don't last too long and they're followed by a nice long nap....LOL!!

RE: How to break the ice with our CG neighbors?

I wanted a memento of our trip to Alaska - and found a website where you can imprint license plates with whatever you want. I chose an Alaska plate, had it imprinted with the miles we traveled, and mounted it on the front (in Michigan, you only need a rear license plate).
THAT sure gets people to stop and talk - thinking we drove down from Alaska....LOL!!
