RE: costs to snowbird

We've been snowbirding for 7 years, three in motorhome then bought a mobile home. This winter, due to health issues, were not able to head south. We are finding cost of heating and other utilities on our house in Canada to be at least as much as the cost of spending winter in Texas. I realize I do not have the cost of fuel that others would have with RV but we do have 12 month rent and utilities on house in S. Texas. Long story short, we'll be heading south as long as health permits. No ecconomics to staying home.

RE: Medical insurance in Canada for Americans

A Canadian with health problems in USA will be asked for Visa card then treated; an American in Canada will have treatment started then asked for Visa card.

RE: Would like to thank the federalizes

Very similar experience a few years ago between Veracruz and Villihermosa. Flat on driver's side rear on MH and almost no shoulder. Officer parked cruiser about half on highway a couple of hundred feet behind me to make sure vehicles had to stay in left lane while I changed tire. Gave him a cold Coke and some books and crayons for his children. He was pleased and we were very impressed. Lots of 'Good News Stories"

RE: Music/musician jokes...

Was shopping in a grocery store in Nashville. Saw a lady carrying a guitar. Asked why and she said if she left it in her car, it would be stolen so I dug DW's banjo out of the RV and put it in front seat of toad. Came back an hour later and there were TWO banjos on seat!!!!

RE: Tax on Mexican liquor

Buying booze in Mexico may not make total ecconomic sense but it is still fun. The tequila we buy is about $7.00 in Mexico, $14 in Texas and $35 in Ontario. We don't drink much else so even with the new taxes, still cheaper. Add to it the experience, good lunch, day's outing and it is still a great day. We may be delayed in getting back to the Valley this year due to some medical problems DW's mom is having but will make it once everything is stabalized. Getting anxious! Haven't seen snow in 6 years and really don't want to start again but ... you do what you have to.....

RE: dentists in Progresso

We have used Dr. Jorge Mustre as well. Very impressed. Large, bright treatment area, good equipment etc. Icing on cake was they charged $5 less for cleaning than other dentists we have used. They don't take appointments for cleanings but if you get there before 9 or so, you should not have any problem. They do take appointments for any work needed after cleaning. Make sure you don't waste the $5; invest it in a cool margaretta or two!!!
Enjoy....

RE: 5Th Wheel storage on route to Texas

When we used to leave after Christmas, we would take our 35' motor home to Fort Wayne, IN in Fall. I just called a KOA and used their storage area. Can't remeber what they charged but it must have been reasonable as I am frugal (doesn't that sound so much better than cheap????) Just use the KOA website to find a park on your route and give them a call. Make sure you winterize as, even in north Texas you can get cold enough to freeze things up. Last winter we had two days of freezing rain and sub freezing weather in the Rio Grande Valley.
Good luck

RE: Canadian Snowbirds and the Close Connection Form

Hi All
I looked at close connection form a few years back and didn't fill in as we spend 5 months a year in Texas so are over formula - last year + 1/3 year before + 1/6 year before that - 150+50+25. We earn no income in US - won't even allow our US bank to pay any interest on account. Realize we are taking a risk but figured filling in form with an overage on days allowed would be a for sure red flag. Anyone fill in form with more than 182 days reported??
We'll see....

RE: Do we dare

Not sure how you heat but look into digital thermostat that goes to 40 or so. We set ours to 5 C (Canadians) and have no problems. I do drain & blow water system and throw RV antifreeze in all traps just in case.
