RE: Limp Mode on LMM Duramax

If it went into limp mode, said it slipped, it did. Allison's are good tranny's, but when you chip the truck for more HP, you need to beef up the Allison or you will end up replacing it. A new Allison will run you $7-8K installed, so I would upgrade it if it is not to late.

RE: Slow market or what?

The market is slow, and bad for selling. Mine has been up for 3 weeks, a few lookers, but most offers were not even close to wholesale or trade-in value. I had a Dealer that was nice enough to look up and give me the wholesale and trade-in value, so I know what it is, and he told me most folks that want to buy can't get financing as credit for TT's and 5'ers is tight. The closest 2 with the same options are priced $6K more than mine is, and that is before negotiating, and I am flexible. I am not in a position where I have to sell it tomorrow, but am moving to a DP, so when it sells, it sells, and I can start my search for the DP that fits my needs.

I have used both, and didn't have problems with either. I am currently using Air Lift with no issues in 5 years.

RE: 03 Tahoe Dash Lights

IIRC the bulbs are soldered in if it is a GM cluster. If it is, you will need to unsolder the old ones and get new ones. I had an 03 Silverado that burned out a few, replaced them with these CLICKY.

RE: Tank sensors?

Depends on how it was manufactured. I was in a campground a few weeks ago and saw a guy open the basement door and create a waterfall. Apparently some grey tanks have vents in the basement and are not vented through to the roof. I didn't know you could do this, but according to a couple RV repair Tech's I talked to they said they see it all the time, is ok since it is grey and not black, and the vent is lower than the shower drain, so it may not come up through the shower.

RE: Detector alarm?

Could be the battery going dead, and the propane detectors usually need to be replaced every 5-6 years.

RE: Financing First RV

There are so many variables, your credit history, FICO score play a big part, as well as your finances (What comes and goes every month). You will also find that some will only finance rigs 5 years and newer, some 10 years and newer, and some that won't finance full timers since you will be living in it. You will also find some have a minimum amount they will finance no matter what the rigs age is.
Good luck on your journey.

RE: Help with narrowing brands down - Modern Interiors

After looking around for months, I decided on the floorplan, then contacted the manufacturers and had them send me their interior samples. I ended up ordering mine with the interior that fit me, not what the Dealer thought I might want. I am very happy with the colors, and that it doesn't look like my Grandmother's living room. I would check with the manufacturer and see what options they offer for interiors.

RE: Fantastic Fan

I installed the 6000 in our bedroom. I wanted something with a rain sensor so I would not wake up wet in the middle of the night. During the summer when it cools down in the evening we usually open a few windows in the main living area and the Fantastik Fan pulls the hot air trapped in the top of the rig out, and pulls the air in from the outside. We have also run ours at night while sleeping, it does make some noise, but not so much you can't get to sleep. My only regret is I didn't do it when I bought the rig, took me 3 years before I installed it, and wished I had done it day 1.

RE: buying a fifth wheel should be like buying a car

My rig is up for sale, we always cleaned it after every trip, spent 2 days washing, waxing, wiping, checking the roof, and going through everything on it to make sure it looked better than new, and the new owner's will be just as proud of it as we are. I always worry it won't be clean enough. We also have been shopping, and it seems like most dealers don't care, which costs them the sale, I figure if they don't care to take care of it, what do they not want me to see. I see batteries with more corrosion on them than the Titanic, dust so thick on the counters you need a bulldozer to clean the top layer off, carpet so dirty it looked it came from my garage and was used to work on cars with. I understand the market is soft and a rig may set for months without anyone looking at it, but every rig should be cleaned when it hits the lot, and at least have someone go through once a week and wash the outside, and clean the inside. Nothing worse than looking at a rig and calculating in your mind how long it will take to clean it up so you can enjoy it.

RE: Pressure Washing

I won't use a pressure washer, want to the keep the graphics where they are. I use Protect All Quick and Easy Wash, we have hard water and it does not leave any hard water spots that I can see.

RE: Duramax Turbo leaking oil

Some seepage is normal, mine does it, as does about every Duramax out there that has not had the PVC reroute. I would not replace the intercooler pipes, seen Duramax's with 700K on the clock that were stock, and never cleaned. If you are worried about the silicon hoses slipping off the intercooler pipes, remove the silicon hoses, clean the oil residue off were they are clamped on the pipe, as the pipe. I used alcohol, then when assembling spray the pipe with some Aqua Net Super Extra Hold Hairspray. Make sure you don't let the hairspray dry before you slip the silicon hose back on, slip it on wet. I have yet to see a truck slip a hose off after doing this. I think GM has some kind of black sealant they use at the garage, not sure what it is. GM will use it on the one that normally comes loose, which is the one on the driver's side of the turbo, near the master brake cylinder.

RE: Most Car Transporters Are Cummins Powered Rams?

I've noticed over the years traveling across the country that many or most of the 1 tons pulling car transport trailer seemed to be Dodges.
Are they cheaper to buy or is there another reason transporters used the Dodge Cummins setup?
I think it is who will give them the best deal. I have seen Dodges, Fords, and GM's. When I was on the I10 a few weeks ago going east seemed most I saw were Fords, when I was fueling I noticed Dodges, and on the way back west, saw a lot of Cheys. There is probably a good mixture of them, just depends on where they happen to be as to which ones you will see.

RE: Down Payment on New Motor Home

You are planning on RV'ing for 10 years, but sometimes life throws curve balls, and you also have to look at what if I needed to sell it in 2, 3, 5, or earlier than 10 years.
I can't say what folks should do with their finances, to many variables, and I won't knock anyone who finances, or pays in cash, to each their own.

RE: Allison tranny/eng oil cooler upgrade

I have yet to see an Allison overheat unless it is either to full/low on fluid, has old fluid and/or dirty internal screen, or the tranny cooler is full of bug gunk or road debris.

RE: Duramax dealer service cost

Tranny: $179
Doubt that's with a TES-295 certified fluid, but to each their own...
I asked about that since I thought it was a bit low. I was told they buy it by the 250 gallon tank. He said if I wanted it from the 5 gallon jugs it would be $250. He took me back to the diesel service area, and there was a 250 gallon tank that has the Allison Approved label on them, as well as the Transynd label. They service a lot of diesels in there, mostly MDT's and pickups. Everytime I have been in there there are more diesels in there than gassers, and the diesel servicing area is probably 10 stalls, the gassers have 6 stalls. I will take it from the 250 gallon tank for the cost savings. Not sure why anyone would take it from the 5 gallon and pay more.

RE: Duramax dealer service cost

If I take mine in to local dealer it is almost 30% more than the dealer 20 miles away. Here is what they charge:
Tranny: $179
Tranny Filter: $30
Rear Diff: $150
Transfer Case: $150
Front Diff: $150
Fuel Filter: $109
Coolant Change: $160
Look online, you can get the filters and lubricants for much cheaper, do it yourself, and save a bunch of $$$.
