RE: Bias Tires Issues

The old nylon bias tires always did that, they dont get better they will always be flat untill run a few miles. Yep. The only cure is to go to radials. My parents' old 72 Chinook did that like crazy until they put radials on it. Interestingly enough this is common on airliners too. First taxi out of the day on cold flat spotted tires and thump, thump, thump until the tires warmed up. Radial tires cured that too.

RE: Water Hose

Often regular garden hoses contain high consentrations of led and are not designed to be used for drinking water. This is a fact. It's your call. Is Jimmy Page or Robert Plant in the hose?

RE: Water Hose

Garden hose. No problems with taste. Run it for long enough to get anything in it out first. I'd be surprised that fast flowing water through a hose can pick up any taste. X2 Run it long enough to flush it out. The white hose is good for water that is sitting in it not flowing...like when you are parked at the site with the hose cooking in the sun. I wouldn't want to use a garden hose for that.

Just a note on depreciation. How much is a Hawaii vacation worth after it is over?

RE: Used Class C--maybe

Hi Dakzuki, I'm glad to hear that at least one class C (assuming you have one) does make use of the space. My class C has a partial wall behind the drivers seat, so that space is pretty much a dead loss. The passenger's seat could be replaced with one that might twirl around -- but the floor is about three inches lower in the cab than in the rest of the RV. So my cab is only good for temporary storage while stopped. It is a great pity. I often wonder if the designers have ever gone for a week long trip in what they produce. (I'm betting they don't.) Hi Coolmon42, Don't forget you loose the space in the cab as far as living space is concerned. Says who? I have rotating cab seats which becomes two nice recliners with floor space between them. My Navion (Sprinter based) does for both front seats. There are some Ford based RVs that do too. I haven't seen any Chevy ones but that doesn't means they don't exist. It all depends on the design of the RV. One needs to design it with rotating cab seats in mind for it to work.

RE: just bought a 1982 coachmen mini rv. I need help!

As has been said, if you do not have the skills/time/inclination to do most of the work yourself you'd best unload it to somebody that does (or wants it for parts) as it will likely turn into an expensive endeavor. I have done it before (on a truck camper) and it consumed a significant amount of time. I enjoyed the project but if I counted my hours as paid (and I know what I'm doing) it would have been spendy.

RE: Portable Ovens

If you're looking for something light weight and for occasional use ... check out what the backpackers do. They use an aluminum folding oven that fits over the burners of your stove. We use it in our truck camper for roasting, baking ... and it works absolutely perfectly. And it is very LIGHT ... folds up to take very little space. Check out the Coleman portable camp oven, here. Its from $39-$48 at Cabelas and Walmart (when they have 'em). We got ours at a Cabelas sale for very few bucks! Also, Bemco backpackers oven, here. It has a few more features and sizes ... but their website explains it all. I keep one of those Colemans in the RV as an adjunct to the built in oven. Great for warming stuff. Coleman made one called the Instastart or something like that. I had one but when testing it out it distorted from the heat and the door wouldn't work right after that. I took it back....junk. The folding one works great on the Coleman Powerpack single burner.

RE: Ford vs Chevy

Be sure you sit in the cab of each before deciding. Generally, a GM or Ford dealer will have full-body vans on their lot, which are similar enough in the cab area to the cutaways to give you a good idea of comfort. Jim, "Mo' coffee!" Like Jim said. Sit in them both. Make sure your copilot does too to see if they can handle the passenger side.

RE: Anybody use these awning rope light hooks?

I made my own little loops. Get about a 6 inch log length of cord that is a bit smaller than the slot. Tie a knot in each end and slide both knotted ends into the slot. Repeat this as many times as you see fit. You now have loops you can hang anything on with hooks, little carabiners, or whatever fastening device you come up with. The cord loops can be rolled up in the awning just fine. We made some "hippie curtains" from some big funky print tapestries to hang from ours that go almost all the way to the ground. They look really cool and pack up small as they are just cotton. Makes it look like we should be doing tarot card readings in there. Here is where we got the tapestries. We put grommets in them to hang them from the loops with carabiners. Grommets at the bottom and we can tie them to stakes or whatever.

RE: squealing in wheels

Is it a squeal or more of a creak. At low speeds hubcaps can make some pretty astounding noises.

RE: Personal Question $$$

MSRP was 108K (2011 model year). Paid just under 80 + tax license, etc. in March 2011 for new ordered RV. Owe about 40. I could have paid cash but like to keep an emergency cash reserve (to last a year without work) so I didn't want to go below that. I'll have it paid off in a few years. On the credit card thing I also use the credit card for everything. I get a net profit for using my card (dividend points at REI) so I am essentially cashless. I even put an earnest money deposit on my RV with the credit card :)

RE: Helpful vendors or scam artists?

I can't remember if it was in Beaver or Scipio, but the same scam situation happened to me in 2010 while on our way to SLC. Guy came out in a golf cart, thought he was a service station employee and didn't pay any attention to him. While pumping fuel, he walked around the front of the mh and said Hi...did you know you have a bad right front tire? Of course I asked him to show me and he pointed to a dark spot on the tread and told me that the tread was separating from the steel belts and that he owned a tire shop across the street and would be happy to install a new tire for me. Looked closer and noticed that the dark spot was just a smudge where he had rubbed his thumb across. I got up close to him and asked him if he thought his mother was proud of him and that he ought to be ashamed of himself trying to take advantage of senior folk. He got back on his cart and left. I immediately went inside the station and reported the incident. I'm still driving on that same tire 15,000 miles later. Obviously, these nogoodfornothings do make a living from this... Just ask LTalbot. Ron Invite the guy to say the same thing and point out the "problem" while you record him on video. I bet he gets a case of laryngitis.

RE: Helpful vendors or scam artists?

There was a story on 60 minutes years ago about guys that would scam RVers...they'd say they saw smoke coming from underneath and direct the victim to a "friend that had a shop" who would drain the diff into a pan and add metal shavings. They would then say they could get another diff lickety split, you say yes, and they then remove your diff go on a road trip with it, come back and sell it back to you plus installation. 60 Minutes put a camera under an RV and got it all on tape as the guy did the deed.

RE: Went to look at a bigfoot

If he was a really good salesman, he would drive it to your house for you to look at. On his day off. A desperate one would. A real one puts it where the market is. I do think it's uncool that the salesmen didn't give a courtesy call letting the OP know it was going to be gone BUT having been at the other end of the deal in customer service I can envision how many times he's been stood up by flakes.

RE: Poor quality construction

Supply and demand. One of these day someone is going to import a high quality RV and take over the market ... just like Toyota and Honda. The US mfg better wakeup now before they end up like GM. I will always purchase US made if possible but when it comes down to US junk or foriegn quality, I will go with quality. People keep saying this, and I don't understand why they don't realize that RV manufacturing does not lend itself to the mass-production methods necessary to attract the foreign manufacturers. Otherwise they would've done it already. IOW it's obvious to me that there's not enough profit in it for them to bother. I certainly wouldn't do it. Heck, the demand for big motorhomes is not going to go up. Very true. The low production rates of RVs relative to most automobiles does not lend themselves to the production techniques of most automobiles. Automobiles that are built at the production rates of RVs (and few exhibit quality comparable Honda and Toyota) are expensive relative to mass produced ones.

RE: Driving Question

As a couple of people have stated, the mirrors MUST be properly adjusted. You should not be looking at the side of the RV with the flat mirror...it needs to look out more. The convex mirror is the one that is adjusted to see close to the RV. When I bought my previous RV the previous owner had the mirrors adjusted to look down the side of the rig and it was downright dangerous on the freeway. Also if you take stock of who is around you (situational awareness) in the RV you will be able to react more quickly or in advance of a hairy situation. For instance in the case of traffic merging from an on ramp. I hopefully am looking far enough ahead to see them coming and will move over to prevent a mess. If a single car is merging I will leave it up to them to adjust their speed up or down to safely merge. I am 11000 lbs of turbo diesel and I am not lifting unless I really have to. I have surprised a few inattentive dummies that are not paying attention while they're merging but it's a good lesson for them. People too frequently have their car mirrors adjusted wrong so they are looking down the side of their car too.

RE: Something crawled into the engine compartment and died!!!

looks like a vacuum line of some kind.... Agreed. There are a few things that run off vacuum (like heater diverter doors) so you may not notice until you need it. Should be an easy fix.

RE: Class C Floor Plans

I've not seen an E-W free-standing queen without something in a slide even in A's in the 34-38 foot range. I have. Bigfoot 29G. Link. That's a short queen, cutting half a foot off the bed does make it work. For you possibly. For others (like my brother and sister in law) it's just fine.
