RE: flipping axle's

No Offense intended but this story is starting to sound like a movie where a couple bought an old house that needed much repair . I think it was called "Money Pit" . JMHO but at the age you are ,unless you are very wealthy I would step back and rethink some of your priorities. Either this is a trolling post , or I've lost touch with the way it is with money now a days. One lesson I was taught years ago was to save ,and buy something new or next to new ( in great shape) instead of buying "old , broken down" things for a cheap price. There is no profit in these RV anyways , and to start off having to do so much to a used rig, just makes no economical sense to me.I value your thought about trying to get what you can afford at this time , but man , to buy something that needs so much work , I just can't see it . Again ,JMHO. Life is Good.

RE: flipping axle's

hey guys, yes they put a section of 2" x 6" tubing in. About the only way you could "properly" is utilizing the full 6" depth. Id imagine the tubing they used was 2" x 6" x 4' to 6' long. Have yet to see the completed job.May I so boldly ask what they charged to flip the axels alone? Life is Good.

RE: flipping axle's

Sounds like your quite handy and may be able to do this yourself . We had a 21 footer that we had the axels fliped to fit our F250 . It was done at an RV shop and it cost quite a bit , around 4 bills . Sounds like a lot , but I knew they knew what they were doing and felt they did a good and safe job. When your double pulling , you want everything working in your favor . There are many wiser fiver guys here than me , but I also think the wheels need to be aligned to run true. I left it to the specialist. Good Luck . Life is Good

RE: Thermal Pane Windows

I have them and love them for three reasons: they don't fog-up or sweat as much, they keep the cold out, they keep the heat out. I suspect most that hate them, are not owners of the more current versions. Some of the older versions where, well, not quite so good. Jim also makes some good points about insulation, the rig has to be well insulated and well sealed (ie no air leaks)BINGO!!!!!!

RE: Camping Too Much Trouble?.......How Sad

Our group of paddler/hikers will be going to Florida in March for an annual outing. We are staying at a SP that has a campground and cabins. One of the couples in our group has a 32' Fifth-wheel, but have decided not to go since the cabins are all booked. They say camping is "just too much trouble". During the discussion, two other couples joined in saying they had RV's in the past but agreed that getting them packed and ready, towing them to a destination, etc. "wasn't worth it". What isit with these people? They are active adults, not couch potatoes. Why did they buy an RV in the first place? This Rant has been brought to you courtesy of lizzie. Some people live experiences and enjoy the heck out of them for a period of time . Myself, and like a lot of others , after years of doing some activitiy like hunting , fishing , tent camping , RVing or whatever ,find that our opinions change over time and as we "age" . Sometimes the reward is no longer worth the effort. Sometimes the activity no longer takes a priority in our lives as it once did .Sometimes doing less of an activitiy but at a better quality may make more sense. Buying an RV and feeling obligated to use it, either by yourself or others ,is not what that life style is all about . If your friends no longer want to go , there may not be anything wrong with them at all . They've been there done that and now wish not to anymore .Life is Good

RE: Confession of a new Smartphone user

the G in iphone means generation/version NOT 4g LTE data the iphone is still 3g data technology the iphone is a good smart phone it works well many people have one ( i do not ) I can recommned the Thunderbolt or LG revolution, in the current line up or perhaps the samsung charge, all of these are android smart phones on VZw you have two smart phones and a Mifi what are the data plans and how much data do you use on the mifi with the pc's etc if you happen to have the $29.99 unlimted web & email smart phone data plan I recommend you keep it, drop the mifi and tether the PC to the smart phone ( but only if you have the $29.99 unlimited planWe both have Samsung Intensity 11 phones .We are on a 550 minute National Loyalty Plan and have a 75MB data plan on each for phone ($10 each phone) . We also carry the MIFI , but Verizon has let us,when not using the MIFI ,turn it off and activate an older 3rd phone during this time . By doing this we are charged only $10 a month for the 3rd phone and not the $59 for the MIFI . Because we live in the country our MIFI will not serve as our home hook up for our computer . We also use a network extender for our cells here at home which works quite well . My idea is to drop the $10 charge on both phones and buy the DW a smart or Iphone along with the data package for $29 more . I do not need evrything on my phone . For internet useage we both can share the wifes new phone. (smart or Iphone?????) By droping my 75 MB ( which is so slow ) and buying the package on the DW's new phone it will cost us $10 more per month than we are paying now . Are we getting anywhere or have I lost you?Our data plan on the MiFi I believe is 5GB ( I think) which we have never went over . Life is Good.

RE: To Park or Not Park

Given the price of diesel fuel I am thinking of parking my 08 cummins and buying a small pick up (S10/ranger) for everyday driving. My question is would it be a bad idea to keep the diesel parked and only used when towing or should I keep driving it? Please give me pros and cons of parking the big rig until ready to tow. ThanksI would suggest a smaller car instead of a smaller PU . That is unless you have your heart set on a small PU . The idea here is to get the most bang for your buck in the mileage dept. . You can always use your truck now and then if needed which would also be good for it. Life is Good.

RE: Confession of a new Smartphone user

This may be the closest post to answering a question I have . We are thinking about getting a smart phone or a iphone ( I believe the iphone would be 4g as the smart would be 3g) . We are not real techy , but are staying with the new way of communications .We now have 2 data package phones and also carry a MIFI all through Verizon. Is there a standard answer to the question of what phone would be better for us? I am sure it depends what one is using the phone for , but are they similiar for the user? Is one better for using as a hot spot for 2 lap tops? Could someone offer up some advice and Verizon phone recomendations? I am open to questions on what we would be using the phone for . Not trying to high jack this post and will post my own if the mod. feels I should . Thanks . Life is Good.

RE: To Park or Not Park

This is an interesting topic . I for years struggled with it as I commuted quite a ways to work and I loved driving my truck , but found the cost of fuel on a weekly basis was breaking the budget . I started buying used high MPG cars for the commute and each week I thought about how nice it was to have a "weekly" savings ( 35 MPG over 15 MPG) , convience of parking , an extra car in case the truck broke down , and so on . I still wrestled with the idea of "am I really saving money?"To be honest , the one vehicle will always look better on paper . As the above poster stated "you have a 13 year old car , with high mileage......" Well , that car is still worth something more than a zero amount . A truck that you would be driving instead , would also be high mileage and think of all the maintences issues with it also , as someone mentioned . It is just a hard call , but for me ,having a commuter ,high MPG car as a daily user, far out weighs the positives of just driving a fuel guzzeling truck each day . Yes the upfront cost is more , yes , the double maintence adds up , but take it from one who has driven a lot of miles , I enjoyed the money in my pocket each week while driving the car. Life is Good

If you do not believe in big foot , come with me some dark night, when I go out behind our property ,in the pitch dark ,and walk through the 1200 acres of solid woods and swamps. The first crack of a branch off in the distance will make most a believer . :E

RE: Lest We Forget

"Please point out the "good" things in that part !" Fishing on the ice in a shanty ,watching the night sky develop at dusk, while standing on a frozen lake with no light pollution, walking through the woods looking for wildlife and their tracks , snowsking , snowmoblie riding , using four wheelers to traverse snow covered areas, warm wood fires and fire places, FRESH air, snowball fights with Grandkids, hot chocolate with Grandkids, looking out the window in 71 degree controlled comfort , being neighborly and helping someone who may have gotten stuck , sliding down hills with Grandkids , seeing whitetail deer much better in the woods , getting together with friends on a snowy day or any day, going out to eat (inside) , using snow blowers and plows to do what use to be done only by shovels, enjoying 2000 square feet of living space with 2 bathrooms on board, snuggeling in with the one you love on a cold , snowy blustery day. The most important thing that is good in this part ? Knowing that it will all change with the new season, bringing fresh life to everything and that we can enjoy a theater of seasons that puts on a pretty amazing show at times. Life is Good.

RE: Extreme cold warning MT, MN, ND, WI

It was -17 here this morning just before sunrise , which is always the coldest time of the day. There is a huge ice ridge across the lake which is spilling out steam from the warmer water below seaping to the surface. They have finally started driving vehicles out on the lake, that now has about 15 inches of ice . On a normal winter ( this winter has been unseasonable warm) we would have 24 inches of ice by this time. We only have about 2-3 inches of standing snow on the ground which is nice but has it's own set of problems for those of us with our own septic systems . It is possible that the severe cold can freeze the drain fields and inlet / outlet pipes on our septic tanks . I cover my every year with straw to help prevent this . The sun is shinning this morning and yes, it is a bone chilling cold if one were to be out for any length of time. We are tucked away in 71 degrees and sipping coffee while we build the energy to finish our painting job. So , after reading this , think to yourselves how much better you have it then back up home and let that thought be the tobbaco in your pipe today . Life is Good , and yes , as some say " Baby it's cold outside"

RE: Yet Another Black Hills, SD Question

If Devils Tower is on your agenda , I would make a one night stay in Spearfish do an early morning drive to the Tower and then take in the Passion Play if that would be of interest to you. Also , as someone mentioned the Spearfish Canyon road is another free attraction of its own and well worth the ride . As also mentioned , it is better done without the rig ( unless you have a truck camper). Life is Good.

RE: Extreme cold warning MT, MN, ND, WI

Is it cold up here? Yep , perfectly normal . A little cold weather is not something to fret about . As long as we have electric and our furance running . If I remember right ,Pawatt had a little cold snap last year and his park lost power for three days . It's a good time to catch up on the inside projects up here . Painted a room in the house today in perfectly 71 degrees windless temps. . It is like the old saying "Mind over matter, if you don't mind it doesn't matter". Life is Good.

RE: Yet Another Black Hills, SD Question

IMHO, There's a whole lot more for the kids to do at Bar Rafter J than there is to do at Custer. They have the buffalo roundup in September at Custer which is very interesting. Also, Rafter J is closer to all the other "stuff" there is to do in the area...1800s train ride, Bear Canyon, Mt. Rushmore etc....DennisTotally agree with this opinion. Life is Good.

RE: Yet Another Black Hills, SD Question

My family and I are planning a trip this year to the Black Hills. I have gone through this forum and researched all I could regarding the various posts and questions about the area (and there were a lot of them). One question that I didn't see asked is whether there are any campgrounds that have a better chance for seeing wildlife. My wife and kids mentioned they think it would be neat if some bison could be seen from the campground. I don't know if that happens a lot or not but I thought I'd post something and see what everyone says. Thanks in advance!Okay , I can't help but say this . Stay at one of the CG's around Spearfish or Sturgis during the big motorcyle rally , you'll see all the "wildlife " you would ever want . Kidding aside , we had a wonderful trip out there a few years ago in our fiver and did not experience much wildlife at any parks . I think the idea of the Black Hills are the Monuments and tourist attraction. Custer Park ,as stated above, does give the best display of Buffalo if you hit it at the right time . Good Luck and enjoy . It is a nice trip . Life is Good.

RE: Where did it go

Everyone wants to be a hero . Some ,take others answers and repete the same thought using different words . ( I may have just done that!) . I look at this forum for information with a grain of salt . You are so right how things can get so far away from the OP question.I think it has always been like that in a open discussion forum of any type. I try to state my honest opinion and relate my version ,to what the OPosters topic was .Like a lot of things in life , take what you can use , and leave the rest behind . Life is Good. When I have no clue about the topic of my question (like welding) I tend to look for the answers from multiple people that are the same. For example if six people say do X and one person says do Y, then I make the assumption that X may be the best way. Of course there is always the exception to the rule, but generally on here it works. That works for me also. Life is Good
